That is a cracking idea. Thanks. The amount of cables I have went through as a musician over the last 35 years is no one's business. Simple effective. Love it.

Hi Jake, we use hose reels. They come with a floor stand and winding handle, and make spooling cables out or pulling cables in even easier. Same idea in other respects, but a floor stand and winding handle just add so much extra convenience.

Nice. We would do that but we are limited on flight case space

We use spools for our longer cables from sound desk to stage rack etc and it makes things so easy. Never thought of using them for shorter lengths which may help when someone decides to be helpful and dump a tangled mess into the box...

Nice! We used to do that at my old church but we didn't have labels. It was fun to use a cable that's way too long only to find the next cable on the spool as the length you needed and you switched it out only to find that it didn't work. Oh ... the good old days. 🤪

Over under method. Learn how to teach it. It takes me 2mins to teach it somebody. Then pinpoint important rules (like each connector has to stay on each side when wrapped so it doesn't go through the coil and make knots etc...) Never had an issue with that method both in our church and at the A/V company I work for.

Although this looks like a good concept I’m skeptical about how much time it’s actually saving. Does the cost of buying the reels offset the simple “coiling by hand” (stacking coils or over-under) so much that they are worth buying?

Especially compared to longevity and replacing cables after they've become unserved by spooling them.

@@WhaleTPK what do you mean unserved?
@WhaleTPK
@WhaleTPK 3 жыл бұрын
@@RobertBardwell served is a type of shielding, where the copper shield is wrapped around the conductors. Unserved would then mean that it's become unwound, leaving gaps and kinks in your shielding.

Doesn't this coil/twist the cables? (i.e. like the "elbow' method)
@Gaget01Stuff
@Gaget01Stuff 4 жыл бұрын
Not if they're fed on properly. In the same way, it's possible to do the "elbow" method without twisting the cables, however the nature of the spool means that you just need to attach one end of the cable so it's bend direction matches the spool's and then turn the spool whilst feeding the cable on. It's only a mildly faster process than "air wrapping" them by hand, but it shines when it comes to organisation.
@kevinmcd112
@kevinmcd112 4 жыл бұрын
Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER roll cables over your elbow. It ruins the cables. If someone on my team rolls cables around his elbow, he's immediately fired! It's unacceptable! Cables are expensive and wrapping them around your elbow is stupid and lazy.
@Gaget01Stuff
@Gaget01Stuff 4 жыл бұрын
@@kevinmcd112 sorry if it was unclear, I definitely was NOT ENCOURAGING ANYONE TO WRAP CABLES ROUND THEIR ELBOWS. Just merely suggesting that it's theoretically possible to "air wrap" a cable that just happens to have your forearm in the middle of it
@kevinmcd112

@@Gaget01Stuff It's still a bad idea because it's lazy and encourages bad habits.

This method does wear the cables down faster compared to the over-under method. But it's a give and take. I've seen larger churches that only have one tech staff member, use this method as well because the XLRs they buy have a lifetime warranty and if it stops working then they just take it to their dealer and get new ones. It saves them time and they're fine with it. But I still consider the pro or professional way to hand coil the cable using the over-under method. Like I said, it all just depends.

Please just learn the over under method. This is very time consuming and inefficient. Waiting for someone to unravel a 50' cable so you can get one is waiting time.
