How to Paint Lord of The Rings Ranger Captains

In this video I'll show you how to paint Lord of the Rings Ranger Captains - something a little different at a slightly smaller scale! The focus on the video goes a little in places, so thank you for your patience with that! I'll be painting all three in a batch style, and will show you any differences on each model as I come to it.

Thanks for a look at these minis, I’ve always been intimidated by the small scale of them so never really gave them a look even though I love the LoTR trilogy. And as always, Cheers!

Cheers Kyle appreciate it! Yeah they are a bit smaller - and some of the models are nearly 20 years old haha so the sculpts aren't great - looking forward to getting some of the newer ones

@@ThePaintingCoach It will be my original fararmir lost his sword arm (disappearing into the dark void that mini bits fall into ). So ended up getting another. FYI rangers are a bit of a hot army at the moment new sourcebook and forgeworld ranger captains being released.

I use all types but my go to for detail is a W&N Series 7 - they can be pricey so a good alternative is the Rosemary & Co Series 33

@@ThePaintingCoach This particular video is great especially due to the fact that you use Citadel paints for medieval like color scheme. I see around plenty of medieval (like) miniatures tutorials, but majority using VMC or AP. I know there is a conversion chart, but it doesn't always matches perfectly.

You mention in the description you use W&N brushes. Are they the miniature brushes or the water colour?

Thanks for the comment Matt! The water colour ones (should be a link to the correct ones) The miniature ones have a really small paint well and aren't really suitable for what we are doing - they absolutely work but there are better options Just a note as well that I've used W&N for years and have no issue recommending them to any painter - i am trialling some broken toad brushes at the moment as can be seen in this vid - hope that helps!

Hi there!! Really enjoyed this ranger video... I have a couple questions. I hope you can help out with how to get good lighting for painting... I am painting in my basement and am finding out lighting is horrible there... Also what are you using to hold the miniature... I am finding this is problematic for my mid 50s hands.. Thanks!!

I use a wide lamp with a daylighy bulb, as well as a daylight bulb on the main ligh socket - as for the holder, I use a Redgrass Games painting handle 👍🏻

you really need grey seer primer if you dint have it ? is chaos black enough ?

It will be fine just take some extra layers

You will get a slightly darker finish - but it will be ok

No worries - for rank and file you can't go too wrong with wraithbone and skeleton horde - also checkout my Untamed Beasts tutorial as I do several different types of bone in that video
