I love how you don't care how long your videos are. I like seeing it all and not a sped up version with no explanation or when people skip around like crazy and don't explain a single thing. Thank you for all your hard work and wanting to teach us, rather than just soak up all the money from views on a 10 minute video. 🖤

Thanks for taking the time and making this for us. I enjoyed it very much! I haven't been able to paint for a couple weeks due to illness, so I'm a bit "rusty" myself. hahaha (sorry, couldn't resist that pun) These are just the type of practice paintings I need to get back in the swing of things. Perfect timing on this too, as I started working on your Sept. 2019 Critique Club lesson "Rusty Porthole & Weathered Rope" before I had to take a break. Testing out different saltwater ratios, different papers and different paints for that lesson was/is fun and challenging. However, I discovered that painting the rust in general was the most challenging part, so this was video was very helpful.

Lindsay Weirich would this be an occasion to perhaps use salt? Not sure just a thought. I love old locks and keys, old gambrel barns, and farm machinery, it takes me back to the farm, my childhood, collecting the eggs from the chicken nests, taking it to the kitchen for my Mom. The wonderful breakfasts she made everyday, we were not well off, in fact rather poor, but thanks to her we had good food, warm biscuits, gravy, sausage, omelets, scrambled, fried, and bacon and cheese. And she always worked a full time job as well as taking care of all of us. It is amazing what your painting brought to mind, and how it took me back in time, miles and miles from where I am now. Thank you for sharing your time and talents, and for the memories you brought to me today.

Sure, you can do that in the first wash and let it dry completely. It's be better om a large area tho as the effect would get lost on a small area by the time you're done.

Supper excited to see this, watched while I did my housework! Lol vacuuming was fun I pad in one hand a vacuum in the other still it’s done! Yep you can get the brushes here in NZ in fact everything at the moment in your Amazon shop I can buy from Amazon Australia 🇦🇺 know this as I just ordered the brushes the other day, along with Ohuhu marker book (the square one so excited) and some Strathmore coloured pencil paper (can’t find Strathmore here in the South Island at all) I know went a little crazy but had so much fun, um went for the Rosa paints you’ve been using but unfortunately these are sold out how ever they were available for NZ and also quite cheep! Um sorry back to tutorial, so gonna sit down and give this a go shortly, have looked at the port hole with the rope on Critic Club but still a little nervous about using salt water with my paints think I’m gonna give this a go maybe this weekend. These are great watch out water colour sketch book here I come! Thank you for such a supper cool tutorial.

Painting starts with drawing even if you are just sketching a picture. Sadly (?), I am not a person who can simply paint a picture without drawing it first. Edit I don't know if you would recommend this - I had a dark spot which I made lighter by adding a slightly wet brush then blotting it with a little piece of Kleenex or paper towel. In a recent artist trading card class, I used my Elegant Writer to make a card. I use watercolor paper to make my atcs, so I felt comfortable with adding a bit more water and getting more colors coming out than just blue.

How do you learn about colors and pigments? Like what colors are staining, granulating, why some colors bloom and spread to other colors more than others? Can you do a video on this? ❤️

I think I might bore you to tears if I did 😆 but all the info is usually on the label then if you see an unfamiliar pigment you can look it up. Handprint is a great resource in watercolor pigments. You will eventually memorize them.

Yes, Inliquidcolor is where I learned about pigments. Denise's videos are the best for pigment info!

A whole lot of us will now look at rusty things differently, with love and running to get our paints and paper 😛. Beautiful. Lindsey did you make this Arches watercolour sketchbook by yourself? I don’t think I have seen their sketchbooks.

So fascinating to watch you take plain paper and make it look like rust. Amazing talent. Thanks Lindsay. I enjoy these videos. I guess you're aware of some of the very long commercials. Does it help to watch a portion of them?. Some of the 20 minutes are awful and I can't watch them . Just curious. TFS

Yes, a 30 second watch counts as an ad view. I don't know why they put 20 minute ones on there except that is it a legal way for other KZfaqr to buy views.

@@thefrugalcrafter Thanks Lindsay for clarifying. I've always wanted to ask you cause I want you to benefit. So many of those long commercials are dreadful. Watching the othe rust tutorial now.

Hi Lindsay. What size is your handmade Arches sketchbook? I’m trying to figure the most optimal way to cut down sheets to make my own sketchbook. Thanks. Lovely painting today!
