I tried and it didn't make any scratching noise and I was proud then I realized my dad was having a zoom meeting and all the tries were heard by his students....

Bow grip is also a thing. That pinky at the end of the frog ain't there for decoration! Pressing down however slightly on the frog end of the bow relieves weight on the front end of the bow...and sometimes even the frog end. Draw the the bow across an open string and apply pressure from your pinky on the bow hand, you'll see differences in the volume and tone.

Lauren! I loved the humor in the start of the video with the "infomercial" touch. Please do that again. On the serious side, this video really helped me because I did not know that lowering your elbow and your hand actually adds pressure. Thank you so much, you are the best teacher! Please don't stop teaching!

But Wait! There’s more!! Order within the next hour and we’ll send you the magical “No Scratch” Mongolian horse tail hair for your bow absolutely free. Lauren, I’ve been scratching, I mean practicing for over a year now and I still seem to get that lovely scratch sound from time to time. And it never fails to happen when I am online with my instructor. You know, just so she can hear it. Anyway, THANKS for the tips. I really need to try that Patreon thing since I seem to get so much from your KZfaq videos. And I will be ordering some back up supplies off of Amazon (going through your page) as I had a nice failure yesterday. The violin, hanging nicely in its place on the music stand, decided to send the E string fine tuner into space. Luckily it did not put my eye out during its exit. The tail piece broke. I can’t complain as it is over 100 years old. I’m just glad that it didn’t damage the violin. I had a bag of parts on hand that I ordered a while back just for such mishaps. Things like a chin rest, pegs, bridge, fine tuners, and a tail piece. So I replaced the tail piece, strings, and I had to replace the E and G string pegs. The others just would not hold. Because I don’t overly enjoy the look of these new pegs that are in there, I’ll be ordering some more along with another tail piece and likely some more strings. The strings I put on are a lot nicer than what I had and you can really tell a difference, so I want to get some more for the future. Oh, and one last thing. I showed my instructor how well I was doing with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” that I learned from a KZfaq video, that now she wants me to continue with it. It has some key items in it that she felt will continue to enhance my D and G string scratching. I mean learning. Thanks.

Cervus-Venator - Firstly, thank you so much for the support. It means the world! 🙏 Secondly, you’re too funny! I’m glad your string didn’t take your eye out, or anything else, for that matter. Too bad about the tail piece, though. I’m happy to hear you’ve been having fun with Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Keep it up, & good luck!!

I've always had some bowing problems such as bow scratch, warble/bounce, etc unless my bow tension is about right. I'm a bit puzzled as to what the bow tension should be before playing, but after a few adjustments a lot of bow problems mostly just go away. The bow tension I've never been able to eyeball it and adjust it right, so that leads me to believe bow tension has a fine line between working and not working. I don't think a new player could pull out a new violin and figure out how to set up both the violin and the bow.
@TheTuneProject
@TheTuneProject 4 жыл бұрын
langhamp8912 - Bow hair tension really all depends on what you’re playing, but you’re right! There is a fine line and can be tough to know if you’re too tight or too loose. We generally want a bit of give in the bow hair for best results. Keep working at it & I’m sure you’ll get it! Good luck!

Everytime I time I start playing open strings it sounds fine but when I press on the E string to play a note it sounds scratchy, the rest of the strings are perfect except that one... So am I doing something wrong? Or is my bow...
@TheTuneProject
@TheTuneProject 3 жыл бұрын
The E string can be tricky! Just make sure you're using very little weight (the raised elbow will help) on that string especially, and keeping a steady, consistent bow speed. Good luck!

I watched a couple of videos before, but none of them talked about applying less pressure. I started bowing it softly and could feel the difference immediately in the sound. Though my hand begin to pain, but that is something I would need to practice and get comfortable with as less pressure needs to be applied. Thanks a lot
@TheTuneProject

Yay! Glad to hear that. As you are applying less pressure, also make sure your right hand is relaxed - you shouldn't have any pain while doing this. Good luck!

'back in my day' (I'm 55yo, trained classically and played out a bit through my mid 30s then put it away for some unknown reason) My training, however harsh, was to hold a slightly boiled egg between my thumb and forefinger on the bow hand. Crush the egg...too much pressure on the string and I had to clean up the resulting mess. Not enough pressure and the egg falls out...again I had to clean up the mess. Kind of a Myagi approach to violin for sure but I learned some great wisdom and skill...sadly I've lost it and looking for tips!

You're probably are not pressing your fingers down fully, if you're just hovering over let's say the E on the D string, it will sound scratchy. Push your fingers harder on the notes to prevent the scratchiness. Hope this helps.
