Only the middle screw on the sides where the joycons go needs to be removed. The rest can stay. Hope this helps so people dont accidentally damage their switch.

You can buy a third-party kickstand and it works well! You just pop it in! I use it personally. It just looks ugly. Nintendo was just lazy this time :/

I'd recommend wet sanding the primer and doing 3 to 4 lighter coats. It'll help avoid orange peel and you most likely won't need to sand your top coat. Prep is everything with spray painting.

You can just remove the middle screw on the slide rails instead of all of them. I kid my switch a lot too and figured this out the second time around. Looks good though enjoyed the vid!

you can see the Switch in this video I did a few weeks ago, replacing my analog sticks to white ones so it matches the theme better. I also order new white buttons so they have the letters in them kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oKiaodJq3L27ips.html

its been a few months since you made this. have you had any like problems from like sweat from your hands or heat from the switch. has any peeling or color disfigure happen?

hey Jamie thanks for watching the video. I will say I play more docked than undocked, so it hasn't contacted my hands a whole lot, I also got a set of bright green joy cons when Luigi's Mansion came out so those are sitting on there now. I did order white thumb sticks, so I'll be doing a video of me replacing those onto the blue ones in the coming weeks

I haven’t done this project so I don’t know for sure, but the average heat from the switch shouldn’t be able to melt the paint off after a few months of drying. I also don’t think sweat will do anything.

At around 6:25 , what was done to make the letterring indentation pop out? Did you put some alcohol and white paint?

i just used regular white acrylic paint, than wiped it with a paper towel. Since its a indentation, some of the paint stayed in the indent when I wiped it with the towel making it more visible

Hi thanks for watching, yes the smaller details I was just using acrylic craft paint. you can get that at Walmart, Joann's Fabric, Michales. They come in small bottles. I did this before the clear coat process

Hey Darci thanks for the comment. Soooooo I use my switch 95% of it Docked, so I dont have enough handheld use with it to say it really made a difference. I played it in bed a few nights here and there. If it did feel weird I did get another set of joy cons, their lime green, so I could always switch to those.

you could hand paint it, but its hard to achieve a paint job without brush strokes. I did have a screen protector on the screen itself too when I did it.

Hi sorry it wasn't clearer in the video. I was using a really light grey acrylic paint and than wiping it off right away so it only got down in those parts. You could do this before adding the clear coat this way it will be protected better

This question might be late but I'm desperate to bring back the matte coating on my switch lite after my niece smeared yellowish ointment when I was away. In panic, I rubbed alcohol over said parts to try and remove the chunks of ointment. What came out was something that looked like it was scratched badly and there are lines which are reflective but most of the part is matte. Are there any/Can I use any matte spray to bring back that matte coating to my switch lite? Thank you in advance.

thats odd. I guess the alcohol had some reaction to the plastic and the ointment. When I clean my stuff to prep I use alcohol but its diluted so its not as strong. You could try wet sanding the back part. Thats what your referring too??? But I would def take the back part off for that. Luckily its only a few screws. You can use something like 1500 or 1000 grit sand paper. Wetting the paper and sanding. But be careful because you can sand off the Switch Logo as well. So maybe sand around it. Than let it dry and get a Matte Clear paint to protect it. Hope this helps

Slots and jacks can be sealed more reliably with paint masking putty - it's a bit like bubblegum/bluetack, and miniature/gundam painters use it in openings, recesses etc.

What happens if you just cover the buttons with tape and spray paint it without taking it apart? I have seen a few people do that but they don't say how.

than you risk getting some paint into the system itself, since the buttons have that gap to be pressed down. if you tape it really good than you will also have parts not painted around the buttons. So it would be like blue like mine but have black rings around the buttons where no paint went.

Hey Luis great question. While it might be possible having constant rubbing on them, and the surface being rubber and not plastic it will probably rub off. o wow hydro dipping huh, I never did that before. I've seen some videos though, you would need the sheet with the pattern, a big bucket of water, some clear coat and thats about it. yes I added the crystal clear by rustuelom on the buttons, 3 coats. you could add some wax as well after. I usually do so they slide up and down the holes better and what not

that depends how much clear coat you put on them, and if you use some wax after.I usually try to do at last 3-5 coats to get a good build up. You can get it pretty smooth that way

Hey thanks for watching. So after I sprayed the color I use just some rustoleum crystal clear on there. 3 coats. If you want to go overkill you can get 2K clear at a paint body shop. That will make it really glossy and harden even more but its like $20 a can ( you can order on amazon too) Rustoleum Crystal Clear - amzn.to/44sto80 2K Clear - amzn.to/3K8C9ed

Yes that will work as well. I painted a lot of my NES controllers with arylic paint and than used the same Rusteolum crystal clear over it

they actually do sell the +/- , home and capture buttons, they come with the kits even when they aren't shown in the pictures, I didn't think I would be receiving them in my kit but I did in fact receive them lol

Hey Behren, yeah it seems that way, butttt good thing its actually on the screen protector. I need to peel it off and put a new one on because it has some scratches, so than it should look crisp

great question. Option 1: I wouldn't do that with the joy cons itself because its hard to get a perfect seal around the D pad and buttons, you're likely to get paint inside it and onto the board. I did do it with the Switch itself because to get that front bezel plate off I would have to take a lot of screws and parts out and I didnt think I would remember how it went back together. There was less gaps and moving parts with that though. Best thing you can do is use the video as reference for taking apart the controllers incase you get stuck with re assemble Option 2: but not as a nice outcome would be to just paint it with acrylic paints with a brush, but this will leave some brush strokes, but you can control the paint flow better. Option 3: You could just go the sticker or decal route. www.DecalGirl.com has plenty to choose from, or you can design your own. I did it for my WiiU controller and a PS4 controller. check out the videos to see what I mean. Hey there thanks for watching. I was just using some blue painters tape, you could also just use masking tape than I was using an exacto knife. Make sure you have a fresh blade so it can cut easy. These can be found at any craft store or in the craft section in Walmart

I did not sand them at all, the paint I used had a primer in it so it helped stick. You can give them a light sanding with like 500 grit or so this way it has small scuff marks to help the paint adhere better. yeah I got my screw driver set off of eBay, I put a link in the description. Or if you order the replacement buttons they include one in the package

You actually can use your switch a lot like a tablet, without the controllers, excluding games. Just tap the start button when you turn the switch on and you can navigate through the menus and apps like KZfaq just by tapping the screen.

@@RussLyman Thank you, so much for the update. your video inspired me to make my switch duo chrome purple and thought to encase it with liquid plastic instead of turtle wax to finish it, but wanted to see how well the paint held up before I went thru with the whole thing. I play in hand held mode all the time. I bought an Amazon basics hard case to also help protect the paint job.

@@gmvixn8849 thats great news for sure.Glad I could inspire you. Yes its all about the prep work and your clear on top if it will be in your hand most of the time. Much like anything if it is touched a lot it will eventually wear down. You could always get maybe a clear case for it? Not sure if they sell those for the Switch I know the 3ds had one

@@RussLyman oh i see. oh no I dont like clear cases. but I can seal it with a liquid plastic sealant. but i got a armor case thats just a big carrying case to prevent it from dropping and taking big impacts. for the carriying case im painting that to match the switch and i may just do a top clear coat on that or i may liquid seal that one too and polish it with sand paper and then top it off with a wax.

For the buttons you can take a fine line sharpie and write the letters

that is another option as well. You would have to put some clear coat over it for sure because it would rub off with excessive use

the same way I painted the rest of the controller. It gets hard though because building up the primer, base coat, and clear coat, does make the button a tiny bit bigger and can often have fitment issues. I did end up ordering a button pack online that came with white buttons, this way the right joy con would than still have the buttons labeled with X,Y,B,A

Yes yours is the Switch Lite, which does not come apart. When those were announced I was inspired by that to paint my regular Switch. My goal is to do silver buttons with purple font. My strategy is to spray paint silver and then once the paint is cured, I’ll hand write the letters on with Purple sharpie

I stripped the top of the screw. Can't remove any screw. Anyone know how to remove a stripped screw

oooooo thats not good. There are a few tricks you can try. I seen if you put a rubber band on the screw and put the screwdriver ontop of the rubber band it might get enough grip to turn it. The only other thing I know is drilling it out. But I wouldn't attempt that on my switch. Maybe you could super glue the bit to the screw. Let it really dry up and try turning it after 🤷‍♂️

i had a switch lite in teal color,but my sister broke it but i am getting a normal switch next week,i will put transparent joy con shells and i will maybe change the backplate to a custom one

O nice yeah, I loved that color, its what inspired this paint job. Well at least you are getting a new one and now you can play on the TV. Changing the backplate is super easy only a few screws
