Excellent video on proper form. It's so hard for me to Envision the proper angle of the catch as I'm paddling. Seeing it here helps me Envision proper alignment of my arms, shoulders Etc.

This is such a beautiful view of a super clean stroke. Question though: I see the blade entering the water at an angle greater than 90 degrees, whereas I was always under the impression that the blade should enter the water perpendicular to the water/boat. Thoughts on this? Is it just simply individual stroke dynamics?

I was tought its 60% push and 40% pull. Or even 70%. But this video is saying dont push?

Nice vid but the wording is quite misleading, at least when watched by a beginner: you don't pull the water back. Never ever. You plant the blade firmly in the water, you "lock it" it in and you pull the ski forward towards the paddle. (And you push it with your foot) Imagine you are putting your paddle into mud or concrete. That's how a proper catch should feel like. If you watch a slow motion vid of a good paddler you will notice that the paddle doesn't move a singe cm/inch through the water. The ski (or outrigger canoe) is moving forward, not the paddle back ward. Again: your motion looks great, it's just the wording ;-)

Well physically speaking, theory wise, you do pull/push the water. But just like concrete, instead of moving, the water pushes you back with the same force in the opposite direction, making you go forward.

And see Florian Mirus, below .......yes - you never pull water back BUT also - the blade does absolutely move Just not backwards.

@@AB-uk4pd Look, folks: I retired from coaching 20 years ago! Using wings, I would still tell people to think it is more like a propellor - but using only about a fifth of the total [arc] and the paddler pushes the blade out from the boat sideways to utilise the "lift" in it; and getting as much in the water time [the blade] as poss. The ideal stroke path depends on the design of the blade. [But if you talk to the designers - which we did - you may find they do not actually know what it is doing!] Elbow angle stays pretty much constant and "power" is coming most from your back [max swing] - through your body - down your pushing leg ...... you know all that. There are loads of great you tubes of Lisa and the other girls: you needn't really look any further... but even their coaches haven't all the answers. Example: as you bury the blade, how much forward propulsion are you getting from the longditudinal curve... vertically downwards. There's a Pom called Ivan Lawler who's done a series of youtubes - and he's some sort of big coach - reckons - I think - the first downward push is the most important. Whatever the story; you don't ever pull the blade back. That's going forward on the flat, of course. Bizare thing: the National Library in Wgton still has my NZCA training manual from about 1978. No wing paddles then!

Why are you showing an explanatory video about rowing while disregarding the safety rules, why is the rower not wearing a life jacket ?!, why is the strap for connecting the paddle to the boat not used ?!, why is the strap for connecting the boat to the rower not being used ?!
