Just had a fight for 30mins trying to remove this after a puncture! Spun it, unthreaded it, twisted, tightened. Eventually it came loose and it turns out all I REALLY had to do was push the bloody end?! Thanks so much for the video for the inevitable puncture #2. Also I've totally fitted it back wrong so I'll have to sort that before my cycle home! At least it didn't fall out, but thanks for saving me from total disaster :)

What a great soloution to a problem that didnt exist in the 1st place! So this is not only heavier than a normal thru axle but its more fiddly and by the looks of it puts more wear on the axle and hub when you slide it in and out, yay!

Funny Story: My bike has this system on it's front and I had 0 idea how this through axle worked. So, i needed to fix a flat in the middle of the trail in the evening of a nice summer day. Tried to unscrew the whole thing, what actually worked.... Complete axle flew into 1000 pieces... Ended up walking home having the bike in one hand and the wheel in the other :D

If you press the end in first and then turn it a little bit clockwise it will lock the expanding parts into the retracted position. This makes it easier to install or remove the axle as the expanding parts are less likely to get caught on any edges of the hub or fork legs. Then once in place turn anticlockwise to return to the unlocked expanded position, and then adjust as you showed in the video.

Thanks for the video! I have this same stupid thing on my Norco, although when I went to tighten it it wouldn't spin at all and adjust the tension I put a pair of pliers on it and lately gave it a turn in my hand and then it had a small c clamp that came flying off. When I went to look at it it appeared that there was a small washer and a c-clamp were bent so I gave them a little adjustment on my bench and put them back on I was able to adjust the tensioning nut and clamp the wheel in place!

@michaelspencer7555

And the whole thing is held together by a couple crappy rubber o-rings on the inside and that little "c" clip on the end of the screw on the right side that pops off if you unscrew the gold ring too much. Then you have a nice pile of Jenga pieces and it is really fun trying to hold it all together while you somehow manage to put the clip back on the end of the screw.

Maybe because this was the first Thru axle I've ever owned it didn't seem weird to me. You did miss however that when you push the gold piece in you need to turn it slightly clockwise to lock the wedges in the retracted position so that the axle can slide in and out without the chance of the tabs getting caught part way through. Then turn it counter clockwise to release them again. I think a few users don't realise that this feature exists and think that it is stuck.

This is the worst through axle ever made. Have a Suntour XCR34 fork on a Canyon Stoic 2. Immediately upon using, the c-clip came off. The washer rolled away. So those are gone. The Q-Loc will pop open midway through pullout and get stuck. When it is secured to the fork, it moves around and makes a knocking sound. Literally the worst MTB thing I have ever encountered in 17 years of riding. The bike is dead to me now because it is so difficult to get the front wheel off to take my bike to the park and impossible to get the axle back on, and once it is on, it makes so much noise. Tried to quiet it down by greasing the sides of the fork entry points, but that only holds for 2 rides and then it is knocking around and scratching up the fork again. Canyon tried to offer a credit to an LBS for help, but LBS's refuse to help because none carry or service Suntour forks. They all say "Never buy Suntour, dude. Those axles are trash." Contacted Suntour looking for support from them or a replacement - they refuse to deal with consumers directly and said go back to Canyon. Looking for a replacement through axle. So far, no joy. Nothing fits a Suntour fork except this POS Q-loc. Will never buy a Canyon bike again.

There is at least one alternative thru-axle on Amazon for about $20. I may actually get it, it's got a QR lever on one side, like this does and then a threaded cap on the other side. They come in both 100mm and boost spacing. Because this design sucks. Some tips on this that are not in the video (not that I'm lightning quick at removing it!): there are about a dozen 1/4 turns to the Q-loc, NOT one 1/4 turn. That's probably what throws everyone off the first several times they try it. If it was one 1/4 turn between open and closed, I would not be typing this. Basically, when you want it locked with the wheel in place, you turn it in until the red splayed part touches the housing, and on the other side the QR lever tightens up just like the skewer type. That's of course the easy part. When you want it out (the much harder part), you screw it out until the QR lever can open on the other side. Then...and this is the tricky part...you screw it in with 1/4 turns a few times while pushing that cap on the same side in until the red splayed part shrinks down into the housing. But you are far from done, trust me. You then continue to screw it in 1/4 turns slowly while pushing pretty hard on the cap AND also pulling on the QR lever. I've found that you have to do both, one or the other will simply not get the axle out. You basically have to screw it in, push the end cap with the same hand at the same time, pull the lever on the other side with the other hand, all at the same time. Now that in itself is not the hardest part, believe it or not. The hardest part is timing it just right where that 'perfect' 1/4 turn is that slips the axle out of the housing. It doesn't just pull out normally. You have to slowly turn it in, push/pull hard, and if you get it just right, it slips out. But...there are many times when it starts to slip out about 5-10mm and the red part catches on something inside the housing. Start over. Or...you are almost out and the red part was not completely shrunk down and it catches on the other side of the housing --- it's almost out but not quite. Yes, it's a frigging pain. But I'm good enough to usually do it in a minute or so. Compared with simply twisting out a threaded axle or using a hex lock, this is horrible, obviously. But it's doable. We'll see how annoying it is a month from now. If it still is, I'm plunking down $20 on the Amazon aftermarket thru-axle (if you consider one make sure it has a threaded end cap).

Mine too. Just got it out today. How ? Laid bike down on its side on the lever end. Unscrewed the whole end assembly. Stood bike upright. pulled lever out from other end (attached to shaft with thread on). Sprayed some wd40 in the hole. Left for 30 mins. Then with a small flat blade screw driver and a rubber mallet I 'knocked' the silver cylinder shaft part out. I also had to use pliers to help at the other end. Also, occasionally apply some extra wd40 at both ends during the removal. It took about 15 mins and isn't easy but can be done. Think mine has never been removed after 6+ years so was totally dry and stuck. Once removed, a tiny bit of oil in the fork holes ..... and it slides in and out fine, without at tools ! Hope this helps?

@@stevenwilliamson474 I had to use an angle grinder on the hub next to the bearing to actually get the wheel off mate. The thru axle welded/fused itself inside and we tried absolutely everything to get it it out but to no avail. Halfords Mechanic had no joy either. If I continued to try I would of surely damaged the forks completely and possibly even the front brake disc.(Nightmare) it fused/welded itself inside due to a metal chemical reaction similar to how a car tyre valve cap fuses itself onto the valve thread. Needed to buy a whole new axle/bearing kit at the finish and just about managed not to damage the forks. I'll never ever buy suntour products again or a bike with suntour parts on it.

@@markweatherall7437 Was in talking to my local bike tech today and we got chatting about the Q-Loc axle because the new bike I'm waiting on arriving likely has this style. I'd never seen it before. He says he's had a few bikes in the shop with the same problem as yourselves, the way to stop it is to apply a tiny wee spot of Lithium grease on the axle once a month and you'll never have a problem with it!

I can confirm that it jams right up, during my time in the LBS we had a few Haibikes with these front axles, when dust or anything gets in there, the collar wont detract and allow you to slip the axle out of the fork, major pain in the ass, and there is an O ring that will fail and when that happens the mechanism falls apart...

Absolutely without question, THE best example of taking something simple and using technology and supposed "innovation" to turn a simple process into a nightmare. I am doing everything right, but have spent hours trying to cajole this out. Everything is loose, the unit closes down into the shaft, then resolutely refuses to simply pull through from the quick release end. Utterly and completely awful.

Finally got it out. Local bike hire / repair shop (heroes) had these on most of their hire bikes. Whack with a rubber mallet, then when the nut was flush, a bolt the right diameter to go through the shaft. Bingo. Had started to rust really slightly (hadn't been taken out for 13 months) and needed some muscle.

@@GeorgeFalconer I've just had the same experience, surprised there isn't more complaints about this pointless design on the net. I installed some suntours forks about 9 months ago and was slightly perplexed at complexity of the design but didn't think too much of it. Come today I needed to remove the wheel...jesus...rubber mallet to get it moving? Think lump hammer and a piece of wood to shift the damn thing + lots of wd40 and it still didn't let go until knocked all the way through. Cleaned it (wasn't noteworthy gunked or rusted etc) and greased it up and now works as it should so would suggest anybody installing these grease the damn thing before hand.

I have a solution many will absolutely love. For around $30 USD on Amazon. Completely round thru axle, can be 100 or 110 x 15. The title is super generic: bicycle thru axle. Seller is chain accept. I assume Chinese. I had to put a couple of 2 mm wide spacers to get a tight lever fit but the actual axle inside the dropouts is rock solid, zero issues. And a thousand times better than this piece of crap q-loc. Try to get the axle with an end cap; otherwise you can simply guess on the thread pitch for a 15 mm nut on the end. There are several online without end caps. Remember the axle has to be smooth for all 100 or 110mm, not a hex lock axle. Total length is around 130-140 mm, add 10 to that for boost. Lastly: better to get one too long than too short, you can always add spacers like I did between the lever and dropout.

I think I have a slightly different problem to most people here. I can remove the axle easily enough, but what I can't do is adjust tension. The video makes it looks so simple, but in my case it's like the lever and quick release system the other end are fused together. The axle is from a friend's bike which he gave me yesterday that wasn't being ridden due to health issues. It's a Voodoo Bizango if anyone's interested. The axle (and bike) are a few years old, but have seen little use and everything looks brand new. There's zero corrosion or rust anywhere. But is it possible something has seized inside?
