This is in fact one of the most useful drawing tutorials I stumbled upon. Normally watching tutorials feel like: OK, we have two squares here and a circle there, and three seconds later there is the whole snow man with the fully shaded body. But this time, I think, I understood some things. :)

Such a beautiful painting. I love the combination of loose areas on outer edges and more focused on the middle ❤️

Thanks for that Emily. I have been painting for many years but would now like to concentrate on painting animals. I have watched many suggestions on how to paint fur, but really find it difficult.

Gorgeous! Any substitute suggestions for Transparent Brown Oxide and Gamboge Nova? Txs
@EmilyOlsonArt
@EmilyOlsonArt 2 жыл бұрын
You could use New Gamboge by Daniel Smith, Indian Yellow (W&N), or you can mix your own warm yellow using a primary yellow and warm red. Burnt Umber can be used instead of Transparent Brown Oxide but will be a little more opaque.

Really well done! And now a really dumb question.... You said "I spread out the bristles of my brush", so how do you do that? Are you using your fingers to squeeze the brush? Using a paper towel and pressure to spread them (which would also remove some of the paint) before going to the painting? Some other method? I've heard of some painters using old (and sometimes low quality, though not with loose hairs) brushes and some even going so far as to take old brushes that have dried masking fluid on them, causing the bristles to form irregular spacings. Appreciate your thoughts!
@EmilyOlsonArt

Not a dumb question! 😀 I load up the brush with paint (premixed to the color and value I need), with no excess water, and press & twirl it on my palette to spread out the bristles. I wouldn't use masking fluid -- too much risk of just ruining the brush!
@MastiffMike1
@MastiffMike1 2 жыл бұрын
@@EmilyOlsonArt Thanks! Yeah artist that I follow that uses masking fluid to shape brushes also cuts them and really ruins them for any other purpose (but he does say it's a good use for old brushes that are already less than pristine). He does a lot of hair/fur (and feathers) and so he says it's a quick way to add multiple hairs (with variety) per stroke. I just wondered how you recommend doing it. Keep the vids coming!

I don't have transparent brown oxide but I do have quinacridone rust by M Graham. I believe it's a PR101 pigment. Would that work? Also, I want a clean transparent orange and can't choose whether to get the one by Holbein or Schmincke. Any thoughts? I love the hue of cadmium orange but hate the opacity. If I tried the wet in wet spots with my QOR indigo it would be a huge mess. It's that a reason you use Holbein? Lack of oxgal? And finally, I want a pointy Lebenzon brush like the one you use, can you give me it's exact name? It's it the small white or itty bitty orange? I can only afford one.
@EmilyOlsonArt
@EmilyOlsonArt 2 жыл бұрын
I think your quinacridone rust could work, although you might need to neutralize it a little (with Ultramarine for example) if it appears too red. I have never trued those oranges you mentioned, so I cannot speak from experience on their properties. I would check out Jane Blundell's blog--it's an excellent resource if you are looking for the best substitutes based on pigment numbers. To be honest, I rarely take the pigment number into consideration. I prefer to choose my colors based on their mixing quality, vibrancy, and transparency. :) My Indigo is Daniel Smith-it is one of my favorite colors! From what I've seen, however, most other indigos lean bluer. A better substitute for DS Indigo would be Payne's Grey. For the Lebenzon brushes, I use my Small White Synthetic 3/4" bristle brush probably the most! 🙌
@ChristinaTodd1970
@ChristinaTodd1970 2 жыл бұрын
@@EmilyOlsonArt That's the one!! The small white synthetic!! I can manage $25, or maybe Santa will be nice this year. I've got QOR indigo which reminds me of a Prussian blue and I don't care for it. And I've got Mission Gold indigo which is a Payne's grey, so I don't have a good indigo. I also like the look of Daniel Smith's Payne's Bluish Gray. Decisions, decisions. I love Jane Blundells blog!
