@@CharlieDIYte Now I've been studying your incredible closeboard fence. Am looking at moving to a site with more land and would like a fence that withstand the hoards who might want to breech it in the coming Ratpocalypse. I only wonder what drugs you use for the superhuman stamina you exhibit.

@@Spherian7 Thanks! Funnily enough I had man flu mid way through making that which is why I look so washed out in the thumbnail! I think it's just a case of knuckling down when a job needs doing, but what takes the real effort is having to film everything and then spend days editing it all into a video!!. I'm really pleased with that fence although in hindsight I should probably have had the arris rails on the inside.

@@Spherian7 Easier for them to get in, harder to get out when I'm chasing them with my gorilla bar 😏 You're right though, that's the main reason for having the arris rails on the inside. That and the weird fact that out of courtesy you're meant to give your neighbour the nice side, even though you've paid for the damn thing!

Thank you , Brilliant product for MDF I’ve been laying new laminate flooring, and big tip, when doing the skirting to the floor run a 3mm rad to face bottom edge, then give it a spray with B I M can spray, Ready for paint, Happy days,, also can you investigate methylated spirit, and spraying it, you started it!! That Zinsser stuff is brilliant. I used to remove stains in a ceiling that kept on coming through the matt emulsion. Also used it on architrave that was smoked over and difficult to sand without damaging it. It's worth every penny.

Which zinnser did you use? Thank you! Having issues with new plaster in my kitchen. Done mist coat, then second coat but paint isn't taking. Which one would be ideal to use? Need it in white

I didnt know about this product but have used several other zinseer products and all been very good. I used Bin on a wooden ceiling many years ago that was covered in thick vanish, a coat of bin and a few coats of water based paint did the trick, 10 years on its still great. Saves so much time using zinseer and time is often money. Going to coat another wooden ceiling that has been painted but need refreshing up and I recently added some patches to ceiling when kitchen was extended into a intregal garage which has been insulated and new floor etc

Any reason why you didn't use the ceiling paint on the wall so you would only have to buy the one BIN product and then wouldn't need a sepearte emulsion if you wanted a white finish?

I used the BIN paint recently on water and tar stains around and old chimney, and it worked perfectly. Thank you for the advice.

A while back, I had a job which involved repainting a very big bungalow in which the elderly lady had smoked (by her own admission) 80 cigarettes a day for over 60 years and the whole place stank of stale smoke and everything had nicotine staining. After 2 sugar soap washes, I used 3 large tins of B.I.N. to seal everything and I mean EVERYTHING. All walls, ceilings doors, frames, skirts etc. 2 days later when the new owner came in, they noticed no smell of nicotine or staining. After applying a base coat over this, I then applied 2 more top coats and job was done and a very happy client to boot!

@@CharlieDIYte Hello there! where this BIN product is shellac/gloss solvent based product can I cover/seal an entire kitchen ceiling using this and then use a water based emulsion such as dulux supermatt white as a top coat? i always thought you couldnt paint directly over solvent based products with waterbased products without needing to sand down the solvent based paint first??

Was struggling to block out a Burnt Amber Wall paint in a Bedroom with white Paint as same was Bleeding through the White, ran out of paint and then bought a Large tub of Dulux White 'Total Cover' Matt for Ceilings and Walls Matt ... Two Coats and the Job is done, fast drying and Killed that Colour, walls look perfect.... may use a Dulux Vinyl Soft Sheen on the Walls White but as it's Just a Spare Bed room rarely used, thinking now that the furniture s back in and the room dressed, i shall leave it .... couldn't say enough about that Total Cover Paint....Great Upload i'm sold on that Zinsser as i have to refurb old MDF Utility Cupboards... your's look Fab...thanks for your Tips and Uploads...

Great videos Charlie. Johnsones trade do their own version of BIN it's around half the price with trade discount. Also Johnsones trade do a fantastic water based stainaway emulsion which is an absolutely suberb product. It actually works,no smell,far easier to roll etc

Hi Charlie. I've been a decorator for nearly 50 years and as you say, B-I-N is a fantastic primer/sealer. Rather than spot prime the stains then paint the whole wall with the B-I-N, we would spot prime, then touch up the B-I-N with the finish wall colour, then re paint the whole wall.Zinsser is far too expensive to use it on a surface that doesn't need it and apart from that emulsion is far easier to apply. Hope this helps

Yes B-I-N is not the cheapest! I believe it is very good on smoke damaged walls plus also treating knots that were not sealed before painting.

You have about 10 years on me Kevin and I completely agree. spot prime with emulsion then recoat the entire wall. or you are just throwing money in the B.I.N 😅 and Charlie should have dug out the fine cracks before he filled them.

Of all the construction trades, painting is the only one that most people will have a go at in their own homes, and consequently they think that painting is a piece of p***. A little knowledge sure is dangerous.😀

@@kevintodd6150 Yes, I have heard that many times, I always reply with yes and have you seen the mess most blokes make in public toilets!, I know what you mean but fortunately for me, my clients won't even cut their own lawns let alone paint a room, I have always aimed at the wealthy market, you get to earn more money and get more time to take pride in your work, so the DIY market makes no odds to me, but I feel your pain brother

Hi Charlie. I’ve just bought a tin on BIN. Do I just use it to paint over the stains parts on my ceiling or do I have to paint the whole ceiling with it?. Because it not cheap, can I just do the stain and use a cheaper undercoat on the rest? Thanks in advance.

Hi Charlie, great video. Do you think i could paint a water damaged ceiling with the zinsser 5 in 1 paint, and then go for a satin finish (dulux) with a different brand for a final coat or two? (or would I then need to prime over the top of the 5 in 1 as a middle man between the 5 and 1 and final satin coats?) Great videos, keep it up! Jonny

Hi Charlie. Didn’t you use the BIN Primer Sealer Stain Killer in the ceiling? Can you not just use the 5-1 on all ceiling and walls. Not sure why you used 2 separate tins.

BIN is great, but had trouble with the Ceiling 5in1 - stains leached through & I had to abandon the product. Water-based would be prone to this I'd have thought. Not really sure why they market for ceilings in particular. 🤔

Hi Charlie, thanks for the vid. Which Zinsser product will hide hair spray stains on my bathroom walls? It has builder grade flat paint applied now.

Zinsser BIN. You'll then probably be ok with the builder grade top coat, but without the BIN beneath you would need a steam or moisture resistant top coat eg a bathroom paint, not a contract matt as with the contract matt the moisture will sink into it every time the room gets damp after a bath or shower and worse case scenario when the walls get wet it will draw out any residual stain in the plaster. Belt and braces, Zinsser BIN with a bathroom paint on top 👍

I had a dried water stain 50cm by 50cm that I cleaned over with water and bleach, then I wiped off the bleach. I let the stained area dry off and I then painted the over the stain with water based anti stain paint which is white. I'm now going to paint the whole wall in yellow. However, should I paint over the white anti stain paint first with a coat of yellow, let it dry and then paint the wall or is it ok to paint the whole wall in yellow and the small area of white anti stain paint won't show through??

From a painter with 38yrs exp, most people will have old oillbased undercoat & that will work 100% never failed me in all that time, any oilbased product works but undercoat will take emulsion better when final coating, its all i use as although Zinseer is good it failed me previously & i only used as i was priming dark wood, undercoat will always be my preferred choice, basically water & oil are opposites that's why it works every time

Thanks for your videos, I have watched and used lots of tips from your other video. Great stuff. Whats the different between BIN and Bulls eye 123 (which I used this lots as primer for wood work and walls)? Also can I use Bulls eye 123 for ceiling too? thanks

You're welcome. BIN is shellac based whereas Bullseye is water based. Yes you can use 123 for ceilings. It also has a biocide in it to protect against mould. There's a great Pocket Guide you can get from Zinsser for free from their website that goes into what each paint can be used for in a lot of detail.

Why was the Leland Emulsion unsuitable for the spot priming over the Gyproc filler? Also, what is the difference between the BIN and the Bullseye? I have a Vinyl Matt and I am looking for something to prime or undercoat some Polyfilla patches before I apply it. Will a Vinyl mat sit better on top of the BIN or the Bullseye? It's a plasterboard stud wall, previously painted.

Only if it can't be watered down. You need to check the back of the tin. The Bullseye is water based whereas the BIN is shellac based.

Excellent video, I have stains coming through my second coat on new plaster (kitchen celling and walls) I know this was video was recorded 3 yeads ago. Wanted to ask if these or any otjer zinsser products would be ideal? As they have the blue tine and yellow tin. And also those spray cans.thank you!! Im going to paint over them in white final coat

After wallpaper removal I have ended up with a damaged wall with different surfaces- patches of original plaster, some old paint (i've scrapped off loose bits) and brick. I have filled the bit down to brick with bonding coat then easi fill so the whole wall is reasonably even but the finish is not good. I don't quite have the skills to skim the wall yet (I'm going to start on a small flat wall first! ). I was thinking of priming the wall with zinseer 123 to hide stains, seal the old paint, highlight the imperfectioms and even out the suction, then use easi filler finish to smooth out patches of the wall (or maybe the whole wall!) To give a good finish. My question- can I use easi filler finish on top of the primer or would I need to pva the whole surface as well? Any advice appreciated but understand it's difficult without seeing the wall! Thanks for knowledge you share😊. Cat

I've renovated a house in a similar state and taken different strategies depending on the state of the walls. I don't know how to plaster with lime, yet, so any skimming I've done is with multi-finish or knauff one-coat after applying watered down SBR/A rather than PVA. If the old lime based plaster is starting to get lots of small holes, or its lost it's key (you'll hear a hollow sound when you tap it) then I've taken the approach of knocking the no key plaster off and using bonding plaster as a first layer. Plastering is a technique, with various tools and very time-sensitive, so if you haven't tried it before, I'd probably advise getting a pro in who will have it done in no time.... If you want to do the whole house... then you might want to learn how to plaster first... its hard work and those 25Kg sacks are not easy to shift around. Another approach is to patch fill, with easy-fill or one coat, and build up the wall, painting it to see how it looks and then filling any other patches in and re-painting. Or, if the walls are reasonably straight wallpaper the walls with lining paper and paint on this. Screwfix sell 1m width x 20m roll that hides lots of imperfections. I'd only bother using zinsser after using an emulsion and see if it covers a stain. If it does not cover the stain then use zinsser on the stained patches only. Hope that helps. A decorator may have a whole load of other useful tricks up their sleeve ;-)

I have been using a spray can of white undercoat primer normally used on cars and available for about £2 a can.. I find its the only quick cheap solution that actually works. give it several quick coats usually dry within 5 minutes per coat and then finish with the Emulsion of choice.

Hi Charlie, I note you use Zinzer quite a bit. Zinzer Bin Bulls Eye1-2-3 says its suitable for exterior use. I have used it inside and I want to use it to prime an external window sill, but I have a doubt. What do you think? Have you used it outside? Thanks.

Hi Steve. No I've only used Bullseye 123 internally to prime MDF kzfaq.info/get/bejne/at-cd8iCvdyVm2Q.html and wasn't blown away by its performance to be honest. I wouldn't use it externally, myself. I'd probably go with an oil based primer. The other thing to consider these days is flexible systems bit.ly/3yzBD0c The soft wood windows I had installed on the south face of our house last literally a matter of months, so I would probably favour a flexible primer and top coat system bit.ly/3yzBD0c although I might also investigate something like this, going forward bit.ly/3mQ5nUH

What would you recommend for pva stains on wall... they're streaks coming through the white emulsion..only done one coat of Dulux trade supermatt so far but don't wanna waste the paint

That's a tricky one Adam. Best thing I can suggest is a second coat (which you've got to do anyway) and hope that the enhanced coverage of the second coat covers it.

@@CharlieDIYte thanks I did do another coat but was still coming through so applied a oil based undercoat to the problem areas due to the advice from some forums....just don't know wether to sand the undercoat? or just paint over the undercoated areas first with emulsion and then the whole wall or just do the whole wall with emulsion now?

I painted some stains with a gloss paint to block the stains which it did. When I painted over it with the finish emulsion the spots painted with gloss are seeping through the emulsion where I painted. How do I fix that ?

You'll need a top coat that is compatible with the gloss.

Just used zin BIN Recently around the chimney breast had some damp stains had to scrape the old paint away as it was coming away from the wall and used 3 coats of this zin then painted 3 coats of Matt paint and a week later the stain is starting to come through again. Any ideas anybody?

My coving keeps soaking in my paint. If i use this will this fix the problem or am i on the wrong track? Appreviate your help if you can. I have too much coving in my house to keep putting millions of coats on it

Zinzer 123 a water based primer will stop your top coat soaking in.

Thanx for some great , informative videos . I have a ceiling stain ( from previous old damp chimney which is no longer there ) , which continues to bleed through everything , even Zinsser 123 . Zinsser says water must still be present , but it is not . Oil primer is recommended by diy 'ers , so might try that. But very disappointed in Zinsser . Keep well

Yes I wouldn't recommend 123 for something like that, being water based. BIN on the other hand, being shellac based would be a good primer for the oil based to coat.

Friends recommend oil based primer to try now , supposedly that works , but thought BIN 123 would . Perhaps plasterboard ( 70's ) was too badly affected , worse when humid ! I tried the Ceiling Pro in our bathroom, which had an old water stain from a boiler leak. Really nice finish overall, but sadly it has not effectively covered the water stain (despite Zinsser telling me it would), so I am going to have to try something else to seal that again. Also they claim a 1 hour recoat time but mine was still wet after two hours, maybe because of high humidity in the room.

Hmm, was the ceiling completely dry before you started? You could try Coverstain or BIN and then over paint with the 5 in 1.

I used the BIN Zinsser shellac based sealer. Then I applied emulsion on top of it. I can see the shade of the sealer. Any idea how to fix it?

You'll need another coat. If it's a cheap contract emulsion you may need 3.

How do you paint over an eggshell finish on a ceiling? Will zinsser prime it so matt paint adheres?

Give the surface a wipe with since sugar soap solution. Check there's no grease on it with some masking tape - if it's tacky (sticks a bit) you've degreased well, and then save the surface with a 180 or 240 grit sand paper - just to take the shiny surface off. Wipe or vac the dust off, then you can repaint.

Charlie, thanks for all your vids. I think Ive watched them all now. Every one has been well made, interesting and incredibly useful. Regarding Bin, are you aware that you should thin it down with Meths, especially if not used for a while. I’ve not seen it mentioned but I may have missed you doing that. I keep two tins going. The one I work from and the stock tin. I tip what I want into the used tin and put a little meths in to take it back to its original consistency. Just an idea for you to try perhaps if not doing so already.

Thanks mate. That explains a lot! Particularly in the summer, BIN becomes almost unusable, because it's dried before you can get it off the brush, and I left the lid off another tin for a couple of hours and it's never been the same since but your idea would sort that. Where did you learn about this, out of interest?

@@CharlieDIYte I’m a painter and decorator and it’s just things you pick up from others and trial and error. Have you tried BULLSEYE 123 from zinseer as well. This is a water based primer/sealer/stain cover etc. and also very good. Not that it matters but if I’m doing a water based system I stick to all water based. Not that you have to, just my little ocd thing. Feel free to ask if you have a painting queries. If I can answer I will.

As a bald man, don’t forget to wear a hat whilst painting a ceiling! Oh and the tin foil over the roller tray is genius - I’ve thrown away so many after the old paint chips off in to the new paint eventually

Paint tray inserts / liners are plastic and can be reused and it saves on wasting aluminium foil, which can’t be recycled if it’s covered in paint. Just a suSTAINable thought.

Probably prime with BIN and then a top coat of your choice. Or if you're after just one white coat, the Ceiling Pro 5 in 1.

Hi Charlie - I've been using No Nonsense spray stain blocker and the yellow stain still keeps bleeding though, would these products be better?

Yes I would have thought so. It's the shellac in BIN which works so well. Just check the no nonsense doesn't contain shellac. You'll know if it does because it smells like nail varnish.

I used this BIN on nicotine stained walls and ceiling, after everything else failed. It was brilliant. However, it let me down on a water stained ceiling even after 4 coats. In the end I used oil based dulux gloss, and that worked a treat!. I've no idea why BIN failed though?

I have painted a patch on the wall under my window with BIN, now i really cant seem to cover it, ive painted it two coats of grey matt emulsion in the past, then primed it and covered it with 3 coats of white emulsion, still no luck though.

That's bizarre, Shane. Is the emulsion very cheap contract matt? You might need something with a bit of vinyl in it. That Ceiling Pro featured in the video would cover it in one coat.

What would you recommend for a base coat before painting a room? Just to cover the old paint and to stop filler from flashing through.

If it's just flashing you're worried about rather than stains, I'd be inclined to just buy a good quality emulsion that has excellent coverage - I recently repainted my kitchen with Johnstone's Flat Matt. The walls were incredibly grubby and it covered everything in one coat. Make sure you prime the filled areas first though with a mist coat (50:50 water paint mix). Assuming you're in the UK, Google your local Johnstone's Decorators Centre. Can't recommend their paints highly enough!

@@CharlieDIYte Thanks for the reply Charlie! Yeah I'm in the UK (N.I Specifically) thought it would be better to use an actually Undercoat / Primer rather than just a bog standard matt white emulsion. Wouldn't it be more expensive this way because you're paying for the pigment? I dunno.

@@timh5529 Generally there shouldn't be any need to undercoat an emulsion, unless as with this video, you're covering stains. Also it's going to make the job a lot more expensive. Yes, with a bog standard matt emulsion the coverage isn't going to be great although I use them (specifically Armstead contract matt) to water down when I'm doing the mist coat on new plaster, as, when you're watering down by as much as 50% you don't want to be using an expensive emulsion! Bespoke colours are always more expensive than the stock colours (the stock colours being for example white, magnolia). However if you were to buy a good quality Flat Matt like this bit.ly/2Tgmsbn or a vinyl matt like this bit.ly/2uFBv49 (I've never used Decorating Warehouse by the way but it's a useful retailer as it has the prices) both these Johnstones' paints have excellent coverage so you should be fine.

B.i.n is amazing. We use 500 litres a year prob more. When we wash mould down put this on and stops it grow back from with in as it alkaline based. Also dries so quick....

Hi Charlie Why not just use bin on the ceiling as both wall and ceiling use the same emulsion? Expensive to buy 2 different products. I presume ceiling pro is not shellac based? Cheers Russell

Hi Russell, you could certainly do that. I think the point of the Ceiling Pro is that typically people paint their ceilings White (it only comes in Brilliant White) and so they've come up with something that blocks stains and serves as a top coat all in one, and the coverage is excellent. If however your ceiling is a bespoke colour then yes I completely agree, BIN as a primer then your usual top coat would be the way to go. BIN can also be tinted with up to 16ml of universal tinter per litre, which would help with hiding the BIN in one coat - useful if you've got a large area to prime, and you can get it tinted at somewhere like Brewers, or any decorator centre that sells BIN and also has paint mixing machines.

@@russellmyers9013 It is confusing and I've said this to Zinsser. Sorry I forgot to say, Ceiling Pro is not shellac based. You've got Allcoat water based and the Allcoat solvent based - which has additional stain blocking properties. The Allcoat solvent version might be your best bet, thinking about it, but it comes down to price really. 5litres of the Allcoat solvent is about £76, which is actually probably marginally cheaper than two 5 litre tins of the Ceiling Pro (£45 each approx), and BIN is a whopping £89 for 5 litres. I guess Ceiling Pro is more aimed at the domestic market.

I'm painting a crematory warehouse oil smoked covered I am washing the wall residue I was going to use kilz or Zinsser. It's a working area so smell may be a problem.

Zinnser 123 is fantastic as a primer undercoat but found it a bit hit and miss as a stain blocker. I’d go for a solvent based sealer like BIN. Nothing worse than having to repaint an entire wall after the stains bleed thought again

The bad thing about my ceiling. It’s the popcorn ceilings throughout entire house; so, doing repairs & repainting.....is a pain😠. Not sure why anyone would want those kinds of ceiling nowadays.....they are horrible & “collect” dust/dirt.

8:29 I used Zinsser and i had to paint 4 or more coats of paint over it to hide it. Kind of an issue really!

Not really, and it was 3 coats not 4. More a combination of using a cheap contact matt emulsion (I've never used Leyland and was really disappointed with it) and as I said in the video not applying the BIN as consistently as I should have, partly because of applying too sparingly with a mini roller. A good quality paint like Johnstone's Flat Matt would have nailed it in one coat.

I first used BIN a few years ago to deal with the nicotine smell in a rented bungalow. My friend and I used two large cans and obliterated the smell. It's fantastic stuff. I now keep a selection of brushes in a jar of meths covered with a thick plastic bag and a strong rubber band and I just use them and return them to the jar when finished. If a brush dries out, soak it in meths for an hour and it's back to normal.

It saves the paint tray for the next job, which is useful for solvent based paints -as cleaning the paint tray with meths for shellac paints like BIN or white spirit for other oil based paints is a massive pain.

Finally someone who knows, never failed me in 37yrs as a painter and decorator, any oilbased paint works as there opposites but undercoat takes emulsion better as it's slightly porous, don't brush it on as it will stand out against the roller finish , just use a mini roller
