Jim, I hope you see this. No need to "remember" which way to turn the wheel. All you need to do if the trailer has gone "offline" (lol) is to look in the side mirrors. You turn the wheel towards the mirror you see the tail end of the trailer in.

@@kimvanlandingham4168thank you for that info. I just bought a 14ft flat trailer (for hauling compost, fencing, lawn mower etc). I haven't pulled a trailer in over 20 years and I am relearning to maneuver a trailer.

When my mom died, I wanted the ancestral Junk drawer. When she remodeled her house, she took the junk drawer from the old kitchen, and moved it into one of the new cabinets. Just took that drawer and put it in a shelf. When I got it, I did the same thing. It wasn't organized, but it had so much important useful stuff in it!

I grew up in a very loving family of 13. Organization was part of survival. It also contributed to harmony in the home. I sit here as a widow and retired banker at age 73 watching you with my day planner and notebook close by on my coffee table. Some habits die hard. 😉Very much enjoyed this video. 👍🏼

When I was in school, we were taught anything but. That was intentional. My greatest regret is not dropping out at 15 and going straight to the library instead. I started having that regret the last week of senior year, when two teachers explained that I could've taken my GED at 16 and immediately started community college courses.

About five decades ago, my dad taught me a fairly simple way to steer a backing trailer the way you want it to go. Instead of placing your hands at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel, use your dominant driving hand to grab the center BOTTOM of the steering wheel. Now, to make the trailer go to the right while backing, move your driving hand to the right. Same goes for moving it to the left. Putting your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel automatically reverses the resulting direction of the trailer, so it goes the way you want it to without thinking about it. Your mutual enjoyment of doing things together is engaging, so fun to watch! Thank you. (PS to Pam, I also have about 75,000 emails built up…)

I was also taught to hold the steering wheel at the bottom. Always has worked and never have to think about it. Works great for backing up a boat down the dock. I have made a lot of of people drop their jaws in awe. 🤣

As a truck driver I can agree with this. Also don’t over steer. Very small adjustments. Especially with small trailers & boats. Otherwise you’ll easily jackknife.

Good timing. And like you both I planned to move. My whole house was packed except the essential things I needed until my home sold. With prayer I found that right now I am to stay where I am. So I won't get overwhelm with things lying everywhere, every week day I open two packed boxes. And on the Saturdays' I open four pack boxes. I put everything away that I love and need and the rest goes to charity.

Jim and I have a similar experience with our military fathers, "do as I say' My father did give me discipline which served me well all of my life. I learned from others as well. I also was a factory worker who got paid by 'piece work' so I developed techniques that got the work out and carried this attitude over to my home to save time. Time was the factor to 'getting organized'. I was working, raising a child, building a home, I was forced to get organized. Yes, I used a list, It is amazing how much more work can get done with a list.

My husband learned to back up a trailer by placing your hand on the bottom center of the steering wheel and turn the wheel ( keeping your hand and not moving your hand) the way you want to go. Keeping your hand on the bottom and if you want to go right, turn your hand to the right.

I am on Stratera now, in my 60s. As a child learning and projects etc were easy for me. As an adult I can not complete one project. Interruptions throw me completely off and I have a hard time getting back to it. But for 28yrs as a nurse I had no problems concentrating and getting my work done. Even double and triple checking the medications I pulled up for patients. It is very frustrating and overwhelming now to not be on task and have projects incomplete at home. The Stratera helps (I requested a non-narcotic medication)

Thank you so much for taking the time to make this. You are both so amazing. Such a generous and perfectly delivered piece of work. I am trying my best to be more organised and one of the things that has always pulled me back was trying to be perfect in everything that I do. I discovered that striving for perfection is good but that it has hindered me so badly in my work to the point that I wasn’t being very productive at all. I resonated with quite a bit of the things that you mentioned, even the smaller things like getting into the habit of making the bed every morning. I am so thankful for this video.

I LOVE that you experiment! My husband and I enjoy watching as you come up with answers! It’s helped us to learn and make decisions for our household. I, too, MUST have a decluttered kitchen to function. When I was studying for my BSN degree, I had to have order to my immediate environment in order for my study time. If my counters are cluttered in the kitchen, I can’t cook until everything is cleaned up and in its place. My husband evidently has a mission to dirty every knife, pot, and dish while cooking and has no problem working over the mess! Did I mention he doesn’t do dishes!??? Needless to say, I stay out of the room until the dust settles! He’s a pretty nice guy and handy to have around….he’s 6’7 and knows how to fix things so, guess I’ll keep him!😂😂😂

Pam, I’m in my 60’s and still working on these skills. I’d love to have my pantry as organized as yours is… likewise for the junk drawers. It is truly a gift to be a natural organizer. My ADD brain is all over the place. I love things to be organized, but struggle with getting them there. I have not given up, though. A big part is letting go of doing it the ‘right way’ and just finding what works.

Yup…I’m one of those organically Natural organizers …. … not sure I could teach anyone how to do it as I don’t think twice about it.. 🤷🏼‍♀️ ….it’s not even goal oriented…it’s just who I am and how I roll…although I can navigate through it, I’m not comfortable in chaos but challenged by it just the same and I’m continuously sorting and organizing along the way… it’s almost like a game to me lol… I love to multitask and see how many balls I can keep in the air 😉…. I don’t analyze things as a whole..I just do as I go with the flow… I may be organized but I’m not anal about it. 😐

Great topic. I typically be myself as fairly organized and, like you, when shut upon a task, I tend to be hyper focused on it until it is as complete as I can make it. However, I have been struggling to apply these principles, especially habit building, at the big picture scale , particularly relating to how to turn many of these preparedness activities into a regular lifestyle. Having the time to do things like make freshly baked bread or can can or get out of the garden. Seems to be more of a treat because my everyday life is so busy. And on the occasions when I can try to dedicate a big block of time to getting something done, my wife sometimes gets mad about me dedicating some free time to these things It would be interesting to see these principles, especially habit building for a preparedness mindset, applied on A real world lifestyle, especially for those of us who work a typical 9:00 to 5:00 job with two kiddos at home, and still having the time to dedicate to family and relaxation

In reference to backing a trailer and this comes from backing my boat trailer. I use my side mirrors on the vehicle for one and I have found that I turn the steering wheel toward the tire that I want to turn. So I don't have to look over my shoulder I just look in my side mirrors and the tire that I want to turn I turn the steering wheel toward that tire basically that side of the trailer.

But, my kitchen pantry, - grab and close the door 😆. You just inspired me to get it done. But, this time, in order-ish.

This was a very good step by step how to...but (referring to myself)...there is an emotional and mental component to accomplishing organization. My mother was a bit of a hoarder and you don't throw things out because "someday, you or someone may needed it". I lived in hidden piles of clutter of stuff in extra rooms, closets, and storage units. Trying to make a decision on what to save, throw, donate, or preserve to pass down causes extreme anxiety and possibly a panic attack. My personality is that of a severe minimalist, but I live in clutter. My strong ADD issues affect the mental component, my mother-in-my-head dictates the emotional component. Any ideas on how to conquer these issues? I can't be the only one.

I went through the same thing after our kitchen remodel. We gutted the whole thing and even removed a wall. Our pantry, that was outside of our remodel. It became a huge mess. I only have 4 drawers now so I had to downsize the junk in my drawers. Gave lots of stuff away!

You and Jim are a hoot together. 😅 A suggestion on backing up a trailer ... put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel. The trailer will turn in the same direction as your hand. Also, when we camp with our longer trailer, we use two-way radios, especially when it's getting dark. 😊 Tell Pam that I wish my pantry looked as nice as her disorganized one 😅 Time to put that chore on my to-do list. Guilt by association. ❤

This interesting! I just got in from trying to clean and organize one of my sheds. I had to move fast so things were thrown into boxes by many friends so I have no idea what is in what box. We put all that into the shed and after barely moving in I moved again so more boxes then surgeries and I have been procrastinating getting all that sorted. Many things have been replaced. I just worked till I wore out and will attack it again tomorrow. That is hard because organizing around such disorganization it tough! I got part of the floor clear so one step in the right direction! This is a job that no one else can do. Darn!!!

It is great to have friends come over and help, but even when you label and number each of the boxes, some items get misplaced and looking for specific items can be frustrating. We are still unpacking from our planned move last summer that we cancelled). Jim

@@RoseRedHomestead My daughter said she is still unpacking and she moved long before I did. But in the military it is a much more organized move. Mine was far from organized. We will get there though!

If you haven't already heard it, I think you both would really get a kick out of the song "The Kitchen Junk Drawer" by singer-songwriter Michael Longcor. Very cute song! A video of him playing his guitar and performing it is available free on YT. 🙂

You left the second R out of the appropriately on number 6. Oops sorry. I spent too many years of proofreading at a local newspaper. Love the video. Great strategies for organizing.

Thank you for being so observant. We did not see it until after the fact as was pointed out to us by others. We will have to do a fine-tooth comb read of each white-board writing before each course presentation. Thanks for watching our channel. Jim

I love your video's and am in the midst of cleaning out a middle room. Funny in a 1930 house closet space is non existent, but I bought for the Moldings, floors and charm. Picture a Main Bedroom with no closets and on the entire 1st floor 1 closet. I made the downstairs closet into a pantry over the winter, but I will watch this video as Middle room has 2 closets but I need space. Thank you

I used to have nice clean house until I met my future husband who is a hoarder and has a lot of anxiety in an uncluttered space, so he promptly started surrounding himself with trash that it frustrated me to no end. I started trying to pick his mess which only increased anxiety for both of us. I stopped picking up after him, now our house is a mess because he can't let go of old car parts that he no longer has the car to put them on. He had them in a storage unit until he got laid off. So he moved the junk into my den and now I can barely get into the room to use my computer.

I'm so sorry to hear.😢 Have you considered making one space that is 'his', and he can fill, and having a space that is 'yours'. Each person can overfill or keep clear their own designated space? It is hard, but sometimes, we must have conversations with loved ones to establish boundaries. I hope you can find a solution.

Fir true hoarders, designating their own space is simply impossible. Working through the issues that cause the hoarding behavior is the first step.

My hubby is a disaster at organization. It has driven me crazy for 50 years! I need things organized and tidy. It started a month after the honeymoon. I liked my fridge organized. He announced to me that he had to keep his fridge at home neat to please his mother, and he had no intention of following that model in his own home. That gives you an idea of how these 50 years of marriage has progressed. What is needed is a great sense of humor. It has kept me sane all these years. I wouldn’t trade him for the tidiest, most organized man on the planet, even if it was George Clooney. 😉
