How to paint on Yupo paper / Guest Tamra Sheline

Today we visit Tamar in her studio in Camas, Washington to discuss her work and techniques on Yupo Paper. When designing she uses a watercolor pencil instead of lead, and many different kinds of salt hymalaian, pink, table, kosher, rock, epson salt, basically any kind you can imagine.
To get really interesting effects she also uses red paper flakes, hydrogen peroxide, sea sponges, regular sponges, make up sponges, you name it, she uses Viva paper towels to lift color out, we discuss translucent and opegue yup and what the difference is and the weight she prefers is 144lb.
Tamar suggests for beginners another wonderful surface to try is mineral paper and for the finer details try any kind of scratch tools, Tamar likes the dental tools that she gets from her dentist. Just a little background: Tamra grew up across the street from me, played with my sons, ( I had 3 boys close to the same age as Tamra & her sister Debi) made dresses for her & her sister; also babysat them. Seeing I didn't have any girls I "adopted" Tamra & Debi as my "daughters". They will always be. Love the girls very much. So happy Tamra has all of this success. LW

A friend of mine just gave me two pieces of YUPO. Not knowing what to do with it, I searched for help, then ran across your video and can't thank you enough. I'm so excited with how the paint behaves on the paper. As demonstrated the fun is in the movement of the water and paint on the paper. Thanks to both of you for sharing!

I did not know you could use watercolor or gouache on Yupo paper until an artist who worked at an art store recommended I try it and boy, was I pleasantly surprised with the effects! I used it just for alcohol inks so this was fascinating to try gouache!

Thanks to both of you, for this fascinating interview! I didn't realize Yupo could be used like this! Beautiful work, love the textured results! I know that framing with a glass was mentioned, but I wonder if there is some sort of spray sealant applied as well, to protect the non porous surface? Thank you!

Fascinating interview with Tamra. I'm guessing the artist of the reference photo of the salmon was probably Ray Troll. He's famous for his fish and I bought two of his T-shirts at his gallery SoHo Coho in Ketchikan, AK. One thing I worry about with Yupo: My paintings seem so fragile when finished, but it doesn't look like she does anything special to protect the surface besides traditional framing?

Hi I know she and her family does a lot fo fishing, so I know she would have plenty of pics, about the framing, tradtional framing would work well, you could ask her directly through her website ;)

Thank you for your kind words. I use many reference photos for each painting. My husband and friends provide me with most of my reference fish photos. I seal my paintings with Krylon Kamar Varnish.
