AZ has it's heat challenges for sure! I think you would very much enjoy my livestreams on Mondays at 12pm. A great chance to interact with other gardeners and have access to questions for myself, SmartPot and Monterrey Garden team, as well. Hope to see you there, please say hi! CaliKim

I watched you do this last year, and although I do not plant in the ground, I do have 3 bins of potting soil that I saved from last fall when I lost stuff from the hurricane in my containers. I threw out the dead plants, saved the soil, and I have not bought one bag this spring for my container garden of 79 five-gallon pots and larger. :-) * bonus… I gave my mom a whole bin of potting soil! ❤️

We are doing the same in our garden as well as getting woodchips and leaves from neighbors when they chop their trees. We compost the leaves and we fill our new raised beds half way with woodchips to save on soil.

Thanks CaliKim you are always so helpful with ways to save our money. I would love to be able to make some compost but I just don’t think I have enough ingredients for it. Small, backyard, no trees for leaves, not too many food scraps.. Is there any way for me to do it? I don’t even have grass clippings 😣
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 ай бұрын
Thank you for the kind words (as always!) : ) Here are some workarounds for your scenario: Gather your compost ingredients, including kitchen scraps (like fruit and veggie peels, coffee grounds, and eggshells), any yard waste (like grass clippings and pulled weeds), and brown materials (like shredded paper, cardboard, or dried leaves). Alternate layers of green (nitrogen-rich) and brown (carbon-rich) materials in your compost bin or pile. a Aim for a roughly equal mix of greens and browns to maintain a balanced compost pile. Moisture and Aeration: Keep your compost moist, like a wrung-out sponge, to help the decomposition process. Turn or aerate your compost regularly to introduce oxygen and speed up decomposition. If you're using a compost bin, give it a good tumble every few days. Time and Patience: Composting is a natural process, so give it time to work its magic. Depending on various factors like temperature and moisture, you can expect to have usable compost in a few months to a year. Harvest and Use: Once your compost has broken down into dark, crumbly goodness, it's ready to use! Spread it in your garden beds, mix it into potting soil, or top-dress your plants for a nutrient boost. Learn as you go! Experiment! Keep us all posted! CK

What if you have NO soil?

I do this - with oversized storage tubs and tight fitting lids. Store them under my deck - it works great. Say - around time stamp 2:34, you have flower bags hanging over the deck rail? I LOVE those. Are those in your smart pot collection? Thanks - great vid.

What do you do with soil that had diseased plants in it?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 ай бұрын
Hi @jsfarmgirl First off, don't reuse the soil for the same type of plant that was affected (I don't use it anywhere else either). Instead, consider solarizing the soil by covering it with clear plastic to heat it up and kill off pathogens. Alternatively, you can compost the soil, BUT MAKE SURE your compost pile reaches high temperatures to kill any harmful organisms. Last, good sanitation practices like cleaning your gardening tools can also help prevent disease spread 😊🌱 And...THANK YOU for subscribing! Means tons to me and CameraGuy. CaliKim

Thank you! So wants the soil goes outside, it stays outside. If the seeds don't germinate indoors, do you save and re-use this sterile seed starting mix in a separate container indoors?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 ай бұрын
Yes if the soil is sterile, save it, add new worm castings and go for it. If the soil has bugs...sterilize FIRST.

I remember my Mom doing this with her house plants. She had never bought any soil, but rejuvenated the soil (somehow). And so yes, I started doing this years ago, once I had quite a few empty (no veggies) containers with soil in them. @calikim29 But, I do have one question: What do you do with a container that’s infested with big black ants? Creeps me out, so I’m tempted to just dump out that container with the ants. I think it’s a Hugh colony. 🐜🐜🐜😳
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 ай бұрын
Great memories!!! First, try sprinkling some food-grade diatomaceous earth around the container. It's like kryptonite for ants but safe for your plants. You can also create a barrier by putting cinnamon or citrus peels around the edges of the container. Ants aren't big fans of those scents. And if all else fails, a good old-fashioned deep clean of your container with soapy water should shoo them away. Hope this helps! Thanks for following if you are not already. CK

so let me get this straight, you let all the chemical from the plastic can leach into your soil, to then you use that soil to grow food?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 ай бұрын
Storing soil in a cleaned plastic trash can is generally safe, especially if the trash can has been washed thoroughly and is made of high-quality, food-grade plastic. However, if the trash can is made of low-quality plastic or has been exposed to harsh chemicals (which mine has not) there's a possibility of contaminants. You bring up a good point to be aware of and thanks for doing so respectfully. Ultimately, one can always choose another storage method. Thanks for watching ! CK
@tomzphone
@tomzphone 3 ай бұрын
You are right that food-grade plastic should be good most of the time, however, not when the plastic/containers are baking in the sun. Even regular drinking water bottles have been known to leach a lot of chemicals into the water if left in the sun. @@CaliKim29
