Learn how to easily modulate using something known as a pivot chord. Do you struggle to modulate from one key to another? Then this is for you. Lots of people can write or improvise music but get stuck in one key. Changing key, or modulation as it is known, provides musical variety, progression, and development of ideas. In order to modulate in a conventional way, one needs to use a pivot chord ie a chord common to the key you’re leaving and to the key you’re joining. This music theory lesson explains how to do just that. Effective modulation will transform your improvisation and your composition.

@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB 4 жыл бұрын
Glad you like the tune. Of course the chord of A is the Dominant chord of D so that’s true. As long as a G# is introduced on the approach, often as part of V in the new key, then the A chord has to be regarded as the tonic chord in the key of A.

Hi Gareth. I'm composing a piece (ABACA)that modulated from Am to Dm to Am to Gm to Am. For Am to Dm I'm using Dm as the pivot chord (IV and I) which sounds fine but I'm a bit concerned that it's the end of a section but doesn't follow a conventional cadence. (I'm finishing VI - IV). My other option was to finish on the tonal center (Am) and start the Dm section on Am (V) but that sounded like too 'hard' a cadence with a stop/start feeling I didn't want. Am I right to prioritise the modulation over a formal cadence? My ears say 'yes' but I thought I'd check if I'm missing anything! Thanks as always for your great videos Steve

I have followed most of your videos on modulation. It seems to me that there are a few characteristics of modulation - different types. 1. The type where there is an abrupt change - maybe to shock - or just to raise tension. Typically a rise by a semitone or a tone. Often in pop music towards the end of a piece. Type 2: more subtle where the modulation may not be noticed - nothing too obvious. Also often modulation raises the pitch of the tonic. One thing I've often wondered - if there's a sequence to go from key 1 to key2, does reversing the order work? I suspect not always - or at least not always well. If the tonic key has been raised by a modulation, what is the best way to go lower again?
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB Жыл бұрын
Good observations. It often doesn’t work simply to reverse a modulatory pattern but there are ways to lower the key eg using V-I in the new key or by using a pivot chord or by using a chromatic chord.
@FindingsOfAnArmouredMind
@FindingsOfAnArmouredMind Жыл бұрын
Dave, the first one is not a modulation, it's a key change. A modulation is by "default" subtle and, as our beloved teacher said, it's this "room" that helps us to transit from one room to another. Or a better analogy, a modulation is the stairs that helps us to move from one floor to the next 😂
@DavidMartland-wx8fm
@DavidMartland-wx8fm Жыл бұрын
@@FindingsOfAnArmouredMind I agree that modulation can be subtle, but there’s also the somewhat abrupt “truck drivers change”, or as someone else has described it, “The Great American key change.” A modulation may be temporary, or more permanent. One thing I’ve learnt over the last few years is that key signatures and keys are not equivalent. It is more or less possible to write tonal music in any key with any key signature, though it may get ugly!

Is there any SW to assist with modulation? Ideally the SW should allow entering the last few chords before the point where modulation should start, setting the length in bars and beats for the modulation to happen, setting the target key and should then suggest different chord progressions / arpgeggios for the modulation.

Great video. Is there any ''rules'' where to modulate? As long as you use the pivot and it sounds okay it's fine? Theory wise i mean. If it sounds good, it usually is good right :D ? I listen to heavier music like Mastodon and Death and i sometimes wonder why they go to certain places when the key changes. And Mastodon does alot of harmonies by raising or lowering the melody shape 5 half steps so does it mean there are two different keys in play at those sections? You understand what i mean? :D

Basically if it sounds good go for it! The pivot chord or even a pivot note are the conventional means but sometimes shock modulation works in the right context.

Help wanted, in a lot of 80's pop songs, particularly by Stock/Aitken/Waterman, many of their songs have the Verse in a key 4 semi tones below the key of the Chorus. As an example, the Chorus might be in C Maj and the Verse is in A Flat Major (or their relative minor keys). Why would they always seem to use the 4 semi tone difference between the Verse and the Chorus? Regards, David
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB 4 жыл бұрын
That’s a typical submediant shift using a pivot note rather than a pivot chord eg in that example the note C is the root of a C major chord but it’s also the 3rd in an Ab major chord so it’s used to move from the former to the latter and works very well.

From G Major to B Minor you could modulate using a B Minor chord because it’s chord l in B minor and chord lll in G Major. You could also use chord Vl in G Major, which is chord lV in B Minor. Having used a pivot chord then use the chords for B Minor, with accidentals for that key.

In classical music, the composers change the key of the piece from one key to another in a new section. For example: Sonatas and Sonatinas have sections A, B, A' which feature different keys. But, the composers don't use any sort of Pivot Chord to change the key of the piece between two sections. Yet, the modulation does not feel bumpy. In a piece of Chopin I am currently playing, Chopin changes the key from C# Minor directly to Db Major in the next section. The sudden change from a Minor key to a Major key without a pivot chord should feel bumpy but it is not so. Why?
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB 4 жыл бұрын
Composers modulate frequently within sections as well as between sections. Baroque and Classical composers nearly always use pivot chords. By the time you get to Chopin and the Romantic composers, life has become more adventurous - sometimes they simply use a pivot note eg C#/Db as in your example and sometimes there is no pivot at all, particularly by the late Romantic period.

When modulating between two minor keys, I assume the pivot chord does need to be avaiable in both harmonic versions of the scales, doesn't it? E.g. when I modulate from A minor to E minor, I couldn't choose a chord that includes a "d" because it's natural in A minor, but raised in harmonic E minor.

Is it typical to use the dominant of the new key after the pivot chord to establish the new key?
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB 4 жыл бұрын
It isn’t essential but often it makes the modulation more definitive, especially if we use V7 in the new key.
@anfarahat
@anfarahat 4 жыл бұрын
The reason I see is that the dominant is the only primary chord that contains the leading tone of the new key. And since the leading tone is the one that distinguishes the new key from the old key moving clockwise in the circle of fifth. Apparently this theory does not work moving anticlockwise on the circle of fifth as the chords containing the distinguishing accidental are the second and the fourth chords of the new key, as opposed to the fifth.

Whichever direction you take around the Circle of 5ths you can use V7 in the new key in order to introduce the accidental for the new key.

I'm not sure about this. The "new key" doesn't sound like a modulation. It sounds like it's still in D, and when it ends, it sounds like it's ending on the V of D, not the I of A. I am no expert but it seems to me that this is because you didn't prepare the move to the new key eg with V of A or some such device. Also I just noticed that the ending is E A ie in D that would be II V..... which of course then just wants to resolve to I ie D.
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB 5 жыл бұрын
If you listen carefully you will hear the accidental for the new key being introduced. It’s subtle because a pivot chord is used to transition from one key to the next to make the modulation smooth.

@MrMikomi I know what you mean and felt the same. I guess if this is the whole piece, we've technically modulated to A. But it's not a very strong modulation so it sounds like a passing modulation in a piece that's missing two more phrases. I hear it immediately going on to something like F#7, Bm, A, D and then repeating the first phrase back home in D again, which it feels like we never really left, merely having a peek at the key of A. However, if I modify the second phrase so that it ends B, E, my ears happily accept another two phrases in the key of A and ending there.
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB 4 жыл бұрын
Of course some modulations are strong, while others are more subtle. The main thing concerns accidentals that introduce the new key and that determines the difference between a chord being l in one key or V in another for example.
