How to Paint Straight Lines on Textured Walls | Works EVERY TIME

In this video, I demonstrate how to paint straight lines on textured walls. It can be very frustrating to take the time to tape everything off before painting just to find it didn't work later when the tape is peeled back. This technique solves that problem and I used it during my basement renovation project. Let me add that I did not create this technique. I hope you find this video helpful in your upcoming painting projects.

If you don’t want to mess with the caulk just seal the tape with the paint colorthat is on the trim that way what ever bleeds under the tape is the same color then when it dries go over the tape with the wall color and then the tape is sealed with the color of the trim resulting in the same crisp lines. ( be painting professionally for 25 years) cheers

I got dizzy reading this! But if I got it right, then it won’t work because I only am painting one accent wall, don’t have any trim paint. Only grey for accent, other walls and trim is white

Thank you! I wish my contractor (who does all the painting himself) knew this technique. Now we have to re-do the edges ourselves. But we will use this technique!

Seriously thank you! I just moved to VA & textured walls are apparently super common here too. (Not so much in AL where I’m from). Anyways, I taped off our walls to paint & found this to be an issue too so I love this idea!

Just painted my (Colorado) basement, textured walls. Absolute nightmare trying to join two contrasting colors. I’m actually going to start skimming the walls to smooth them out. More work, but textured walls are too 1980s. 👍👍

Did you do this? Skim coat the texture? There must be a reason for the texture here. Even new homes have it.

Pro painter here, we do the same thing. Only thing we do different is use clear caulk.

Are all caulk the same or there are different types that paint will cover one type of caulk better than the other?

@@wuufer001 To accomplish what was done in the video most caulking will do. There are different caulking for many different things ex. Color, interior/exterior, material specific(wood/concrete/plastic). For most painting applications that are on drywall or wood, your only factor you would have to consider is if its purpose is for interior or exterior. Note some caulking can't be painted on, those normally are for sealing wet areas like bathrooms, so check your product description before applying. The reason I said we use clear caulk is because when you remove the tape after caulking and painting there is a slight chance you can leave a white line, whereas with the clear it is clear.

I definitely agree with Matt. Additionally, I would add that there are cheaper caulks out there that are not name brand that will shrink and crack over time. I used DAP Alex Plus and got great results but like Matt’s comment of trying a clear caulk for future projects. I would stick to the name brands for your painting projects though. I accidentally used non-paintable tape - disaster! Any suggestions on how to get this caulk off the wall? Peeling it by hand is not working very well.

Do you have to use fast drying caulk?

No. I like that brand and have used it many times in the past. For large areas, I just complete the caulk/painting process in sections since it has a drying time of about 20 minutes. You could use a caulk that wasn’t fast drying though if you like.

how long do you have to wait to paint after you apply the caulk?

You want to paint immediately after applying caulk because you don’t want the caulk to dry or the tape won’t peel off cleanly.

A technic I used is instead of cock I used the paint that I taped over so when it leaks through it's the paint that matches that side. Once it was dry I painted the other side with the other paint. So I used it in place of cock just had to wait for it to dry to paint over with the new paint. I painted large black lines in her room so make it look like a sophora store.
