How to overdub / multitrack on the ZOOM H5

2 жыл бұрынI use the ZOOM H5 a lot for recording piano and guitar and I ALWAYS forget how to set it up for overdubbing (so you can record your instrument over a backing track, for example, playing guitar over some synth tracks your recorded previously). So here's a very short video how to do it. I think it's needlessly complicated, but on the other hand it's nice ZOOM thought of this.

Some bands / artists I've been following for a long time are (among others) Massive Attack, Pink Floyd, Pet Shop Boys, Archive, A-Ha, Yes, Porcupine Tree, John Mellencamp, Jean-Michel Jarre, Metallica, Peter Gabriel and Perturbator. So my music will kind of sound like those (without ever reaching the greatness of those artists, of course). :-)

It's really useful for adding acoustic instruments to existing tracks, especially piano, that instrument won't move easily. :)

Hi, i just watched Floyd Steinberg's youtube channel video and enjoyed it! Good explanation ! I also have one question as well! The zoom h5 is good for podcasts? or there is a better one for this purpose? what is your opinion bro

This really depends on what you're planning to do. The microphones are superb and create a three dimensional room impression. But you'll also need a wind / pop shield. It's strong point really is mobile recording.

A few people use these and similar recorders to record the sound for YT videos and podcasts, so yes. As Floyd says though, you'll need a wind or pop shield.

You must first convert your mp3 to wav. After that, follow the steps shown in this video.

Hi, thanks for watching. In Windows? Install Audacity (www.audacityteam.org/ ) and open the file. It's properties will be displayed in the bottom left of the "waveform box".

So theres no chance I can use the Files I recorded with L and R and overdub over them? The ZoomH5 tells me there is no file If I want to put it into the 1 and 2 channels.

The format of the recording needs to be the same as your recording setup. So if you recorded a stereo file previously, you need to place that file on a stereo channel, while mono recordings need to be placed on mono channels.

also, you can't use the same file twice in an overdub. you need to "detach" the file from the other channel before using it as a background track.

@@mr_floydst Yes. But can I record something with the same settings on L R and then overdub on the file I just recorded with LR without using external devices? Unless I cant do it while im on the way.

@@FrederikLohse You can "move" your recorded file to 1/2, and then record again on L/R. I took an hour today to find the right solution

What is really turning me off on the H5 is that it only takes SDHC cards. Which by nature only go up to 32Gb, are slow and becoming harder to get at good prices.

Great tip, but I'm in need of just hearing a backtrack when recording. No overdub. I have come to a solution of using one of the inputs to plug the backtrack device while recording, but I would like to use both inputs to record in some situations. Do you have a better solution for that use?

Can you please explain why the process I'm showing here is not a solution for your problem? The H5 has 4 tracks, and in this video, two tracks are used for a track you load onto the H5, and you then can use the other two for recording in stereo (or two mono tracks). Plug your headphone in and you'll hear both your recording and the backing track on your headphone.

@@mr_floydst on my h5 It seems I can only have acess to two tracks. If I turn on the 2 tracks from the inbuild Mic, the inputs are turned off. I'll check If I can enable the 4 tracks at once in the settings

The H5 has a stereo recording and a 4 track mode (I think this is explained in this video). You need to create a 4 track project first.
