This was perfect! The homeowner assumed we needed 3-5 people to remove the pool table but two of us did it by just following your video. The hard part was getting the slate up a stairway with a 90° bend but that just took a little more time.

This video is helpful in more ways than one! I've seen many videos here on KZfaq and got less info because some people think they know what they're saying and doing! Boy was I wrong! However, your video was the best by far and I've learned that those holes that hold the rails are what make the pool table even and stable. (besides the leveling part) I now have a concept in mind and will put that idea to the test once I make the design of a new slate for my pool table. - Thanks For The Upload! I Love It!

After watching your video, reading every comment and your personal advice that you answered from experience, I can say with complete confidence and applaud that you are a "teacher". One who revels in the success of others with your knowledge forwarded in hand. A rare personal trait of which to be extremely proud. Respect may come grudgingly and late to the party from those whose life is left only to denigrate but respect will come. A fine man and person.

Thank you very much! I really do enjoy seeing people take the knowledge that I've given them and put it to good use. My dad was the type that, when he said to do something and I asked, "why is it done that way?", he would reply, "because I said so." That was never a reasonable response for me. I've always wanted to know why things work the way they do. The finer the detail, the more it holds my attention. And, for me, "why" is just as important as "how". I firmly believe that when you know exactly why things work the way they do, you're much less likely to want to take shortcuts and possibly/probably ruin whatever efforts you've put into the project to that point. Thank you for the compliments and the recognition of my efforts. You've brightened my day that much more!!!

Thanks for the video! Question, since the rails come off as two units is there a reason why you'd continue breaking them apart? Seems like keeping them together would save assembly?
@user-nj6pz3ke2r
@user-nj6pz3ke2r 7 ай бұрын
Thanks Doug, your videos are great. I spoke to you some time ago and sent you some pictures of my Brunswick 75 anniversary table. We need to move it roughly 450 miles from PA to NC. Some of the roads are very rough and there isn't any other way out and into the areas. The side rails of the table are 9' long and don't break down any smaller than that best I can tell. We have the table disassembled now and I plan on moving it after Christmas. I am planning on renting a 6x12 boxed U-Haul. I noticed you said to build a create and put in the trailer vertically. I can and will build a 3-section cage to hold the slate as tight as possible and strap to the walls of the U-Haul. I really don't have any other way to move because I know my truck isn't big enough and I don't want to move in an open trail per some of the comments I read before. I have several questions for you if I may: 1) would I want to wrap each slate in a moving blanket? 2) what would I want to have the bottom of the slate sitting on? 2x6 or ??? 3) the table is going to be stored for maybe 1 or several years until I refinish all the rails and aluminum pockets and skirts. They are in rough shape. 4) How do I store the slate until I'm ready to put back together. Does it have to be in a climate-controlled environment or in NC and I ok if it isn't. Thank you for your time. Dale
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations 7 ай бұрын
Hi Dale, First off, good luck with the move. I'm sure it will go just fine. I'll answer your questions in order... 1) No need to wrap the slates. As a matter of fact, the less they're able to move, the better. If you wanted to do something, put two of the slates face to face and the final one facing inward. This will leave the slate frame on the outside and will provide all the cushioning you'd want or need. 2) 2x6 would be overkill. However, they are cheap and can be repurposed. So, sure. That's fine. 3) Climate controlled storage would be best. 4) Store the slate vertically and leaning against a wall (stacked one in front of another). Again, climate controlled storage would be best. Wood doesn't like swings in humidity or temperature. Hope this helps. Doug

Hello Doug. Well, you've convinced me through your videos that I have the ability to assemble my own table. You're videos are complete and simple which makes them encouraging. I'd appreciate your opinion on what table to buy on line and from whom. It's for home use in a finished basement and although I'm no where near a pro player, I'd enjoy a table that's heavy and stout and plays well. Not a cheapie!! . A good rubber and quality cloth should be included. More of a contemporary style is preferred. You previously recommended 3/4" slate or better and you also recommended a hardwood slate liner. Ball return is optional. What would you buy in a 4 x 8? Thanks, Rich

These are exactly some of the things I wanted to know! Thanks for the vid. One thing though, in the QnA I think you said some tables have the cloth glued instead of stapled. Do you have to do anything different when taking the cloth off if you happen to get a table like that?
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations 2 жыл бұрын
Not really. Again, this is a "method" rather than an "exact" way of moving tables. Just be careful when removing the old cloth if it's a glue-down. Also, check out my video on reusing glue-down cloth during a move.

Hi, thanks for posting your videos. I don't know if you'll see my comment but a few questions I'm finding hard to get the answers to are; can I move my table a few inches this way or that way without dismantling? , And I see you have a rug under that table, our table is on tiled floor and it doesn't have a smooth sound as the ball rolls, could we slide a rug under to improve that, again without dismantling?

I'm moving my pool table from Tucson, Arizona to just outside of Chicago using a UPack 28' trailer. How do you recommend I put the slate in the trailer to prevent breaking the slate?
@CreativeRestorations
@CreativeRestorations 2 жыл бұрын
If you're doing a long-haul move and you're using a heavy duty truck, I'd suggest you crate up the slate. Something as simple as 1" x 4" pine from Home Depot or Lowes to make the crates out of would suffice. I would also put them on their side and strap them to the wall of the truck. If you've ever seen how plate glass is transported, you will have seen that they transport it on its side. That's how I would do it. But, again, strap it to the wall of the truck good and firmly so they can't fall over.

The cross beams would hide the seams between slates. So, you wouldn't necessarily be able to tell whether it's one piece or three. Chances are, though, it's three.

you reference short and long distance. I am going to move a table 200 miles does that create any issues in a pickup ? I was also thinking that if I stack the slate on top of each other that I should use a nice piece of plywood to give a firm smooth base to put the 1st slate on. Finally are Connelly tables a good table to move "semi-long" distance ? thank you !

1) Connelly makes good tables. 2) Plywood is less stable than slate. So, I'd stack the slate right on top of each other. 3) "Long distance moves" implies a move where a moving truck would be used. No issues whatsoever using a pickup truck for any distance (provided that the table is secure from rain/water). Good luck with the move!

How would you handle a single slate pool table? Just use more people to move the single piece of slate?

Hey Doug, so you suggest not wrapping the slates and just stacking them instead of wrapping with bubble wrap?

I would never recommend bubble wrap (even on long distance moves). It allows too much flex in the slate. If a slate can flex, it can break.
