Mel, (Garbage Man Piper), posted a video talking about the possibility of converting a 6mm Savinelli into an 8mm filter pipe. I had never heard of this being accomplished before, and decided to give it a shot.
This project should not be done by anyone who does not have the ability to replace a stem should the end up destroying their original stem while trying this conversion out.
The process is relatively straight forward.
1. Identify your pipe as having the required material in the stem (at least 10mm diameter).
2. determine the depth that you need to reach with your drill bit. for me it was 32mm.
3. mark your drill bit with tape or permanent marker to keep track of progress.
4. begin drilling by chucking up the smallest bit that will just fill up the hole, and slowly turn the stem onto the bit. DO NOT USE THE DRILL TO DO THIS!
5. once your depth has been reached, work up to the next drill bit until you are within .5mm of final diameter. (8mm in this case)
6. finish the process by reaming the tenon to 8mm using a machined reamer.
7. test fit, and if all went according to plan, enjoy your pipe with 8mm filters!
I hope you enjoyed the video.

Awesome well done! Artie’s place gave me the idea! So kudos to Art and you for pulling it off. I actually have seen two ways to do it and your is more conservative which works for me! Again Well Done my man!🍭🐓👶

My reason for trying it out is due to the fact that I have several hundred 8mm filters, and the only pipes I have that take them are the ones I bought from Amazon when I first started in the hobby. I do not smoke those guys any longer. So my filter stash has not decreased at all. Now I can use those filters in a pipe that I love! If I have the option, I always use a filter. Be it a paper medico, or a balsa "filter". Its nice to now be able to use an 8mm as well.

Great video! Might try this on m Savinelli. The 6mm charcoal filters are just too restrictive, but I like the draw of the 9mm ones. I suppose I could use the 6mm paper filters, but they don't filter as much as charcoal

Very nice approach to this, seems fairly safe to not blow out the side or drill too deep into the stem. Having worked in a machine shop, the reamer is a perfect tool in my humble opinion to ensure a consistent end result. And that material should be negligible if almost nill to wear on the reamer tool so last almost forever. Happy piping brother.

Yeah, I lost some video, and I went into detail about using a reamer, but the dang camera lost its mind! No worries. It worked perfectly.

@@tucsonpiper9065 I could tell from your approach that it'd be highly unlikely for it to not turn out right. Maybe time consuming, but part of the fun. At least it is for me.

I did this on my Savinelli Tundra. I used a 8.3mm bit and worked just fine. I went a couple of mm too deep and the result is the filters moves Back and forth a little when you smoke, it does not bother me but watch out. This happened because when I devasted the first mm of the tenon (which it is slimmer than the rest of the tenon), I fortot to Compensate this lenght, my 8mm filter should stick out more than the 6 Mm now.

Hi, what an interesting job, but you should definitely have a good team of tools to do it. I love to see how you improve the pipes 👏🏻👏🏻

I agree. No one should attempt this modification without the tools required to replace a stem if you end up damaging the one you are modding.

Me stem is 9.5mm thick. Wondering if there will be enough meat left if i drill out for a 9mm filter.

Just found you. I started smoking a pipe 2 months ago, and have found that I much prefer smoking with a filter, because my tongue cane handle Virginias without one. I ago prefer 9mm over 6mm. I’m just curious, how is an 8mm reamer working for a 9mm filter? Also, since you seem to be a filter smoking guy what do you suggest for pipes? I don’t find many American pipe makers making pipes for filters. What pipes have you found that take 9mm?

I never really use filters, but, being I smoke out of a Dr. Grabow, which can accept a 6mm filter, what kind of filter would you reccomend? I've been going without the filters so 😅

I'm a fan of the paper filters made by Medico. They work very well and never tear due to their plastic outer sleeve.

Question. You restore pipes right? I've just purchased an old medico pipe, would really love to have it restored and I'm not sure how to go about the process of restoring it. Has A LOT of cake and carbon buildup.
@tucsonpiper9065
@tucsonpiper9065 5 жыл бұрын
Cake is easy to get rid of. You can get a cheap reamer on Amazon for a couple of bucks. Even without that you can get rid of the cake with anything that is stiff and dull. Beyond that, the condition of the pipe will determine how to move forward.

@@tucsonpiper9065 you mind if I send you pictures of the pipe? I've done a little work to it. I don't have much of a before picture, but, lemme tell ya, someone smoked this thing heavily. You couldn't fit a cigarette filter into the bowl due to the carbon buildup, and the stem is still stained. Not sure how to go about getting rid of the stains in a 70 year old pipe so.

Not a risk if you are perfect, like me.... 😉 just joking. There is a reason I was aggressive with the mod in this video. I wanted to show that if you use the right tools, you dont have to be concerned about damaging your stem.
