Let’s face it, organizing your papers, and paperwork organization isn’t usually easy. However, I found the best and easiest paper filing system that is not expensive and actually works! This file system is self cleaning and it tells you how to file so it takes the guesswork out! It’s called Freedom Filers, it’s brilliant and really helped me for what I struggled with most when it came to paper organizing, I didn’t know what to keep, get rid of, or how to categorize certain things. I love that it’s labeled in a way that keeps working year after year and you don’t end up with labeled files that need to be renamed because of change!

My local walmart had 2 drawer filing cabinets for $35. Cheaper than most other places including Amazon at the time of writing. I bought it and it's actually better than expected for the price.

Helpful Hint: Files have 3 master categories: Archival, Historic, and Action / Active Items. Files should be placed from newest to oldest, so that the newest file is on the top; there are hanging file bars that allows the cabinets to have files oriented from front to back (as opposed from the left to right side). Active Items should not be placed in a hanging file folder cabinet or storage box, but should be in your “inbox” at or near your desk (or workspace). This includes people you must follow up with, leads, business inspiration, and things that you would categorize as active (not passive) avenues to generate income.

Do you put the stickers on the outside of the hanging file folder tab or do you open the tab and place the sticky label inside the tab? This is a great informative video!

I'm glad this was informative! I open the tabs and put the label inside, however the label isn't sticky with the freedom filers. If you make your own labels and it's sticky I would put it on the outside. I hope that helps!

Also there's no need to keep a copy of your water bills nowadays, everything is available online. There's actually very few papers worth keeping but for those, this system seems to work well.

I see you used the 1/5 tab system. is that if you're not using 1/3 tab manilla folders? trying to figure out which system to buy thx

Exactly, I'm not using 1/3, but either are great, and you can't go wrong! I picked the 1/5 because I just liked the way they look. The 1/5 is a bit smaller, and 1/3 is a bit larger, so I think it's about what you ascetically prefer!

I got confused in the beginning , you put the current year in the back then you put the year in the front and then you get rid of papers , what if you want them ?

Hi, where do keep bank account information? do you keep letters, cheque book etc separate from statements which would be in monthly green tabs?

S x - Bank account things go in different places. In the orange section there are tabs for accounts, and this is where you might put the agreement when you open your account (this really does come in handy sometimes), And any updates to your account. When the updates change, you remove the old one and replace it with the new one. If for some reason you change your bank, then you reuse the folder with the new bag. If you label the folder with letters that stand for your name or maybe HH for household account, S for savings account, etc., you never have to change the folder label. Things like checks are sort of like supplies and sort of like valuables. Where ever you keep them, they should be somewhere that can be locked. You can custom create a label, whether orange, red or gray for supplies “Checks” or “Valuables, Checks.” You could also consider bank accounts as permanent items and keep the original agreement and the checks in your read per minute section, and simply keep the banking updates in your orange section. All you would need to do is create custom red labels, which is so easy to do.

The actual checkbook that you use currently… I keep those in half-depth hanging pockets at the front of my locked files. It’s more convenient that way. A box bottom hanging pocket is nice for extra checks. If you get a letter from the bank that is just an update that gets updated periodically, that goes in the orange section. If it is simply a notification that has no lasting value, it can go in your green monthly folders to be purged at a later time. I get notifications of safe deposit charges coming up. I don’t actually need to keep that, so I trash it or I put it into the green monthly file. Because I have several bank accounts though, are use green folders but I keep all of the statements for each account in their own folder. Then I purge it after a couple years. The notification that I have already been charged for my safe deposit box goes into my tax deduction file. I love the system because I don’t end up with terms of useless banking stuff mixed in with the really important stuff. Because I keep all of my banking things in the orange section, I subdivide the folder a bit-I put a fat binder clip around original paperwork, original agreements for the bank account and for the debit card. The items that are updated every month or every year or so, those are loose in the folder.

Can you please do me a huge favor and list where you got your sheet protectors? I ordered some clear plastic envelopes, because that's what I thought that you had, but they're way too big to put in my file cabinet. I think she protectors would be perfect. I just don't want to order anything more without knowing that they'll actually really do the job. Thank you so much!!! 😊

I have a small notebook with business cards in it, but we don’t have a certain plumber or landscapers. Honestly, if you have landscapers, you are making plenty more $$ than we are. Not that I’m jealous, just thinking you are going to have more files than I am, and I’m honestly trying to relate, but not sure if I will. I’ve listened to this and watched it more than once, maybe it will sink in this hard head. I don’t like the idea a two years worth of months. I like the months, but I don’t see a need to keep it all another year. Why not empty them out when you come to the month?

I dont want to sound stupid but why would you need paperwork if there's an hurricane? And what type of things do you keep in those 2 tabs that you would keep in the hurricane situation? Loved the video! :)

Sunflower Studies Birth Certificates, Social Security Cards, Passports, All your insurance information is a must, all your mortgage paperwork’s is a must, stuff like that. Can you imagine loosing everything and not having any of your insurance information and mortgage paperwork? There is important info in those papers that they will need when you make a claim, because making a claim isn’t easy.

This is old school. Show us the best way *digitally* and maybe even incorporating tags, YAML, and RegEx or some other digital tool...oh, and scanning...maybe OCR. Papers collect dust and hide bugs, can be stolen or burned...I can't seem to find a great digital way for the average household.

I only use the freedom files, I don't have any dividers in them if that's what you mean.
