I'm getting pretty efficient at opening coconuts! Find out how open them to get to the tasty coconut water and coconut meat.

I watched about 15 videos on "how to open a coconut". This was definitely the most helpful! Thanks!

Wow! I feel honoured for you to say that, Thanks! Sorry for not being around or replying until now (it's a long story). I resurrected my channel after 12 years of KZfaq absence, I changed the channel name so it's more personal to me as I want to do more adventure stuff with it. Ayup is a Yorshire greeting (that's where I'm from), and Stuggy is my nickname since I was 7 years old!

@misscpb I just leave the brown layer on the coconut meat if using the coconut for a smoothie. You'll need a high powered blender to make the smoothie smooth though. Even if eating coconut pieces whole I usually leave the brown bits on. If I want a smoothie or dip and don't want the colour effected by brown bits, then I might first cut off the brown skin (but I hardly ever do).

@CindySprinkleTV A hammer will do it too. You don't even need a hard surface. Hold the coconut in the palm of your hand and hit it firmly all the way round several times, it takes a bit longer but works. A decent hammer (or old rolling pin) and a hard surface will have it open in no time though.

@TacticalElmo I would either eat the brown skin that is stuck to the coconut meat (eg put the removed pieces in a smoothie), or if I wanted just white coconut meat then I'd use a sharp and cut it finely off.

@misscpb I think that you still get all the goodness in a mature coconut compare to a young one. I agree though, the young coconuts are rather nice but a pain to get a hold of in the UK!

@eatmoreraw Thanks! I followed the postings about fat after seeing your video, that explains a lot.....At the moment I am juicing once a day, eating one salad, yesterday I had nettle and apple juice( I have such an abundant crop of nettles right now...) I am on a tight budget so I am looking for ways to get the greens without spending so much money, Hopefully I can add more to my diet soon( I have hundreds of beetroot and kale seedlings in trays to plant out soon).thanks for

Wow, it sounds super healthy. I've never juiced nettles, although I have occasionally blended them into smoothies. I'm not sure on the health benefits of eating heaps of nettles though. I hope it went well and that you are still managing to keep healthy :) Sorry for not being around or replying until now (it's a long story). @michaeljking I searched around for other ways of opening them too. One way is to use the back of a heavy knife and hit the coconut all the way round several times whilst holding it in your hand. This can be dangerous though, however my way is quicker! If you feel OK with one a day then go for it. I would love to do that but my body can't cope with on going high levels of fat, it knocks my energy levels. I explain why on my website and blog.

I thought it was good but this works for me. After removing the water, I put the coconut in double plastic bags and bash it against any concrete floor a few times and most of the coconut is off the shell already when you open the bag. What isn't, scoop out with a dull knife but be careful or put it back in the bag and give it another bash and just wash it afterwards. Good for letting stress out too!!! :-)

Thanks, you have saved me a lot of time, I was using a knife and hammer before, I have found the mini ones sold at Sainsbury's to have a really nice lot of milk and flesh, I have been eating the brown backing along with the "meat" (is one a day overdosing?) Its amazing to have something so tasty, wholesome and complete at the same price as a conventional snack bar.....

I think you would be ok on eating coconut one a day. They are high(ish) fat though, so it depends on what else you eat. I don't do to well on a high fat diet. That's a great comparison with a chocolate bar on price! Sorry for not being around or replying until now (it's a long story). is there any other tool you canuse to crack the coconut?
@AyupStuggy10 ай бұрын
I think if I was doing this again, I would use a hammer to bash the coconut against a separate concrete slab, so no damage occurs to either the path, or the rolling pin! My wife wasn't happy with me using the rolling pin to open the coconut! Sorry for not being around or replying until now (it's a long story). I resurrected my channel after 12 years of KZfaq absence!
