This was probably the easiest to follow and understand painting video I have watched. It was visually well done too. Thank you for producing it.

Really nice to see how a pro does it. Finding highs is the hardest for me, i tend to use a light drybrush for that, but, that doesnt work on scales like these. I didnt know the inks from the game line, but as it is vallejo it will be good, so im gonna buy it for sure!

As a base - for leather - I tend to us a more brownish grey to warm the whole tone, but taht's a matter of personal taste.

@@vallejocolors Any tips for painting leather would be great, its something I have always struggled with, so when I found your video I was in seven heaven lol....I have a lot of Mr. Black books showing VMC colours being used, but watching your videos is 100% better, so thank you Vallejo. I use your paints for one simple reason, they are the best. Simply the best. Now I have to get your inks sets.

really good tutorial overall, the 2nd song seems really out of place for me tho^^ im trying to adapt this for a coat (28mm scale), not sure yet how to go about the large flat surfaces i guess a brown oil wash would be a neat option too since you can easily remove it from the highlighted areas

you should also give a tutorial about using brush. which kind do you use? how much paint do you hold at the tip of the brush? how often you clear the brush before using it again? i usually screw with the amount of paint included at the tip. i either take too much paint or too little and my brushes are quickly degraded and unusable for precise work

usually kolinsky sable brushes do a pretty good job. while painting always try to use the biggest brush you can. the paint is stored in the belly part of your brush tip (most of the times around the middle area), when pressing the tip down too hard your brush tip will release all the moisture inside. sadly you cant learn a light touch from tutorials, thats something every painter has to figure out on their own but for practice try to draw the thinnest lines you can with a big brush. while painting, try to avoid painting with the tip and make use of the belly area of your brush (except for the tiny details ofc). this way you put less overall stress to the tip and prolong its life. if you use natural hair (like sable hair) give it a nice cleaning with soap/shampoo. questions about how much paint are rather pointless since it always depends. overgeneralized rule of thumb would be a lot for large areas, small amounts for small areas. (duh) i tend to avoid synthetic brushes for most of my workflow since mine usually loose its sharp tip after ,or sometimes during, a single project. hope i could help, happy painting ;)

I'd like to know the thought process behind choosing to use either cold or warm colours for highlighting. Different tutorials will use one or the other, In my own painting i tend to lean towards warmer highlights like sunny skin tone or ice yellow. However in this tutorial pale blue is used to give a cool highlight tone and I'm not sure how to decide which is the correct choice when I'm painting. Fantastic video thank you.
@vallejocolors
@vallejocolors 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Steven! If you are interested in highlighting you can use references with "yellow" within their composition; this way you won't desaturate the color and you will get a bright finish. On the other hand, if you want to create shadows (and cold color schemes above all) you can use blue, violet, or black color. This way you can get more interesting shades and depth. Angel Giraldez made a not long time ago a video explaining the color theory and these questions you're facing, this is the video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y7OfdNR3tNvOmX0.html

"highlights are cool, shadows are warm" - not sure where i picked up this quote, but its a good rule of thumb for deciding on colors. (ice yellow is a cool color too, like most yellows, white, etc)

This post was so helpful with my projects nicely done! I do have a one question though on a figure would you use a glossy or matte finish 🤔? (I know this an older post) either way thx
@vallejocolors

Hello Starved Artist! The use of both glossy and matte varnish is up to the artist's likes or needs :) Personally, we do love matte finish :)

this question is related to the Panzer Aces colors, so for example there is Afrika Korps Tank Crew 70.336, and Afrika Korps Tank Crew Highlight 70.340. So how would somebody go about highlighting the base color? would they mix the highlight 340 into the base 336? or no mixing and just applying the highlight on top of the base? Thank you for the answer.
@vallejocolors
@vallejocolors Жыл бұрын
Hello M F! You can mix both colors to make a intermediate light and, for the final touch, keep highlighting the area with the lighter color.
