Thanks for sharing. Might I add the importance of wearing a harness. While trimming branches overhanging my driveway, I had one branch fall and hit the master stop switch on the ground controls. Meanwhile I'm up in the air without a harness (the rental yard offered, but I told them I had my own, which I did, but couldn't find when I got home) Long story short, I considered lowering myself down via my ground rope (yup, had a 3/4 inch rope for the saw, in case it fell), but every time I thought about climbing over the railing without a body harness, discretion proved the better part of valor. I'd called my wife on my cell phone, and she finally came out and reset the stop button. I broke for lunch and found d my harness before going up again.

I'm renting one of these tomorrow. Seriously, thank you for the demonstration, even 8 years ago. Excellent video.

Just rented one today from Home Depot. Used it to take down a 50' oak tree. Worked Great! A little shaky when fully extended but got used to that after about 30 minutes. Fully limbed the tree down to 10' then took the trunk down from the ground. Never took a tree that size down before nor used a boom lift. If you have good common sense and carefully plan each fall you can save yourself a bunch of money. Cost was 300 for 24 hours vs 1200 for service to do the work. Good judgement is the key here.

The very first thing to operate is to unhook the safety lock lever which holds the booms in place while traveling. If you go to raise the boom and it fights you, look for the boom lock lever. Other than that, I used this video to learn the operation. This video is clear and concise, good job.

Unhook from the trailer because it affects the self leveling feature. It will try to pick up the tow vehicle. The trick to be comfortable way up there is to lean against the railings. If you try to keep it from moving using your legs, it will move around a little. There is a turn limiter so you don't twist up the hoses and wires. You figure out which way you want to go and then rotate it to the best starting position.I use mine to raise, lower and service my collection of old farm windmills. Once you get comfortable with it, its extremely handy: trim trees, raise roofing shingles, Christmas lights, aerial pictures, paint the barn, and lots of other stuff. I practiced with a dummy load to see if it would tip. The thing stops you from getting anywhere near the tip point as it senses the loads in the outriggers.

You just saved me lots of frustration. Couldn't figure out how I was having so much trouble backing this stupid thing up, it was engaging that emergency brake. Too bad the rental center didn't bother to mention that LOL

All Aerial Work Lift Platforms use lift locks in the hydraulics. A loss of hydraulic pressure will not allow the lift to come down on its own. A blown hose for example will require a rescue from another lifting device like a fire truck ladder or another lift. Always use a spotter and teach your spotter how to lower you with the ground controls. The spotter helps you to avoid hitting things with the boom. Always wear a fall restraint harness.

ok so what is the max horizontal distance this will reach out from the unit? It this distance the same no matter how you have the platform orientated to the hitch shaft (meaning if your rotate, does it decrease your horizontal reach at all?) Does it automatically not allow you to go out horizontally farther than its rated and risk tip over? Thx!

You need to wear a harness. I've seen people fall out of buckets and it doesn't usually end well. Surprised HD doesn't supply a harness.

Is there a button to drive it into the spot needed or does it need to be towed in the desired spot?

To tilt the bucket in that third "disabled" setting you have to hold the knob in that position and then use the joystick to engage the movement, holding the knob In the position the entire time. I believe it is just a safety feature

Anyways my question is, when up on the platform..what happens if I move the toggle BEFORE hitting the trigger..will I have to reset or..? Yes, unhook the trailer to keep yourself alive. The outriggers are not engineered to carry the additional weight of your truck. So, the rear outriggers are way overloaded. In addition, if the ball released with the boom in the air, the hitch end would launch up and try to launch you to the next block, unless it went over. Scary🙀

Very good job explaining the operation, Rob. I'm wondering how many times you can go up and down and around on that lift before your battery power runs out. I have lots of limbs to trim so I'd be moving it around a lot. Thanks for your time.

Question: do you NEED a wiring harness or any wiring for the boom lift to the truck? From what I'm seeing and reading, the brakes are only engaged like mentioned in the video. The reason I ask is, because apparently home depot doesn't lend these out to people around me. You have to actually go through compact power and THEY deliver the boom to your house. So needing to tow it around is actually not needed. On public roads, that is. You still physically have to tow it to the spots on your yard anyways. And if I'm on my private property, I really don't need the wiring or lights. I just don't know if the brakes are affected/needed to be turned off. Turns out, all 3 of my vehicles have NO trailer hitches. Ok not so bad....I'll go rent one......oh....ok...home depot won't let you use their trucks for this. They lock their hitches and its not for personal use....wtf. Ok off to menards....... Oh, not a single truck they have, have trailer hitches. what in the actual sweet buttery batman. A $200 trailer hitch bolts onto my jeeps back bumper, so I thought I was good to go, until today I just realized, there's no wiring for the trailer for the jeep. This job is turning into a nightmare.

Does anyone know if it has to be fully extended to swing 360 degrees? I just rented one and it would only swing side to side about 45 degrees. I didn't need to go all the way up so I didn't try that.

By "unsettling" do you mean you had to change your underwear?

You always want to disconnect from your vehicle...you will bend the tongue and put excess weight on the back outriggers and when you get in the bucket the weight goes back on your vehicle and the rear outriggers lift up and it will shut the unit down, and if that happens you are screwed, unless you have someone on the ground to switch it back over and relevel the outriggers...been on many service calls for units not working and this always seems to be the problem...

Always check ground conditions, I operate a dry run to make sure our riggers aren't sinking slowly. Maybe over kill better safe than sorry

mate ,you should have a harrness on , and there should be dunnage under those outrigger plates , the hire company should be shot for letting you use that without harness.
