PART 2: Use the 4 methods to "NOT MELT" silver solder to make a sterling silver pendant.
Designer Craftsman Jeweler, Greg Greenwood, explains the 'hows' and 'whys' of each soldering step as he crafts a pendant inspired by a UK student having silver soldering problems.
Viewing Part 1 of this series first will be helpful.
If you have ever re-melted prior silver solder joints, then this video is a must. Part 2 of 2

Nice to meet you Greg, nice presentation and excellent information. However, I'll just say it, your bench is way too neat! You make me look bad here in my messy busy bench. Thanks again.

It's quite cute how your face kind of color matches your tool board and your darker reddish shirt matches the wall below. Ahh, the things color artists see....😅😅 Fantastic video, as usual! 🌺

thanks so much for this video. It is exactly what I was looking for. How do you clean up all that solder, I'd be curious what your "go-to" method is, thanks for the GREAT videos!

Hello Mara, I'm glad my video was exactly what you were looking for! I try to avoid using too much solder in the first place so I don't have to clean up so much extra solder. Make sure you check out my video " Best Way to Ruin your Silver Jewelry Project". For cleaning up the extra solder, it all depends on the project. The 3M polishing disks work very well. I also use silicone wheels. They can be aggressive, so be careful with these. Thank you for watching and commenting. Greg Greenwood

Thank you so much for both of these videos. I learned a lot! Question, how do you texture your silver? It seems to be something you use often on your metal, those very close lines. Also, how long did you keep your metal piece in the liver of Sulphur to get the very subtle color difference? Thanks again for your time.

Hello Lori, Thank you for your kind comments. I appreciate it. You are more than welcome. The texture is made with a riveting hammer sharp cross pein (peen). Lots of hammer blows! I heat my pieces with a hot gun and then put in the liver of sulphur. I can then take it out and heat with the liquid on the metal and heat different areas. This gives me a little more control of the colors. Thanks for watching. Greg Greenwood

Hi Greg, highest compliment to the video and design of your pieces. Have got a few quick questions. Is there a specific kind of flux you use. My borax cone method tends to bubble a lot and crystallise, sending the solder pallions flying around. Also, any idea how the masters solder tiny prongs just next to each other, is it the very intense heat of the little smith that allows it . Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Hello Jope, Thank you for your kind comments. I appreciate it. I use Handy Flux. It is a borax flux that is already prepared. It lays down faster than the cone borax. Tip for you. After you put the flux on the metal. Heat it first which will burn off the extra water and it will lay down and remain "sticky". Put your pallions on when the metal is warm and the flux is still sticky. This will hold the solder in place. Soldering tiny prongs close to each other can be a problem. Your little smith will help you melt the solder quickly. You can solder the prongs all at once so you don't have to worry about re-melting the prior solder joint. This set up can be hard because you have to use several third hands or tweezers. But it is the easiest to solder. If you solder one at a time, use the "how to NOT melt solder" methods. I hope this has helped you. Thanks again. Keep watching. Greg Greenwood

Hello Sam, Thanks for your question. The yellow ochre is a powder. You can find it at: Rio Grande Jewelry Supply/ Part # 504080 / 8 oz. $10.25. Otto Frei Jewelry Supply / Part # 154.470 / 8 oz. $12.75. Or it is on Google at different suppliers. Lower price but less amounts. It mixes with water and works great. I hope this helps you. The best to you. Greg Greenwood

Hi Greg thanks for another great video and thanks for the plug for my Pinterest boards at andydaviesbythesea, if anyone wants to see the finished pendant after doming, they can see it there under handmade Jewellery (spelt the English way). Like you, I want my work to inspire others. Greg, somethings not totally clear to me, is at 4 minutes 27 seconds you say “because you’ve used yellow ochre as a anti reflow medium, you’re not worried about remelting the medium silver solder seams.” As the yellow ochre will have virtually no heat content it can’t act as a heat sink, so are you saying that you’re not bothered about a bit of localised melting on the understanding that the solder won’t reflow to a different location leaving japs in the joint? Thanks again for all your help and excellent videos. I don’t know if it’s clear to folks but having never made any silverwork before, the jewellery I have made and sold, in the last few months has largely been done with what I have learnt from your videos. Kind regards . . . Andy

Hello Andy, You are more than welcome. Thank you for your input. At 4 min. 27 secs, I was talking about the ring and bezel back sheet that had been soldered with medium solder. I had painted that solder seam with yellow ochre which is an anti-flow material, so I was not worried about the medium solder melting as I was soldering the wires to the ring with medium. The yellow ochre helps prevent the prior solder from melting which gives me time to solder the wires to the ring. Hope this clarifies your question. I am glad you are learning from my videos. This is the reason I am making all the videos. Thank you. Greg Greenwood
