This is the tutorial I have been wanting all along! I really appreciate your scaffolded approach, presenting material in increasing difficulty rather than overwhelming a beginner with everything at once. You've given a lot to think about, but you've supplied the tools to perform the analyses. I can't wait to see your videos on herringbone and helical gears. Thank you!

Hello! If you don't mind, could you please explain the math you did at 6:35 You said that the Module times the number of teeth plus 2 is the outer diameter of the gear, can you explain more on that Please. Thanks a lot! Your videos are great!

There's going to be an obvious performance difference between how these two methods function in a real world environment. So I would say there is more to this then simply a case of varying methods. Any insight into which one is actually the proper method? Or for which purpose you would choose one over the other? I have to imagine a machinist would be after my head if I sent him the second!

I would use the first method for if I must model a gear or cut or hobbed out of a metal blank. You can make that chamfer in the real world quite easily on a lathe. The only hard thing is how to fix a gear in the lathe, you'd need a chuck with the right number of jaws or a mandrel. In my own case that would always be a purchased gear, I don't have the tools to cut my own gears. Most gears you can buy come with this type of chamfer already cut. The second method is nearly impossible to machine. Maybe with crazy fixturing on a CNC mill you can get it done, but I've never seen someone do that. It's quite trivial for 3D printing though. A machinist would indeed be pretty annoyed if you put that on a drawing. I don't think there's a big performance difference, it's just that the second chamfering method is nearly impossible to machine, but can be 3D printed pretty easily.

On the top toolbar select utilities, the rightmost of 6 words, there you can find addins. The menus got changed at some point.

You can use almost any CAD software you want, what I'm using is Fusion360. Alternatives include FreeCAD, OnShape, possibly SolidEdge community edition, and a few more that all cost a ton of money.

Fusion360 is criminal stealing cloud shite, FreeCAD is total crap, OnShape again cloud garbage, SolidEdge community, I have no idea, but it sounds like cloud garbage ... The only free one is FreeCAD, but it's horrendous! Alibre is probably the best standalone, while on sale... about $1300.00
