Great video, Contreras Sensei. I especially appreciate your description of Fushikoml. I have been focusing on keeping tension in my left leg, from the waist through the ankle and that is making a big difference in having the ability to push forward and snap my left foot into position for the next motion. Thanks for the kendo tips. They are always useful.

Excellent! A topic I would love to see you cover is the concept of Itto ryu’s kiri otoshi as used in Kendo.

Thank you! Yes Kiriotoshi is a very interesting concept. I want to cover it but it will take me some time because I would like to do this with a good partner and recording in Japan is a bit troublesome, but as soon as I have the opportunity I will!

Hi! Thanks for the explanation. What I've been struggled the most is I always feel like I don't have a strong support from my left leg when I'm doing fumikomi-ashi. Not sure if my standing posture is off or simply having weak muscles. I also find out my shoulder and arms are too stiff when making hit which makes my move slower when striking. Thank you again for the video.

Im struggling with something similar and I will make a video about it, but something I have been noticing in my self and others is that many times this happens when you try to over extend the fumikomi. Are you in the discord server? Message me maybe I can explain better that way lol.

Hi, I’d like to learn how to step into the maai, whilst maintaining the feet, legs and posture in a stable base so they can be ready to push forward from the left foot for fumikomi. I seem to lose balance in one or all of those areas when stepping into Sensei, and especially in shiai. Thank you!

Hi Jose, thank you for your video. That's really helpful. I have watched another video from Kouda Kunihide sensei and Ryo Murase sensei. They recommend that after we stamp to the floor, we should slightly raise our right knee or raise our right heel immediately. That will help you to bring your left foot immediately and achieve hikitsuke. Could you please explain that? Cheers

This kind of movement comes down to 1 simple Idea. Use both legs for suriashi. People tend to focus only on the left leg but you should also pay attention to the right legs ability to pull your body and therefore left leg towards the direction you are moving to.
@Kendotips
@Kendotips Жыл бұрын
I picked up a drill in Japan that is pretty much what you saw on the video you mention. The idea is that you use your hamstrings to immediately straighten your body therefore bringing the back leg. I think is better I make a video or demonstrate it during one of my streams. Please remind me if you are in one and I will do it. ! Thank you again for your support.

nice basic video, thank you...some things aren't that exact, for example fumikomi isn't just pulling you forward, for example in tsuki you want stopping power from it

If is not a problem for your health I don’t see why not. I constantly practice with sensei who are over 60 years of age. Just make sure you work on the basics and have a solid foundation and good stability.

I'd love to know how centre of gravity plays into this? I'm 6ft5 and find I lose traction on the foot if I don't control my balance. Being tall is good for reach but it has its own issues.
@vincenthernandez1646

I’d love to see more discussion around this topic because I think this can affect enjoyment of kendo, especially at the beginner stage. I heard from multiple experienced practitioners that pear-shaped individuals have an advantage when it comes to having stability on the ground. Those with a V-shape are likely to have a reach advantage over those of the same height, but will come at a disadvantage.
@Dezzasheep
@Dezzasheep Жыл бұрын
@@vincenthernandez1646 Sometimes i feel like bambi on ice - but that might just be my kendo thats uselessly flapping about haha. Those with a lower centre of gravity seem to be able to stop, turn etc with relatively less swaying.

I wrote a whole answer and I erased it by accident so I will give you a summary, but feel free to pass by one of the live streams or the discord server if you want to talk more in depth. That been said here is my answer: Weather you are tall or short the foundations should be the same, many times tall people over compensate by bending their knees to drop the height and this causes a bunch of issues, The other problem I see with tall people is engaging the hands before the body (because many times they can hit without really moving) and this could also cause unbalance. My advise is this, break down the movements and try to make them natural, also become proficient on doing short and fast steps ( specially doing fumikomi correctly but not so long) and lastly find a kendoka that you can relate to and model him ( I recommend Teramoto sensei, He may not be as tall as you but he's quite tall and very good at moving his body). Please let me know if I can be of further help, Now let me copy this response in case I erase it again! Thank you for watching

Some times I think of Kendo as a big Rock Paper Scissors game, but I think anyone can have an advantage based on their knowledge of them selves and how they execute their movements. Practice, practice, practice!!! Let me know if I can be of help and thank you for watching! Maybe I can open that topic for discussion on one of my streams!

Isn't it funny that we do the opposite of what Musashi taught? Musashi commented, "To move from one place to another, you slightly raise your toes and push off your foot from the heel, forcefully," and stressed "In my strategy the way of moving is no different from normal walking on a road."
@Kendotips
@Kendotips Жыл бұрын
Ah interesting point. Kendo is different to what he was looking to achieve for starters in Kendō we avoid turning the hip which makes pushing with the heel highly unnatural. I personally think old school swordsmanship is a great inspiration to what we do but at the same time the context is different. Thank you for watching and your comment.
@BlueyFromMelbShuffle
@BlueyFromMelbShuffle Жыл бұрын
The ”normal walking” Musashi advocated is quite different from how we walk in the modern times, and quite a bit closer to how we move in kendo. Also the toe raise and pushing off the heel is quite different from the mental image I’m sure is quite easy to picture from the text alone. It’s not exactly the same as style of movement taught in kendo, but pretty close imo. But yeah, kendo’s Itto-ryu history sure shows in the techniques, and it’s not the most similar style to Niten Ichi -ryu I can think of.
@Kendotips

@@BlueyFromMelbShuffle I didn’t want to mention the way of walking because I feel I would have written 7 paragraphs hahaha so you put it very nicely thank you for sharing I once had a conversation with a sensei that explained how the style of walking in Kendo is more familiar to Japanese (even now a days) than to us westerners. The sway from our hips left and right is much more pronounce. He also gave me the image when you see a lady approaching the husband in the house how they do short but quick steps without raising the feet. Anyways I digress but I hope I get the idea through. Regardless thank you very much for your input!!!
