This is an excellent intro to the genre! So much material to play with, laid out in an extremely clear presentation style that doesn’t linger too long or over explain things. I like that you keep the video moving with pop ups instead of stopping to cover those things

I’m ecstatic! I’ve played for years, and every time I heard this type of music, I would just meld with it and look for my guitar, but had no idea what genre it was. I only recently learned it’s called neo soul, and this is what I’ve looked for my whole life. I can’t wait to dive in!!!

Could anyone explain why Bbmaj7 is labeled as the bVI? Isn't Bb already the 6th note in Dmin?

Thanks for your comment. Bbmaj7 is labelled as bVI because it's the minor 6th degree. You're right saying Bb is the 6th note of the D min (natural) scale. But every (natural) minor scale - and minor key - has the minor 3rd, minor 6th and minor 7th. This results in labelling the chords as bIII, bVI, bVII. The upper case of the roman numeral is because the chords on those degrees are major. If instead you notate VI (without the flat) I'm expecting the major 6th degree which is B. 1) Get a Greer Lightspeed 2) Get a JHS Morning Glory 3) Hardly use them 4) Play lame Church worship music through an overpriced clean amp with no tubes, your tone MUST sound like your the backing guitarist for Vanilla Ice, dont forget to add one obligatory disorganised jazz chord thrown in there.

@@TheBeardedGuitarist I think he's being sarcastic and Beard obviously gave the epic touché back but it's kind of rite that is how a lot of people seem to make Neo Soul with overdrive pedals barely used and a solid state amp and a worship style of playing with slight jazz influence
