Abstract Oil painting: Impasto jug with Porcelain effect with 5 steps!👇🏻
Welcome to this inspiring little demonstration of painting techniques for beginners. Today I'm going to show you how to create an oil painting of a jug with a porcelain effect using a palette knife.
Supplies needed:
25x30 cm (12x10 inch) canvas - Ideal for beginners, it is recommended to start small.
Titanium White
Vandyck Brown
Vermilion Red
Pine green
Ocher
Black
Why choose oil paint?
Oil painting is an excellent choice for beginners and experienced artists alike thanks to its unique characteristics:
Slow drying time: This allows for extensive work on details, mixing colors directly on the canvas, and correcting mistakes by scraping and starting again.
Rich Textures: Using a palette knife, you can create interesting and dynamic textural effects, called impastos, that add depth and dimension to your work.
Vibrant colors: Oil paint pigments provide unparalleled saturation and luminosity, allowing strong contrasts and subtle gradients to be created.
Production steps:👇🏻
1.Trace the jug:
Start by drawing the outline of the jug on the canvas. Use a light pencil or thin brush with diluted paint.
2. Paint the background:
Apply the paint to the background using broad movements with your palette knife. Overflow slightly onto the jug area for a more natural, integrated effect.
3. Trace the contours:
Go back over the contours of the jug which have been blurred by the background paint. Use a dark color like Vandyck Brown or Black to clearly define the edges.
4. Painting the jug:
Start by applying the base colors, then add touches of light and shadow to create volume. Play with paint thicknesses using the impasto technique to give a textured and realistic look to the jug.
5. Paint the small glass with the rose:
Add the small glass and the rose following the same principles of light and shadow. Use bright colors and textures to make them distinct but harmonious with the rest of the composition.
Practical advice :
Mixing Colors: Use a palette to mix your colors before applying them to the canvas. Feel free to experiment with different blends to achieve unique shades.
Palette Knife: The palette knife is perfect for applying thick layers of paint and creating interesting textures. Vary the angles and pressures to diversify the effects.
Cleaning and touch-up: If you make a mistake, simply use the knife to scrape off the paint and start again. Oil paint dries slowly, so you have plenty of time to adjust your artwork.
