This is the first technique i saw over three years ago that convinced me to start buying his courses. I'm a 50+ year old and this kept 2 200+ pound wrestlers from flattening me out. And they were on their toes pushing!

So many light bulbs went off with this simple explanation. I'm the lightest and oldest guy on the mats, and I was getting frustrated how easy it was for others to flatten me out, then I have to fight my way out of the worst position. Didn't realize I was essentially doing it to myself with own hands/arms!

I see in the comments that people have some questions. But we also have to understand that he is showing one strategy to just this. Try it first because oftentimes, when we see something that is different, we immediately look for a counter , but he is speaking in that context of being flattened out. Of course, he has the escapes, but again, I learn and pressure test it before just looking for a counter to it without trying it with restiance

I learned a whole series similar to this arm-under, protection of elbows and shoulder, precise angles, etc. about 15 years ago from a Joe Moreira black belt. Changed my defensive side mount game. Funny thing is I trained with a black belt after who didn't know what I was doing and said it was "wrong" and when he passed and tried to move around to take my back, I got to my knees twice. He was silent after that.

It's funny how higher ranks or even black belts will say something is wrong when they don't know what it is! Sometimes it definitely is wrong but just because they don't know what it is doesn't mean it's wrong!

Nothing wrong in BJJ. There are things I am not familiar with but that doesn't make them wrong. Even a white belt with no experience will do something that will catch you off guard sometimes because it's new to you and innovative. But getting the underhook and hiding the elbow is not wrong, it's fundamental. This I have learned over the course of 17 years in BJJ.

I have a concern with this as it pertains to street fighting. I admit this is superior in BJJ when rolling but the moment punches come into the equation will this defense still work? On the street if someone passes my guard with the intent to follow up with a big punch to my face as he comes around, how does this protect me as opposed to the old shoulder/arm frame which would control the punching arm?

I think the only weakness of this is that your wrist is open for him to kimura you. Great video, gonna try this.

Also, makes it easy for the person to switch sides and take your back, because you'll have to flip side to side, if the person switches sides on you. I tried this and it wasn't working very well.

I’m wonder, if you leave your legs like that, what stops someone from grabbing your bottom leg and using it to leverage you over until you’re flat on your back?
@shanem8738
@shanem8738 Жыл бұрын
You can "ghost escape" because of the mobility potential of being on your side with both hands available. Additionally you can clear the grip by bending your knee and wedging the forearm followed by a leg extension without losing defensive arm position.

I saw that too.. if the opponent has too many game plans aside from flattening you on your back, this technique should have a backup plan.

Straight your arm and try to get on your knee fast and grab their leg then take them down, or whatever escapse you can use. U need to keep moving, in BJJ u stop moving you lose advantage.
@joshbarrows5520
@joshbarrows5520 Жыл бұрын
The problem I see is, 1.) you can get darced, 2,) anytime someone has tried this with me, I drop my shoulder to the far side hip, head to the outside, and drive my shoulder in the hip, flattening them out to north/south. 3.) the bottom elbow to the floor may work, up until the top player establishes a solid cross face. 4.) it assumes that the top player passing with no control over your hips. If I’m not passing with no hip control, I’m probably assuming and prepping to spin to the opposite side. I agree that establishing the underhook from bottom is a solid way to get out of side control but only if your able to drive a it up into the armpit as to wrestle up or escape it it the back. The way he’s teaching it seems more of a case where your looking to go belly down and attempt to reguard via turtle or trap and leg and drive them down.
