I love your videos for a lot of reasons!....One of the best features is that you do NOT dub in unnecessary, loud, obnoxious background music (noise) like a lot of folks so. I like hearing what's going on naturally, and being able to hear your commentary....

Hey, Sam! Best wishes for your surgery recovery! But don´t forget, there´s a reason, the most cruise boats has there toilets near the center of the boat! Imagine, you are sitting on the "throne" in heavy weather! 😨😜 What I mean is: I fear, you´ll regret it, if you place your toilet at the bow... Also I would stay with the conventional bunk! If you fear for a wet bed in heavy weather, You can put a camping camping mat on top of you bed. And even if your bed is wet already, you will sleep warm and cozy - no way to compare with a pipe bunk, like in a racer! Racer use pipe bunks primarily because of there weight, I guess! The foam mat you can find some times for 5 or 10 bucks in a walmart or any supermarket. And you don´t have to damage anything! 🛠😉 What you will really need, specially if you want to go to the North sea or Baltic sea is a good radar, an two way AIS, or, at least, an electric radar reflector!

Good idea re v berth. We had a withholz departure 35 with tg3 Bluewater cabin arrangement. 2 setees and 2 quarterberths, which one was a double. The forward compartment was all storage and head. Worked great and none of the clutter filled the main salon. I made removable filler pieces so you could remove some gear and put the panels back to have a double berth for guests. Then on trips it would convert back to a storage and head. Looks,like great service in Oriental. Once we male it to nc I probably would haul the boat for storm season and continue south. Was going to haul in Chesapeake, but nc is much warmer. Good luck on all the projects.

Should look into a Boom Kicker. They really help to put your boom back into your control without the use of a topping lift or lazy jacks. I single-handed all of the time and it has been such an indispensable piece of equipment on my boat. It's a simple, well-made and rugged device.

We used to tied a line around the halyards and secure them to a stay to prevent them from slapping.

Hi Sam. Love your videos. I believe your Windpilot was a great deal and it should be capable of much better steering than the "S" curve you are seeing. I do not believe it is oversteering. I think it is not responsive enough to "check" the rotating inertia of the boat as it comes back on course. I believe one major contribution to this unresponsiveness is the backwards slant of the paddle necessary to clear your swim platform. This backward slant makes the paddle very hard to be rotated by the vane (as evidenced by the bent pushrod you suffered). The closer the paddle is to vertical, the more balanced it will be and the easier the vane can rotate it.

Just bought a very infrequently used Alberg 30 and she sounded like your boat when I tried to get her started. A clean up of the carburetors and some fuel cleaner ...... yeah !!! When you douse a head sail, pull down from as far forward as possible- it's easier and better for the luff tape. Remember it's a triangle, so as it comes down it goes forward and when you pull on the leach you are pulling it aft. On big race boats it used to be a thing (bowman hauls down from the stem, mid-deck gang's job to collect it and nobody tries to pull DOWN at all because that just slows the drop)

Thanks for the video Sam. Just a suggestion to stop the cable slap in the mast. The inside of your mast may be different. I took light duty pvc and sawed a slot straight down its length and slid the slot on the inside. The cables were run inside the tubing as it was installed. It will take more than one 20 ft piece of pvc. but it keeps everything in its place inside the mast and no rattle or slapping. Hope it works for you. Worked great for me. No slap sure makes things so much better.

Consider putting something like pieces of treated ply under the stands to help make sure they don't gradually sink into the wet ground and stands really should be chained together under the hull. Im on yr 4 of a quick refit lol

I noticed other people who routed rain water into their onboard fresh water tanks, seemed like a great idea to me. Hard to do if you don't have a deck fitting to do it with. Just a thought.

I think you got a good deal on the move and haul out, its worth the peace of mind knowing it's done right.

The cost may be better the paying the yard to having to be on the hard and their electricity and your traveling back and forth. All your tools are in shop and your more motivated as the boat is right beside you. In bad weather and cold you have shelter. Best wishes on the projects.

I went to Pamlico County Middle School and High School until I moved back to Miami Springs Fl. in 11th Grade . I learned to sail when I was 13 years old - in ORIENTAL ! I also have a Yanmar diesel that I have overhauled myself. I highly recommend that you remove the fuel injector and have it reconditioned. It makes an amazing difference in performance and starting.

Think about adding a big waterpoof hatch in the companionway. it's a big project but it's much better than those old timey wooden slats. In a rollover those slat style companionways let in water like a waterfall!

When you said it cost more because they didn't want to splash that trailer I was gonna Say! Yeah those hydraulic rigs are nice - you need a lift at home otherwise (which is doable, with time) You have a list alright but what a great spot.

What I heard was in mast combination wire ties and swimming pool hollow noodles, had considered it on all external halyard mast

With the boat out of water we can see one of the great advantages of a full keel sail boat, how well protected the propeller is.

f.Y.I. haul out on my similarly sized boat is the same price, but whee I am it's a super bargain compared to the other yards up here. So you did well there. As far as the stands go, I think for less than double the price you may have been able to buy the 5 stands. Cool to have the boat on your own land, that must be a good feeling. Hopefully the neighbors are cool with it.

I know they say boats look so much bigger once they are pulled out of the water, especially full keel boats, but I'm still overcome with how SMALL she looks and how MUCH you have done with her. Terrifying for me to think of you crossing the Atlantic in The Pickled Herring, but I also know, if anyone can do it, you can. hunder percent.

I'm just south of Raleigh and looking to do my own thing next off season or so, so all props you throw to locals in Oriental / New Bern / Beaufort etc. are not falling on deaf ears. They're doing right by themselves to give you the discount for bringing them up on your channel, and I'll be sure to let them know that Sam sent me when I need their services myself! If I get a weekend or two freed up I'll hit you up, you can have some free labor no problem.

Hi Sam, Looking forward to your project videos for the winter. You may wish to consider Sailrite lifetime PTFE / Tenera thread as you redo the bimini and stackpack. It will last the life of the canvas. It is four or five times as expensive as the regular thread, but considering the labor to sew the project and the fact that you don't want the stitching to fail during a trip, it seems worth it. Also, I highly recommend the Sailrite Bimini and StackPack kits. I sewed them both with great success (you need an Ultrafeed type machine, but I think you have one.). For the main stack pack, I did not want to sew the stack-pack to the main (ala Doyle). I designed mine with an open bottom and sail slugs every 12", (to allow water drainage and ventilation), and while my old mainsail had a foot bolt-rope, I found that I just rig the mainsail loose-footed with only the tack and clew fastened, and it works just fine. Thus the stackpack is fastened to the boom with the sail slugs, and the mainsail is cradled free-footed within it. That makes it two independent pieces. I used 3/4" PCV pipe 12' long as the upper rails for the stack pack and the lazy-jack lines attach to the top of the stack-pack rails with tabs. It works great. Drop the main in, zip it up and you are done. The 1st and 2nd reefs all work just as before, within the stack pack. Best wishes.
