I've got the very same machine. I bought it because the brand new Troy Built I had was a POShit. (Sold it after one year!) Prior to the Yard Machine, I had a Murray. That old boy lasted me over 30 years!!! I like the YM, but the Murray was superior in several ways. First, it had a "granny gear" which allowed me to creep around obstacles, rather than riding the brake to slow down. Second, the mower deck could be raised higher than YM. (Even at setting 5, YM is too low for some areas. I can only assume that setting 1 is for post hole digging!!) Third, the Murray's intake chute was clear plastic, so I could see if it was getting plugged. Fourth, Murray's boot-chute-bagger assembly was SO easy to detach and clean then reattach. The boot on YM (like the Troy Built) is CRAP! It falls off due to vibration or bumps and can fall into the running blades! (Whoever designed this is a complete IDIOT!!) I had to drill holes and literally BOLT the boot to the mower deck. Fifth, YM can't handle thick grass and clover and must be stopped and "unclogged" frequently. (I miss my Murray!!!)

When you turn the engine off , do NOT push the throttle up to the choke position to kill the engine , but rather reduce the engine speed by moving the throttle lever to the slow idle position and let the engine idle for at least several seconds , then you can turn the ignition switch to the off position !! Also the deck height adjusting lever , or more commonly known as the cutting height adjustment does NOT make the blades turn on , it only raises or lowers the deck , the lever closest to the seat is the manual blade engagement lever that tightens the blade drive belt up so it can drive the blades !

Helpful comment section this.... Not having used anything but a hydrostatic mower, do I have to select a gear whilst machine stationary, or can I shift gears whilst moving? Just got an old mower similar to this, too busy fixing push mowers to delve further, but want to give this a good service, oil /gas change, ect. Keen to pick up as many good habits as I can, so will be warming up on low revs, and cooling down, before knocking off with KEY (I must get another key, as it's had it's day) and not using choke to cut off, as I have experienced cleaning carbs enough to be cautious. Heard that it's a good idea to fit a fuel shut off valve, so one can run slightly dry for some duration of time, on the last mow of the season... Is this a good idea, or is that just good for the carb but bad for the engine? Any other bad habits one can do, I intend to put as little strain on this machine, as it's got it's work cut out for it. Any good lawnmower channels that would be worth a watch? Have watched one too many small engine saloons this week, fixing B&S carbs and plenty of other sorts of mower troubleshooting. Thanks

Why does our Yard Machine ride on mower stall when it gets hot , cool off about 5 to 10 minutes and it will start again . We have put a new plug i n , a new gas filter and a new coil , mower still stalls after a short time mowing . Please help

The rider I have the same look but the reverse gear is on the plate between the seat and wheel and the speed shiftier is to the right.The deck lever is to the right of the wheel coming through the side plate for the feet.Also I have a separate choke and throttle.My problem with it is that the parking break does not work.The safety switch works but the brakes won't engage when I set it to park.

you forgot to check the oil always do this before starting a riding mower and flood your engine when you shut it off causes a back fire and your engine wont last as long always idle it down

Thank you. I just recently bought a used one model RL629 got it for a good price i believe it’s was overhauled it looks beautiful and shiny. All of it on bottom is greased near tire controls. I have one question when I place in reverse with blade running it stalls is this normal or not.

I much prefer a Hydrostatic transmission. Not fond of the mower going as soon as you let off the brake.

You forgot to mention the cup holder! :^D I have some nitpicks: Your seat shouldn't slide back and forth on its own and in fact some bolts might be missing. As it is, it is dangerous as it could cause injury or an accident if it suddenly slid forward or backward. Select the position that is most comfortable and tighten it up. The seat springs are nothing more than springs for shock absorption. There is however a dedicated 'dead man' switch connected to the seat where it hinges but you're correct in theory -- an empty seat kills the mower's engine. The lever to the immediate right does not "drop the blades"; that is the blade engagement lever which engages the belt drive and spins the blades. The lever to the far right adjusts ("drops") the blades/deck height and its purpose is not to avoid hitting stumps or other debris--it is simply a preference option as to how high or how low the grass is cut. You got them both mixed up. Gas tank or gas can? On vehicles the on-board gas container is usually called a gas tank. The gas can is what you fill the tank with but I'm just arguing semantics and that is probably your preferred slang. Words and their meanings DO matter though, especially to noobs so I want your viewers to understand. I laughed when you said didn't want your fan blade engaged when going across gravel. :^D To shut off the engine, nothing more need be done than to turn the key to OFF. The choke is used only for starting but your way works okay I guess, except that you're racing the engine right at shut off. In fact after cutting the grass, it would be best if the engine was allowed to cool down on low idle prior to shutdown. Maximum RPM, for me, is strictly for running the blades and at that time when you really need the extra power... FYI: I just treat my riding mower like a WWII fighter plane; A cold engine is started and allowed to warm up at low to medium speeds before a load is placed on it and prior to high RPM. Then I mow at full 'combat' speed. When finished, I bring it in back to the 'runway', land and let it idle for a time before shutdown.
