I love this kind of video: to show how was the process that the artist went through to create something. It teaches so much about technic, materials, form, theory, methods, history, just wonderful and so much stuff to learn. Keep on with the series!

Laying the canvas horizontal. Painters I've known especially Ed Moses, who paint on a horizontal canvas either lay unstretched canvas on the ground (Jackson Pollock of course) or like Ed, they have a set of plywood faced stretchers to work on.This gives the canvas solid support everywhere. After a painting has dried Ed removes the canvas and re-stretches it on a regular open stretcher. Gerhard Richter must also use one of these two methods for his smear abstracts. Kandinsky probably did exactly what Sui Kim showed in the video. I think what might be of interest is that the work and methods of action painters like Pollock and Moses couls be traced directly back to Kandinsky, and while Kandinsky's paintings have a lot of 'movement' in them, he wasn't an action painter, or perhaps he might be thought of as a very early proto action painter.

Sweet video. Although I wouldn't consider her piece a Kadinsky representation. Merely because of her purpose which was to create an abstraction from her hometown. Kadinsky didn't do abstractions, he was an abstract painter and there are important differences between both. I think she nailed the looked but not the meaning behind the artist (Kadinsky)

It seemed like she didn't fully grasp him as an artist. He put alot of thought into the why of the way he painted, linking it to a form of spiritual evolution. She mearly copies the style.

Well Kandinsky started out by abstracting from representation iirc. I’m pretty sure that’s what’s going on in Cossacks, hence the rainbow (but I’m no expert). I do know that it wasn’t until later that he went full abstract.

Some of his early work was indeed abstract, learning methods from Matisse. He used townhouses and nature for inspiration. His later figurative work though was based on his own spiritual art theories.

Look at the context: The video purports to be an instructional video that will teach you how to paint like Kandinsky. Isn't there a difference between a project titled 'How to paint like Kandinsky' and one titled 'My painting inspired by Kandinsky'?

I would have to agree in that this is poor representation of Kandinsky style of painting and instruction. The reason that Kandinsky broke ground and is still strongly studied is because he is the father of non-objective abstraction. Many people confuse non-objection with abstraction, for example Marchell Duchamp’s “nude descending a staircase” is an abstraction in a cubist style that had a subject model as many abstract people do since an abstraction is to simplify or reduce a form to its most basic shapes and perhaps replace it with different stylizations. However non-objective or non representational art is not based of any subject matter or model, it is a submission to chance and, as Kandinsky pointed out spirituality. He wanted to create paintings that would respond with the soul and subconscious and many of his works if any inspiration was jazz and other early 20th century music and sound. We as art consumers educators and practitioners must realize the difference in these genres. In closing her painting was nice and was yes an abstraction but was objective and representational a fairy cry from a Kandinsky work.

Miles and miles away of Kandinsky. I really don´t understand the point of this video. Is this really made or official Tate Modern? Do curators and directors of TM think this is serious or helps to understand any form of art, not just abstract art? There´s a ton of planning, thinking and deepness in a Kandinsky, not just a mechanical and superficial skectching.
