I've never really looked at font book a part from when I install them initially but this is really useful to do! Definitely something I'll need to look at getting sorted as I know the ones I've downloaded live all over my folders so at least this keeps them all together in the one place and properly organised!

I've put probably 5 hours into doing this for my entire font collection, and I just recently realized that I'm going to have to put this down as like a "do while flying w/o internet" sort of to-do list.

Thanks for this video. As a Mac user there are so many things about it that I find by trial and error. However, since I'm gearing up for more book work (ghostwrite, compile, edit, layout, and cover creation) I needed to understand Font Book more, so thanks for this. Great. You present the subject matter in a very easy and focused manner... something that a lot of people on KZfaq don't do very well.

I remember using something like this a few years ago & never took the time to really learn how to use it. Because of you, I have re-installed it & use it every time I work on a new design. It would be really great if someone would incorporate this into Photoshop as a plugin, so you could organize the fonts you have in different categories, while using Photoshop. Maybe some "smarter-than-me" plugin maker will see this and do it! ;) Thanks for all you do!

I was just saying to myself that I needed to up my font organization game but it urns our I already use the same tools in the same way as you do! Thanks for the affirmation. 😁 I also have "brand" folders for each of my clients or each of my own ventures and an "incoming" folder for fonts I haven't sorted yet.

Wow. I've actually never thought about making my own folders in Font Book. I'm totally going to do that now. I always end up having to scroll through a million fonts to find the one I'm looking for. Although, when I design web projects I usually have my favorites synced from typekit anyway. But for other projects this will be super helpful!

yeah it's a shame font book only shows installed fonts, not synced ones as it's be nice to have everything in the same place!

How did you get started...meaning like how did you originally promote your self to get your first job or clients? and do you do any email marketing?

+ItsJustJoeTV it was just through connections id made/people I knew that I got my first clients! And still to this day word of mouth or meeting people is how ive gotten all my freelance jobs. As for my first full time design job tho I just applied for one I saw advertised. I do use email but not very effectively at the moment!

Another Great Vid! Can you use google fonts for print projects and logos? ie corporate logos that might be trademarked and things that might be sold on tshirts etc? and if you do, do you need to attribute them? maybe you could do a vid about how you generally go about designing branding?

I think it would be really helpful to discuss where and how you organise your fonts on your HD. Also, when importing into FontBook, does it create duplicate versions of the font files elsewhere on the computer?

i am using a font and it puts the dingbats first so when i try and use it in ms word it doesn’t work. how do i change the order in fonts so that the regular version goes first

Great idea! I should start doing that as well. What I do is I save my fonts into my external hard drive after I download them on to my computer. What do you do with those PDF or READ ME or Licence TEXT that they come with the fonts? Do you save them as well?

Kevin Plays Guitar this is probably bad but I usually delete the PDF/specimens of well known fonts and sometimes I just keep them in their respective folders on external hardrive. I personally don’t need them because I’m using the fonts for personal use and not commercially.

yep that's best to do! In case you get a new computer and need to install your fonts on that. (i was going to mention that in this video but it was alredy getting long, so I'm glad you asked!)

I can see the use of having them organized outside of the applications, but what I'd really like is consistent, robust, and customizable sorting options WITHIN the adobe products themselves. I noticed that the latest version of Illustrator does have some sorting options but I wish there were more options and that you could customize the tags or whatever it is that they use to sort out what sort of font a particular font is. Do you know of any 3rd party plugins that can do this sort of thing and actually make it easier to scroll through a narrower font "genre" within the Adobe apps, like InDesign in particular?

I knew there was a way to organize fonts I've just never gotten around to it. Cool to see so,some actually does. Does adobes typekit have organizing functionality? Never spent enough time in there to know I guess. Really wish there was a more intuitive system directly in photoshop!

Great vid. Do these work with the Adobe suite as when you select a font in FontBook it is updated of auto selected in the program being used?

Font Book is a font manager so it's a way of installing, viewing and organising fonts. you still have to select the font in the program unfortunately!

That would be cool!! Fontbook is just built in to Mac OS so there won’t be a version of exactly this for Windows, but just research font managers and see what other windows users might recommend!

Great tutorial. I've watched several & this is by far the best & clearest! Thank you. Two questions: 1. Can you explain the location of the User Folder / where to put my downloaded fonts? 2: I'm setting up two computers - is there a way to copy/migrate the folders I've set up to a second computer so they're the same? -- Many thanks!

I would advise you to save all your fonts in a folder within your document system after you install them so you can easily install them on new computers in the future. I’m not aware of a way to easily transport fonts and folders to a new machine unless you clone the old Mac when you set up a new one. That doesn’t mean it’s not possible tho! I just haven’t looked into it

Also I would recommend to copy the fonts from your font library and migrate them to a separate folder in your external hard drive just in case

I've been meaning to do this for some time...I've been relying on the filters in the illustrator drop down box, but that doesn't give you a nice clear picture of the font like font book

Matt Duncan there as far as I know, there is no such way to organize fonts within photoshop. You’d have to use a font organizer before hand and then find the fonts manually inside your design software.

Hi Cahrli, Thanks it was helpful. But I still have a ton of questions... Some fonts seem to come with different adobe apps. I feel lost as I look online to see if I have the licence for them or not. Some may be for sale, but I don't recall downloading them. Some It seams come with a specific app as I find them only there.. Many more questions. Please help :)

are you talking about Typekit perhaps? Which is part of adobe cloud? If so, you have the right to use fonts installed through typekit :)

+Lewi Nikijuluw font book comes preinstalled on Apple computers :) and you should check out my vlogs about moving to London from a few years ago! They should help answer a lot of questions about moving :)

a lot. haha. It basically syncs all google fonts and Typekit fonts to your computer and automatically filters your fonts into categories such as serif, san-serif, slab, script, weight etc. Maybe you could make a video about it. Its definitely a tool alot designers would find useful.

Oh dear - I've so wanted to do this for years. But - I can't see how to install FONT BOOK on my Windows PC. I've been googling it, but no luck so far. It just asks me "Are you using a Windows ARM based device?" Anyone have any ideas? I have hundreds of fonts - but no option down the left hand side for organising them as shown in your video. HELP SOMEONE PLEASE!! I do have an Apple password and I Phone - but would like it on my desktop.

Informative, but could have shown HOW a user accesses the fonts when using Text in Adobe. Does the font show up in the drop down TEXT menu in Photoshop..?

A Windows alternative would be nexusfont - www.xiles.net/ It's basically the same as Font Book, it just has a bit more functionality - you can type out your text to see how it will look with each font, rather than looking at the default characters :)

Did you try it? Just type in the Font Preview in Font Book to see whatever you want. That text will then persist when you change fonts. Great for logo shortlists! Boost the font size and take quick screen snaps of the preview with the Font name. The regular print option only prints the standard alphabetic sample preview, not your sample text but is good for making a pdf sample book of your fonts.

No it will not appear "organized" in any program you use

@@mattduncan5500 You can use Font book to search for the font you want. You can type in demo text to see how it looks. Then just pick it in the program you are using.

omg my gosh that's so interesting you think that! I'm actually INFJ! (Introverted Sensing with Extraverted Feeling) I think people assume that introverts can't be confident, so many people assume I'm an extrovert because I'm a friendly person on and off camera, but really it's all about where you get your energy from, and I totally thrive off having the time and space to be in my own thoughts. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy social situations, but it just means they exhaust me so I have to recharge! :)

You can be introverted, however if you attach yourself to a ROLE and specific environment you can then play out that role VERY WELL ...and CHARLIES does a fantastic job....*****

CharliMarieTV I have the same thing that people assume I must be extroverted. It's hard work having to explain that I want to be on my own to recharge but nothing is wrong! (INFP btw)

How expensive is collecting fonts ? I imagine it can become very expensive practice if ur concerned about producing Designs that are legal

everyone should be concerned about producing legal designs! it depends what fonts you collect i suppose :) I like buying fonts from indie font designers below the $20 price tag.

i mean, the software is called FontBook though, and technically you are organising fonts too since fonts are within typefaces!

That is very true. I think it's just a bit of a shame when the term gets misused. As a graphic designer it feels important to me to use the terms correctly. I don't really get purposefully calling something by its incorrect name :-)

People still download fonts? Usually I just use Google Fonts, unless it's like a branding font then I would use them.

I work as a full stack developer, although I much prefer the development side to things, I still have much to learn for the design aspects! Also, great work on your videos, loving them!

+StangeBeing The next W10 update is specifically called the 'Creators' update, I'd be really surprised if there wasn't something to help with this, you can look at all fonts in a folder but you can't organise them.

+PAdenmark agreed! It shows that Apple is more focussed on creatives than Microsoft. Tho it will be interesting to see the creators update to Windows 10!
