How to paint a Phoenix - Acrylic painting for International Women’s Day

In this video I am showing you the painting process of my “Phoenix” themed painting for the occasion of International Women's Day. While you watch the painting timelapse I wanted to speak a bit about my thoughts behind the painting and Women’s Day and a whole lot of talking.

Canvas - Yes canvas -16*20
Acrylic paints - Liquitex basics
Generic taklon bristle paintbrushes
Generic bristle brush (round) for scrubbing and painting smoky clouds

Wonderful painting! I love the placement of the cool purples and blues next to the warm yellows and oranges. It's very dynamic, as is the woman with her arms spread looking up. Your comparison of humans' lives to the Phoenix almost made me cry. It's so easy to forget that when we burn to ashes, figuratively speaking, that we _will_ rise again, and this was a great reminder.

Your painting looks amazing. I liked the comparison you made with people and the phoenix. I think that it is very relatable to everyone. I do agree that the painting does have a dark vibe but i am into the fantasy genres so i am fine with it just the way it is.

Sayanti, I truly appreciate this painting and the thoughts behind it. It inspires me, especially since I'm a colored pencil "artist" with the desire to draw my own interpretation of the Phoenix. Like you, I've looked at dozens of paintings and drawings and can appreciate them all, but very few come through with the idea I have of "my own Phoenix", but your painting comes closer than most and truly inspires me to search more inside myself for what I would like to put onto paper. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful art and your lovely, thoughtful heart in this video.

Ok I’ve just finished the video and shared it on my KZfaq community page. This is just amazing 😍 As for my thoughts on the meaning: I can really feel the fierce light of the fire and the phoenix and it reminds me of how powerful change can be and how overwhelming it can feel, even when it’s good. The smoke is dark and heavy and that reminds me of the dread that we can sometimes feel when we know change is coming or is necessary. But then when it finally happens it is usually a relief, and liberating. This kind of change is so relatable in our personal lives but it’s also relevant on a global scale. I feel that equality is something we have been fighting for for so long and we have gotten so far but maybe we are only on the cusp of that total transformation. There are those of us still resisting, living in the dread of that blinding smoke, afraid of what it might mean for their lives if they come out into the light. My own name actually means resurrection and I have always identified with the phoenix so this painting really touches me on so many levels 😘 well done, my dear!

As a goth myself, I can see some of that in the painting. But I wanted to share my thoughts about phoenixes and why I think their amazing. A phoenix represent both fire and air as elements, fire is destructive and brutal, where air is usually seen as soothing and gentle, yet impossible to tame. Phoenixes are basically unkillable. No matter how many times they fail, they are reborn, they rise from their own ashes. It is a very good creature to represent the fight for equality, because once the thought is born, it cannot be killed. It doesn't matter how many times they try to extinguish the flames, we will arise again and again.
