I absolutely love this. I also grew up playing in orchestras, and since have played in bands. I have no problem playing in an ensemble, in front of crowds, but put me by myself, or in an intimate setting, I freeze right up. Great advice, thank you for this! I will say, one thing that's helped me is realizing that when I'm watching any kind of live performance, I'm never judging the musicians. Nor is anyone else. They're there to enjoy the music. I've always found that people are very supportive and want to see you succeed. I truly am my worst enemy, not anyone else 🤷♂️

Thanks for this video. I struggle a lot with performance anxiety even in lessons with my teacher. I also left violin playing after I studied music at University level because I thought I wasn't good enough but I've picked up my violin again and now getting my advanced grades before I go back to study.

Not only do you make money, but the fact that no ones paying attention to you specifically really helped me to get comfortable with performance in general. @@theshantiduo8869 I am glad that I am returning to my gift myself. It has never felt this good ever since I left. For performances I used to do weddings and small concerts. That was really it for me. I never actually tried busking before and I am not sure how much it is allowed in the city where I stay but that is an idea to try but now with the situation we're all in it is a bit difficult working around COVID-19. I should try prepare some pieces to play and just do a live video on Facebook or KZfaq some time. Though I need some kind of back track to make it more round and full or even arrange with a pianist to accompany me when I go live. I think playing live for audiences through a digital medium will help though it won't feel the same as when there are people directly in front of me receiving the music as they would when in person.

Don't quit! The way I handle mistakes now now is to make light of it and often people appreciate when you make a mistake as it shows you are human. Often no one is as harsh and unforgiving as our own inner critic

Practise the shifting exercises in the book by Basil Althaus called "7 Positions of the Violin" and breath deeply whilst you do it. Perhaps check out my video on Left Thumb Position too as this will help you understand how not to grip the neck

Thank you for this topic. I am in year 2 of playing violin, and I am an HSP/empath. I had my first recital today, and felt triggered in many ways. Maybe I stopped breathing. My hand started shaking so much, I could barely hold my bow. I got thru the piece, but it sounded nothing like the way I had practiced at home countless times and with maybe 1 other person there. I think I had an empath shutdown sitting with the other violinists (mostly kids). I couldn't stop coughing and just decided to leave, go home, and calm down. I was thoroughly confident going into the recital, and left feeling totally embarrassed.

I suffer from a bit of performance anxiety. I'm a newbie violinist and, strange as it may seem, an experienced shooter. Clay pigeons, nothing that is living or breathing. (They aren't good to eat). I've travelled hundreds of miles to perform on a stage and once I got there, I couldn't do it. The group stuff was OK, but the solo stuff (with a backing track) was a no-no. If I'm shooting and a few other shooters are standing behind me, I can't do it. It's terrible, but it's how I'm made, I suppose. Your explanation in the video may make a difference in both spheres of my life. I'll give it a go.

For me, in exams, we have an etude then a piece, I usually start good in the etude, but but getting to the end of it, my hands start shaking, and then I need to play the piece with shaky hands... My teacher always says that I'm good and I can do it and that I'm probably better than many other students, He keeps encouraging me and saying that even if I make a mistake its not the end of the world, People around me never put me down. But.... I think it's me who is putting myself down, and this is even harder. Also, when I play in front of my teacher or the other students, I usually play good, but in the exam, which my teacher is also a part of the jury, this shaking happens....

I appreciate the brevity and simplicity of your advice: breathe deeply, slowly (using the throat trick), and meditate away negative thoughts. One thing I noticed recently in a Helene Grimaud piano recital was that she sat FOR 20 SECONDS at the keyboard before starting to play! Here's her performance: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mrV4nKyQmt_dk4k.html Now that takes focus and self-confidence when you're before a thousand people in a concert hall. It seems to work, as I heard no flubs in her playing of a virtuoso piece. I'm retired and an amateur musician, but I gave up classical guitar decades ago -- for reasons similar to what you describe. And I still get performance nerves!

I hope you don't give up forever as I.can assure you it's possible, with yogic breathing, to overcome performance anxiety. I suggest focusing on breath work first and coming back to your playing later and seeing what a.difference it makes
