Hi guys,
As promised in the previous figure painting video here is a sort of "how to" figure painting video, although it is really more just a "how I do" figure painting.
Anyway hopefully it fills in some time for you all and perhaps you pick up a tip or two along the way.
Thanks for taking the time to watch, hopefully you are all keeping healthy and not going too stir crazy if your in a lock down of some sort.
Cheers Glen

You are so right there is no need to get stressed or mad doing this hobby. It's suppose to be about having fun and relaxing. Some people take it way to serious. The figure looks great. You did an awesome job.

Have been taking my time with my figures, also finally found the type of sponge/cloth you use in your wet pallette. I had to throw my previous container out. The sponge glued to the bottom just didn't work without almost flooding the container. The other issue was I had some paint bleed into it from the parchment paper and after a couple of days of not painting the sponge seemed to be growing mold from the paint. I scrapped that one and made a new one and what a difference!

CC ist the most importand ingredient for scale modelling. I like the way you paint with acrylics but i still paint faces with oils. Because when you messed up whipe is away with a cotton stick an white spirit, but the drying time is quit nasty. Maybe i should do more with acrylics. First i saw the eyes my thought was, the hunchback of Notre Dame joined the german army…..just kiddin. I like the result and the figure would look great on a diorama. A++ and thumbs up
@HalidonDioramas
@HalidonDioramas 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks De Lan, cant start a project without a good supply of CC in the fridge 😋 I would do oils on larger scales, but a combination of lazy and impatience usually means i stick to the acrylics at 1/35, but you are correct oils are way more forgiving 👍

Perfect. But I always think the same: 1. We use an airbrush for the first painting, in order to preserve the details. 2. Then we add 6 layers of pencil painting, including barnish... Anyway, adding a layer of Canadian Club improves the final result. With or without paintbrush. ... ;)

Really great "how to" vid. I think a lot of armour guys who can build/paint some of the most awesome looking tanks (etc) shy away from doing figures because they're worried they'll end up looking like mutants. This is what prevented me from doing figures for a long time, but have gradually come around to making them. I still don't make enough to say that I do a good job, but I think I'm good enough so that the eyes both look in the same direction, which I think is about the only part of a figure you need to get 'right'. Anyway, great vid thanks for sharing.

There is an error. The eagle on the arm was carried by the SS. If the model recreates an SS soldier, the national colors (black, white, and red) cannot be placed on the helmet. In addition, that decal is placed on the right side and not on the left, on the left side was the shield with the eagle. Everything else is correct. Best regards.

@HalidonDioramas 4 жыл бұрын
Yes they are SS figures, depicting a member of the 17th Panzer Grenadier Division, they were supported by a number of other troops forming a composite group which was a mix of SS and Heer. Our man must have picked up the wrong helmet I guess, as for the insignia being on the wrong side you are totally correct, but if was on the other side no one would see it and I wanted the splash of colour.

I have started watching these posts across most of the model makers and there appears to be a common theme; that despite making them look extremely realistic they all seem to have ‘shine’ which of course is wrong..is there a problem in achieving a Matt finish on uniforms etc?
@HalidonDioramas
@HalidonDioramas 3 жыл бұрын
I think it is probably more a matter of the lighting than a genuine shine, when i look at the figures i have painted in person all of which get a final dull coat as a matter of course they are very flat, espicially under natural light, but under lights for filming they can gt a bit of a gleam on them. I think colour balancing and quality of camera can also have an impact on how they come across on film i imagine.

Hello Glen, hope you don't mind me calling you by your first name. I have recently returned to modelling after an absence of 50 years to help with anxiety and I was just in time before the virus locked us down to acquire many kits and paints etc. I have recently made contact with Steve Motram who has been an enormous help mainly with confidence and advice, however I have become bogged down on my first kit through various reasons the first my trepidation of airbrushing which after several poor attempts with cheap tools I've invested after discussing with Steve, in a Harder & Steenbeck Infinity which has allowed me to progress a bit. But here's the latest block and I need to get by or else I'm worried I might turn away and not return regardless of the investment. I am really struggling with the painting and washing of stowage. I know to some it may be a minor point but I just can't get it right and there doesn't seem to be anything out there as a good guide to how best to do it. I know from subscribing to your channel that you are a wonderful painter and was wondering if you could perhaps do a definitive posting on the painting and weathering of stowage...….please. Neil K
@HalidonDioramas
@HalidonDioramas 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Neil, no worries about the name, i usually get called much much worse 😜 First things first, associating with Motty is a bad habit to form, he will fill your head with fantasy about the greatness of English Cricket and teach you how to mispronounce the word "book" 😋 Second thing, the hobby is fun, and in my book you really can't do anything wrong especially if you are happy with the end result. I do heaps of things "wrong" but i like the results so i don't care, it is liberating if you can get into that space and just have fun, don't give up, just keep gluing shit together until you are happy! I am about to start on a 1/35 scale Pershing Tank & diorama, and there will be stowage in that so if you can hang on for a while i will make a special effort to cover how i do the stowage in particular. Thanks for watching and take care mate 👍👍👍

Do not paint the eyes. Look at pictures of people, who are photographed from a distance. Because that is how we look at scale figures. Do you actually see the eyes? Do you see the white and the pupil? No. First, the white of an eye is not white, certainly not when seen from a distance, when the eye is in the shadow. Second, the iris is only about 12 mm in diameter. In scale 1/35 that is 0.34mm. And one third to one half of that is covered by the eyelids. That puts the white even more in the shadow. Do not paint what you KNOW (and most modelers know it wrong, anyway). Paint what you see, as if you are looking at the real thing, from a distance. If you can't see it from a distance, don't paint it on a model. It really is that simple. And more realistic. When modelers paint eyes like you do, it always looks as if those guys have a terrible disease or deformation, or something....! ;-)
