This is great! I’ve seen other tutorials advicing against mixing complementary colors because they make “muddy” colors. But they are actually good for creating shadows! Thanks! ❤️

If you're painting a red barn, you should use the colors next to red on the color wheel. So the light side of the barn would be red-orange and the shadow side would be red violet.

What if you are painting let’s say a white flower… how do you go about choosing a color for casting shadow?

You would use yellow mixed with the purple to create the shadow on a purple box. You will need to experiment with the ratio and exact version of yellow that makes the shadow look correct to you. Also, don't mix on your paper, you mix the color in your pan.

You should use red violet for the light side and blue violet for the shadow side. The colors on each side of violet (purple) on the color wheel.
