Learn how to paint the next member of our Fellowship BOROMIR! For The Middle Earth SBG in this video.

I'm not a huge fan of most of the sculpts of the plastic fellowship, but Boromir's is not bad and you did a great job. Really liked the approach to the sleeve

Thank you kindly, i can certainly see them being a love/hate set of miniatures. Especially since there have been many versions of them since in metal too! Thank you, i really wanted to add something on there, but keep it fairly simple so that you can see there is some extra detail there when you look down on him on the table. Now that i have done that, i think i must do something similar for the hobbits right? haha

I have used oil paints for some time and I swear by them if you can live with the solvents. Skintones, cloth and clothes, metals and washes can be done very fast and easy once you know how to use oil paints. Quality is important. Cheap ones might be used for washes but they contain a lot less pigments and like to separate. Buying quality paints like Old Holland is cheaper in the long run since you need to use much less.

Sounds great! I have only used some in the past for basic washes and grime - one day i would like to experiment and see if i can paint up a mini totally with oil paints - could e a fun video to make! :):)

Thanks very much!! Yeh i try to simplify it where i can just so i can physically paint it haha I used to pencil draw Goblin/Orc banners for Fantasy back in the day and that was super fun too!

Thanks very much, i thought that he deserved a bit more attention as he has been golden for my in the Balins Tomb game (killed the troll a few times) and i will look forward to doing some MESBG scenarios with them all too! :):)

He did come a close second in the poll that i ran which then turned into this Boromir video. I think a hobbit will definitely be next when i return to this series. But i have the next two planned, and the next one will have some POWER to it...

Ah thank you for saying, thats really what they are all about - to try and help others on their hobby journey and have fun putting some paint onto miniatures :) Aragorn is on the list, i do have a few videos before that which i really need to get done, i just wish i had a clone to do half of my work - or maybe one day i can do KZfaq full time - that is the dream! :):)

Thank you, it's now my go to range after making the jump from Citadel. Yes with what ever paint range I use, I always thin them down ever so slightly with a bit of clean water to get a consistency that im happy with that can get a nice coverage without losing details of a miniature :):)

Another great video! Do you mind elaborating on the purple/red thinned paint on faces? Is there a reason to use this over a flesh wash?

Can't speak for Chris, who's a real pro, but most people use red to add some realistic tones to human flesh. Most pre-made skin washes, in my opinion, are very orange. If you glaze in some reddish hue (or other color that has red in it), you get a nice implication of flushed cheeks, blood near the surface of the skin, etc. I painted up my dwarves using purple and reddish brown glazes and I think they look nice.

Hey Twinkle! As the legend that Briars is he got there first. Totally agree with what he said, yes Flesh washes are good but they do have an orange/sepia tone to them - which is perfectly fine if you need to get things finished and it looks good for the table top :) The introductory red/purple even blue elements i find are great, I was looking at a variety of oil paintings in a museum back in the day and they all had these tones to them - and they looked fantastic. I then jumped onto google (as you do) and found that a lot of painters (especially Spanish and Italian mini painters do that style as well) For me i personally like to use thinned down paints for this specific stage rather than washes - because i want the colour to sit on top of the skin rather than sink into the facial recesses. And i found that it doesn't take long at all to do and it adds an extra element of shade to flesh tones :)

What I don't like of shades/washes is the shiny finish they give. Also when I use Nuln oil sometimes it leaves white patches in the deep recesses: am I the only one who has this problem?

Too much pooling and/or the wash not being mixed up well. I suspect it's an emulsifier GW uses in their washes.

@@emamag6455 I think any pre-made wash COULD cause that problem, but I have noticed it more with GW. That is only my personal experience and others might not have witnessed the same problem. It could also be due to mineral deposits in hard water, but I honestly believe it's some sort of dried emulsifier.

@@briarsandbantams I also thought to mineral deposits, but now I use distilled water and the problem persist, so yes, it must be some ingredient in the wash. Thanks again

A good question! and im glad that you have had a response from the legend that is briarsandbantams! I find that some do at times, i had it sometimes with citadel and army painter washes/shades now and again, most of the time its my fault for not shaking enough - as im eager to paint i sometimes forget altogether and just slap on the paint haha I have had Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade leave white patches in the past when i used GW paints - i was less than impressed after painting a good 40 models or so one day then came back to them looking like they have been in a snow storm. LUCKILY using some Medium by itself and painting it on did sort it out, so it turned out ok in the end, but it did make me weary the next time i used the washes. At the end i tend to airbrush a matt varnish of my minis anyway so i will end up with a consistent finish to the collection :):)

lol i was in a very sunny location recently in Ibiza! I came back a bit tanned haha The important thing was that i did not come back like a red lobster! haha

Honestly this tutorial is awesome, but am I the only one who finds the color match with GW paints is weird? Like I've looked for the Crypt Wraith, and it is said somewhere on the internet that the color from GW that match it is Stormvermin Fur and here you say it's Vulcan Green. What should I do then?

Thank you kindly, oo definitely not Stormvermin fur, thats like a grey colour as crypt wraith is a green. I went through a lot of paints to get a conversin chart going a few years back to try and match or get as close as between GW and Army painter. I've just finished a new conversion chart this week which i will pop up on the website tonight as a downloadable guide, and then i just need to make the graphics for the videos next. So i'll be going forward with them soon after i finish the last of this Fellowship series :):)
