It is bad to hold it by it’s tail because their tails are very week so you must not hold it by the tail.

How do you know, when you first reach in there, that you won't meet up with the FRONT and get bit?

Hi Appy! Great question! You never know. The last turtle I caught in 2019 was by the head. It's very easy to tell that you are touching the turtles beak. As soon as you realize that's where you are you have to immediately shut its mouth and pull it out that way. Thank you for watching and commenting! My dad would always say the head end is almost always facing back into the bank on undercuts or facing upstream against the current. That wasn't always the case, I've seen him pull them out by a front leg & by the neck on rare occasions. He was bitten I think three times. The bites were cuts from the jaws, punctures from the hook part of their beak & deep bruising but nothing bad enough to keep him from going out again the next weekend. I'm probably gonna catch some flak on this but I think it's just folklore that they'll snap off fingers.

I am from southwest PA, no alligator snappers up here sadly! I'm breaking the rules a little bit and doing some foraging and fishing! I'm going to go check your videos out right now!

I'm from North Carolina ,my grandpa and great grandpa use to do this for food, I've never done it myself but have eaten turtle pretty tasty is have to say

What are some things you look for in creeks to know if there are turtles and what holes they might be in. Seems like a guy could walk a long way before he finds a hole with a turtle?

My dad & a lot of members of my family ( uncles & cousins ) catch snappers like that except they use a small branch about as long as your leg trimmed down to a stick. They poke around in & under drifts, undercut banks & in certain areas of the mud & sand while wadeing upstream in creeks & narrow rivers. Seems when you poke the stick in sand, mud, on a rock, on wood or on a turtles shell they make a different sound. A turtles shell when poked with the stick sounds similar to tapping yourself on the head with the knuckles of your fist with your mouth open. When they found a turtle they'd pull it out exactly like you do. What's it called when a stick is used?

Hey sthao1 we take some pictures and then turn them loose. It's just for fun. An old family tradition that I like to keep doing. Catch, photograph, and release.

I release all of my turtles. And I relocate turtles to places that don't have flourishing populations. I also remove hooks that trappers leave in their mouths. I do my part to help them. What do you do for them? Thanks for assuming that I mass murder turtles.......

🤣😂🤣 unfortunately yes. It freaking hurts. You do most of the damage yourself pulling your hands back after you are bit and it rips you up worse

Hi MJ, if you reach in and the turtle is facing you, you will most likely feel the point of its beak. As soon as you realize that is where you are you have to react extremely quickly and shut its mouth. I try to spin them 180 degrees and pull them out that way. In my video "snapper turtle noodling with Mike and Kaleb" I end up finding the first turtle facing me and have to pull him out by the head.
