Painting Ikea furniture (laminate) can be really easy if you follow these simple steps!
I had to talk really fast to fit this all in 60 seconds! 🤣
steps:
- sand with 220 grit
- clean all dust, dirt and debris
- apply thick layer of primer. I like to use BIN shellac based primer or Extreme Bond Primer.
- paint with cabinet paint using a satin, semi-gloss or gloss
enjoy!

A professional old school painter taught me to tint your primer with your finish paint color. It provides more cover and you'll need only *one* coat of paint. Primer is usually cheaper than paint. Win win

So would you say an indoor/outdoor paint is not suitable? That’s the paint I was planning on using
@klbs9630
@klbs9630 11 ай бұрын
@@kweennikki100if you’re going to go through all the effort and time it takes to paint furniture and ensure durability, you’re better off using all the proper things up front. 1. Shellac based primer or specialty adhesion bonding primer for hard to adhere surfaces 2. Enamel Cabinet paints not wall paints or paint specifically designed for furniture (chalk paints, alkyled paints etc). 3. Proper top coat/sealer like polyurethane clear coats designed for furniture surfaces can help overall durability or scratch resistance in heavy used surfaces (tables and shelves for example). The majority of the work is in proper prep, sand, tack cloth, degrease (Krud cutter foam spray is my favorite) and clean off. Ensure its dry, prime, once dry fine grit light sanding, tack cloth again. I like priming with two coats but I’m also aware that the pieces I paint (cabinets/shelves/media cabinet) can be prone to heavy accidental abuse/wear and tear. Once double primed and sanded and wiped then paint accordingly. Using the wrong paint or a poor quality paint, even with proper prep, can seriously mess with the durability and finish. It’s just not worth the frustration and breakdown since you’ve already spent time prepping it properly. Lol I’ve learned from my past mistakes just trying to use any paints, and they were high quality interior/exterior wall surface paints too. Your future self will thank you if you start off using the correct paints for the surface your working on

How to reduce brushstrokes or foam roller texture? Sand in between layers? If so, what grid? Or will one layer of paint be enough? Will the finish be smooth?

@@EmmaSimard no, the 220 sanding was for the original, unpainted piece to give a surface for the paint to stick to. This person is talking about hiding brush strokes after they paint.
@DIYDanie
@DIYDanie Жыл бұрын
Some paints are self leveling which is the most ideal in any situation. If you are going to sand between layers, you really need to let that paint fully cure first and you can use a 220 grit. If you're worried about brush strokes though - I vote spraying it! Beautiful professional looking finish every time and you can rent one from most hardware stores.

Your final project turned out amazing. My daughter was just given an IKEA tv stand and the paint is flaking off in sheets. It’s obvious they didn’t sand or prime. She asked if there was any way to save it. I told her yes but it’s going to be a lot of work. I’m going to use your technique I’m kind of the grammar police at my house and not to criticize but you pronounced melamine incorrectly. The mine sound at the end is actually pronounced meen. Meh-lah-meen.
@kimberlymariefreeman
@kimberlymariefreeman Жыл бұрын
Grammar and pronunciation are different things. While you announced the correction in a kind way, please be away that pronunciation can often be more rural specific, country specific and often shows that someone learnt the word by reading it from a book/magazine (having had no previous exposure to it being said). So, when you look at pronunciation like that, you are most likely going to embarrass someone about their culture, or speech and language issues, or the fact that they increase their lexicon via reading. Always safest to be the authority of spelling and grammar within your own family (who are most likely more used to your style of showing love), than total strangers on the internet.

I think it depends on your material, whether there’s any damage and the level of finish you’re going for. From what I’ve seen, if the mdf or particle board is damaged, more priming and sanding is required before painting

What about a 2 in 1 primer and furniture paint (satin finish, waterbased)? Do I have to use a shilac primer under that too? Im repainting my new kitchen cabinets to black. I have amazing results on doors with this paint in white, but I used primer under them mainly just to mask the previous colors, and primer is cheaper. Shall I use primer just to play it safe or is it a waste of time and money, because my paint has primer in itself?
@DIYDanie
@DIYDanie Жыл бұрын
Are the doors already painted or wood? If it was me...I would def prime first to be safe. I've done the "no primer" route because my paint was a paint-and-primer in one and ultimately regretted it.
@IDoItCauseICan
@IDoItCauseICan Жыл бұрын
@@DIYDanie thank you. I also think that will be the safe choice. And applying primer is way faster and easier than paint anyway, because it's thinner. The new kitchen cabinets are laminated, and the other doors were laminated too. But only time will tell how successful were my painting. They look and feel amazing (they look like they were sprayed), i only finished them like 2-3 weeks ago. (All my indoor doors)
