this is such a beautiful episode. I'm moved by so many of the words you guys shared in this one. Not only is this topic rarely talked about, but also I'm more impressed about how you and your dad speak in a way that is so compassionate, so kind and so full of inner peace, even in topics like mortality and the inevitable ending. When I speak, I notice I will project my inner darkness and pessimism through my tone, and that's depressing. I wish I could have that inner peace and warm place like you guys, but I guess that's not teachable at all.

Truly loved this topic. It has opened up an area of interest that l have long forgotten . You have put this topic existentialism into an easy way for me to further explore. I feel more at ease in my acceptance of death when looking at it in a larger picture. I feel so calm listening to to Rick’s comments on this issue . Thank you

I love what you shared, Dr. Hanson, about your own ideation and how you had to make a choice. At age 53, I am at a place where I want to make a new kind of choice as to why. This is an invaluable episode.

This father son duo has helped me so much in this past few days than any of my therapist has in years. Thank you so so so much. Especially how Rick put it together about how he decided to be in with his life and take the good and the bad and not have second thought about wanting to live really hit me in the right spot ❤️❤️ thank you so much again. You guys are doing a great job

Forrest, your Dad mentioned at 29.34 about putting resources to help people who might be suicidal in the show notes. It might be useful to put something at the end of the show description and breakdown above. Great discussion - thank you both.

I'd be really curious to learn more about how to know if a therapist, therapy in general, or a type of therapy is working for me? What are the criteria I could look at to measure this, and what questions can I ask myself, and ask my therapist to know? And if we get off track, what questions can I ask my therapist to make sure we're moving towards the same goal, and that we're holding each. other accountable to that goal? What are the criteria around when to leave a therapist or just look for a new type of treatment?

Hey there, these are great questions. We addressed some of them in a few episodes we did in 2019 dedicated to getting the most out of therapy. That's before we were on KZfaq. They're titled "How to Start Therapy" and "How to Get the Most Out of Therapy." You can find them on most any podcast player.

You spent 60 seconds mentioning and dismissing anyone who gets caught up in that "morbid preoccupation". Calling it "selfing" doesn't do anything but make me feel worse about being trapped in a profoundly hopeless place that I don't want to be in but haven't ever been able to find my way out of

I agree. There isn't even a great analysis on how morbid preoccupation is selfing. Made any progress on your crisis?

Do you believe in reincarnation? We are reincarnated souls …. existence in this life gives me peace in remembering I have been here so many times!

Why the mandatory thinking of “you have to live to the fullest”?? Nooo, come on. This is why people are seeing life so pointless. Bc whe ask to much to this life, and just BEING, SHOULD BE ENOUGH to us!
