Mel, (Garbage Man Piper), posted a video talking about the possibility of converting a 6mm Savinelli into an 8mm filter pipe. I had never heard of this being accomplished before, and decided to give it a shot.
This project should not be done by anyone who does not have the ability to replace a stem should the end up destroying their original stem while trying this conversion out.
The process is relatively straight forward.
1. Identify your pipe as having the required material in the stem (at least 10mm diameter).
2. determine the depth that you need to reach with your drill bit. for me it was 32mm.
3. mark your drill bit with tape or permanent marker to keep track of progress.
4. begin drilling by chucking up the smallest bit that will just fill up the hole, and slowly turn the stem onto the bit. DO NOT USE THE DRILL TO DO THIS!
5. once your depth has been reached, work up to the next drill bit until you are within .5mm of final diameter. (8mm in this case)
6. finish the process by reaming the tenon to 8mm using a machined reamer.
7. test fit, and if all went according to plan, enjoy your pipe with 8mm filters!
I hope you enjoyed the video.
