Just from the thumbnail, these are legit some of the best looking 28mm scale heads I’ve ever seen. I wouldn’t say “stylized” necessarily, but they have sooooo much character on each head. It’s really astonishing work!

This is insane, Erik! Literally in a 15 minutes you have painted single head in really a exhibition quality level (yes, I know that eyes and mouth were not painted yet but still - it's much faster and better than I could do in a several hours and I'm not a total newbie)! I think videos like this are really precious pieces in the internet and moreover - you share it for free! It's really freaking insane! Thank you from the deepest parts of my heart for such priceless gift!

This is absolutely incredible. I’ve been trying to move away from the recess shading for faces but never found a resource showing me how. Clearly a lot of skill that goes unspoken here in mixing and thinning paints. The organic process you use is exactly the sort of painting that is most enjoyable - free flowing, instinctive and (in my case) not putting too much pressure on yourself! Thanks Erik for the time and effort you put in here.

Great video, absolute treat for people who like painting faces. Super exciting to see how other people have a go at one of the "less liked" parts of painting miniatures.

Painting heads with exposed skin used to be a nightmare till I got the hang of it when I realized the application is what matters the most than the ''recipe''. Great job Erik!!
@erik_swinsonАй бұрын
I try to explain this a lot, you will never see recipes on my channel.
@vasileiosandreanidis2153Ай бұрын
@@erik_swinson To me recipes work in things where each step is one and done whereas when painting minis there is a lot of back and forth so they automatically become obsolete.

This is fantastic. I try to teach very similar concepts to new and intermediate painters. A lot of miniature painters get stuck on which colors or which brand of paints to use, or which technique to apply. The tools and the how-to's aren't as important as understanding two concepts: 1. Shapes/volumes 2. Contrast appropriate to the material you're trying to represent For skin, in particular, you want it to "pop" at this scale, but you don't want to outline features with hard, dark lines. Skin is one continuous organ, remember, so subtlety is the name of the game!

Absolutely stunning work, I’ll definitely going to try replicate your step by tutorial 👏🏻💪🏻 In the video, are you using a wet palette? And what kind of paints are you using? Looks like they dry slowly, and gives you time to place the paint before it dries. It’s one of my biggest issues with paint, drying out when I paint. And what type of brush are you using? Size etc 😅

This is one of the best tutorials on painting heads that I have seen. I will definitely try this technique of not painting everything in one dark color and trying to layer up. I have found that by the time you get to the last highlight the paint is too think and starts to look lumpy due to the micro size of the head. What you can get away with on larger scale doesn't work on a "canvas" this small. I would also love to know what primer you used. I usually use a dark or black primer because white has a tendency to need to go on too thick to look smooth or leaves a texture if sprayed lightly.
@erik_swinsonАй бұрын
Always have to keep the scale in mind! I used black airbrush primer and zenithal with white ink

@erik_swinson been slowly going through your videos as they're phenomenal in how you approach your artwork. I did want to ask though how is your camera positioned? you look to be able to get pretty close with your magnifiers on and not accidentally get in frame.

@@erik_swinson Appreciate the reply. I have my camera set similarly but kept getting my magnifiers in shot! moved the arm up and forward a bit more now. looks like stepping back and not trying to get the camera as close as possible was far better.

Hey Erik, thanks for the video. When you’re painting female faces on 32mm figures do you take a similar approach to what you do on the ‘Lady Knight’ and ‘Shiv’ videos and just replicate that on a smaller scale, or does the small scale require you to increase the contrast far beyond what you do on a larger scale even though female faces are generally less contrasted than male’s?
@erik_swinsonАй бұрын
You have to exaggerate the make up (like lips etc) to make them appear more feminine

Okay I wanna say 3 things: 1. The first 5-10 min I was like holy shit that can’t be this dude must have eagle eyes. But you then turned to put on magnifiying glasses and I was like phew thanks man, I thought my eyes were just dogshit 🤣 2. the tips on those brushes are amazing! What brands are these? Is the white one an Artis opus and the black one something like a W&N / Rosemary Co.? 3. I thoroughly and deeply enjoy(ed) - I’m 1 1/2 h in - watching this was not only immensely educating (!) it’s also absolutely amazing to see this in real-time no speed ups no nothing. And I wanna thank you for that! I‘ve never seen someone have a process like that and it’s definitely something I’m going to try out. Your faces look amazing brother! ❤

Haha thanks, yes I need glasses to paint stuff that small. White brushes are Artis Opus and the black "dagger" shaped brush is from Kimera.

Can you tell me the colors that you used on this video or this is not the way? Thank you so much.
@erik_swinsonАй бұрын
I will not, because it wouldn’t be helpful. Because it’s not step by step, you wouldnt have the same ratio of mixture or the same dilution. The idea is to search for the correct tone. The name on the bottle isn’t important and skin tones are very diverse.

Female faces are a completely different animal than male faces. In fact "Space Marine Faces" are a thing on their own. They have extremely exaggerated features. I've spend hundreds, maybe thousands of hours learning to paint marine heads, I can't paint squat on a female face so far. Nothing political going on here, purely technical (I reckon)
@erik_swinsonАй бұрын
@@BSJDynasty they are quite different, I’ve talked a lot about it, but on larger scales
@philclayton5163Ай бұрын
@@BSJDynasty completely agree, I had a few harlequins, amongst other female miniatures, I was quite happy with the resulting paint job at the time but now realise my efforts did them little justice as characters. The features were more subtle in comparison, but this further reinforces the dig I made (at Games Workshop/ Warhammer caving in to Amazon). Female miniatures have a place in the 40k universe, sorry I cant say any more as I distracts from Erics magnificent channel content.
