Jessica, I had a cherry tomato in a pot on my front porch last year. My daughter (about your age) helped me get it inside before winter. So I think it was January when it was almost gone I decided to try to root clippings .... I have 3 cherry tomato clones from the last year's plant!!! And my 4 year old granddaughter was so happy to pick cherry tomatoes every time she came to visit. I told her I'll have a new one for her to pick from this year. I love your channel. You don't know me, but I feel like I have a new friend in you. Thanks for all you do. God bless you.

Another way to get loads and loads of free tomato plants is to forget to cut out the seeds when you toss scraps into the compost. We had more than 20 mystery volunteer tomato plants emerge in the cold compost pile, and like a cute puppy left on your doorstep, we couldn't just leave them there. We had to create new rows to plant them. Because they grow so quickly, would you say that a sucker is born every minute?

You are so genuine and helpful. Thank you so much. I’m a 70 year old Mimaw that has only been gardening about 4 years, so these videos are a tremendous help. Because of the Coronavirus, my age and health, my family didn’t want me to go out to the nurseries. I was late trying to get my transplants so when I ran to the nursery in March right before lockdown I didn’t pay attention and only got home with one indeterminate and the other five determinate. But, better than none. I’ve learned a lot from your videos. I will definitely try to use my suckers. God bless you and you sweet family.❤️🍅

Mind blown!! I felt bad because I had people who wanted tomatoes but I didn’t have very many left now I will have some for them and they can make more as well! I live in central Alabama and I was wondering if you had planted tomatoes for a fall harvest. Now I know and I am doing the same! Thanks so much. I have been trying to garden for 5 years and have failed 5 years. But you encouraged me to keep trying because you also struggled with growing things. Now you have a beautiful garden. This year I am actually growing vegetables and flowers. My garden is flourishing. I literally go out every morning to make sure I am not dreaming and my plants are still alive lol. Love your channel!

Hi Jess! I have had some decent success starting tomato suckers. I totally agree, keeping the soil completely moist is super important or the sucker will wilt and be done. Partial shade helps with the stress as well. We have a shorter season here in NE Wyoming (last frost is June 1-10 depending on location), so starting suckers and getting a harvest is a complete gamble. It’s fun to try! ~ Nicole 🌻

I actually was picking suckers and decided to stick one that was about 8-9 inches back into the soil in a bare spot of the garden. It went completely droopy to the point where the leaves and stem were flat on the ground. I kept watering it even though I was positive the little guy was gone, but on the 3rd day, low and behold, he rose again 😁

Another thing you can do with the suckers is overwintering. In Georgia, we get mild winters, but cold enough to kill the plants. What i do is, torwards the end of the season, take some suckers get them going inside. Now, the old plants if they did well and still look healthy i’ll cut them and leave about a 8-10” of stem on the ground. And i’ll wrap them with trash bags. A few weeks before the last frost, i cut the suckers that were growing inside and graft them to the stems i left on the ground. And keep them wrapped on the trash bags until the frost danger is gone. They grow extremely fast, because it has an established root system supporting the cutting i grafted. If i’m triying to get more plants fast, i’ll leave a bit of stem on the cutting i grew inside, and wait until i get suckers and graft them on to those. Another thing you can do with the suckers is to air layer them before removing them. I’ll grab some moss and wrap it around the sucker i want and keep it wet for a few days(i’ll wrap plastic over the moss if its hot out). In about a week, the sucker is ready with roots and can go straigh into the ground. Another thing, here in the south, indeterminates dont do well on the heat, but you can get a harvest before the heat gets to them. After i get that harvest, i’ll graft determinate cuttings to the indeterminate. If i intend to do this to a plant i leave a main stem and a sucker going. That way i can do the grafts one side at the time. It’s pretty impressive what you can do with these plants, so don’t be afraid to experiment. Worst that can happen is you kill a plant.

I want to root some cuttings just to be safe in case those tomatoes don’t make it through the winter (in South Texas). i had come across the grow from sucker cuttings a month ago and decided to experiment. my plant was pretty small at the time, and because i was so excited to try this out i cut off a sucker that was no more than an inch and a half tall. put it into an egg carton with some soil and sure enough its grown roots and its now its 3 inches tall in a new pot. experiment successful! for sure it would be better to let the mother plant do some more of the growing for you but if you are just bursting to try this out you can start with a smaller sucker.

Water is definitely necessary for the cuttings but it helps to dip the cutting in a rooting/cloning solution/gel/powder(Clonex). I’ve noticed a difference...trust me people. You can put them in water in the sun and they will root extremely fast...if you put it in soil I would keep them inside for a couple of days.

I have accidentally broken a tomato plant. I pulled the base and roots up, then replanted the part that was broken off, kept it watered well like twice a day, and it grew. Break off the lower leaves and remove existing fruit.

Jess thanks so much you are saving me tons of money. Today I also bought three plants that had two in each after watching one of your videos. I love to share great ideas so I appreciate. Blessings to you my sister!

This is a great way to extend your tomato lives. I like the idea of giving them to friends.

When I propagate flowers, I’m told we should remove most of the leaves to give the plant more energy to grow roots. Is this the case with tomatoes too?

Yes! I've been waiting for this since you mentioned it in an earlier video! I have always had better luck propagating than growing from seeds, so glad to learn how to do this for tomatoes

Omigosh!!! I have thrown away literally piles of suckers in past years! This is such timely advice as I just planted my grown from seed tomato plants into large pots. Oddly enough I have no idea what kind they are. The seeds came as a "gift" along with other seeds I had ordered. The little packet of 10 seeds just said "tomato seeds". As such, they have grown very nicely so far. Now I have to go out and see if there might be a sucker I can snip 😂. Thanks, Jess! 😍
