In this quick video I show you a super easy and striking way of painting a sword using the TMM or True Metallic Metal style, that is painting like NMM but using actual metallic paints.
Let's get cracking!

I don't know what it is about your videos, but you're one of the only people I watch where I "get it" when I watch. And your use of contrast paints is amazing and has helped me SO much. I'm not a "bad" painter, but I've been struggling a lot lately with getting my highlights and washes right and I find the way you use the contrast paints just helps me so much. Thank you 1 million times. You're a legend!

I think it's because 1, I'm AWESOME, and 2 I work very hard behind the camera to develop videos that are easy to follow, and if I cannot find a super easy way to do something I don't show it on camera because the people that would be able to pull it off, already know that stuff. Also THANKS, comments like this really make my day mate

Took a couple of attempts but this recipe is working for me now and looking good! Initially my Contrast glazes were quite splodgey and bad, probably due to my novice brush control, but I found diluting the Gryph Charger Grey with contrast medium made it easier to work with and I could work up with several thin layers adding more Contrast to the mixture as I went. At some point I will try using pure Gryph Charger Grey again which should make the process faster.

Thank you! Very useful tutorial, clearly explained and demonstrated. I've a figure on the painting table ATM that I will try this with this afternoon. If you wanted to make this video even better, add something at the end to show the changes you would make if the sword blade was held horizontally, and how you would place the shadows and highlights on more complicated blades like hammers and axes.
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures 4 жыл бұрын
That is a great suggestion, in terms of the blade being horizontal, I would just do the same, the metal pants will take care of the effect. That being said I'm lazy

Usually most people paint Gold the " regular / basic " way or go all the way an paint NMM , but i haven't seen many painters trying to apply the principles of NMM to make smooth TMM gradients and boost contrasts between colours . I think you could make something totally sick that way ! :D

that looks great. i use the metal colour paints too, i find to stop them being so shiney that they just glint from black to white at a lot of viewing angles i mix in a small amount of non metallic paint, like a mid tone grey into their mid tone steels, that way it still has that metallic shine but the range is reduced and theres no angles where it disappears into an almost black.
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I just use them as basecoats and then use inks or contrast to shade them and other metallics for the highlights, that way the shine is reduced and I can control the contrast better but yours is algo a very neat trick indeed

I don't use to comment, but this time I have to do it. During the last months I have been trying to paint swords on a TMM way, but withouth as good results as in your video, and of course investing much more time. I'm a huge fan of Scale75 metallic colors, so the way I did this was combining the 2 metallic colors you mention plus the "black metal" for the shadow parts. Watching your video I have 2 questions: -The contrast paint for the dark areas can be replaced by the old GW blue glaze? -On your explanation you use 2 Scale75 silver colors for the lights, and a Citadel one for the base coat. Do you have a Scale75 silver alternative for that color? The aforementioned Black Metal is too dark for that in my opinion, and the next one on the scale, the Trash Metal, is too dirty. Thank you so much for those easy videos!!
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment I really appreciate it. - No you can't really substitute Gryph-charger for Guilliman Blue, Guilliman is WAY to blue, a mix of Guilliman and Nuln Oil would be a better match. But I highly recommend you give it a go using glazes of something like Incubi Darkness, using regular acrylics works very well, but you need to thin them down A LOT. Any Dark Sea Blue kind of colour will work fine. That being said I'm I love with Contrast Paints for this kind of work, they are amazing. - for the Basecoat here I use Vallejo Metal Color Silver, the metal color range is the best basecoating metallic paint ever made, absolute magic. As for a substitute, it's actually quite close to Heavy Metal in shine, so I would just use that. Hope that helps!

I am always amazed by the way you mastered contrast paints so fast as they are technical paints IMO. Do you think it would work the same way with your homemade GW glaze recipe or even thinned down aethermatic blue or blue ink ?
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures 4 жыл бұрын
The thing with the old glazes or my recipe is that you don't go dark enough, there is a limit to how dark the result will be, contrast paints can get extremely dark when layered over and over again, that being said any ink will work just fine turned into a glaze, as would btw, any acrylic paint, I've done it with abbadon black, or Incubi Darkness before, it's just more complicated because you have to turn it into a glaze while I just use Gryph-charger out of the pot, I love that paint. Hope that helps!

@JuanHidalgoMiniatures
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures 4 жыл бұрын
Well, that is very difficult to say, you can do this with any ink, and with any acrylic that is a very dark sea blue kind of colour. But you would need to thin those down to a very thin glaze while the Gryph-charger you can use right out of the pot. You can also try using Coelia Greenshade, that might work! You would probably need more layers but I think it's probably the best option

What contrast color would you use to do gold TMM?
@srsgoblin
@srsgoblin 4 жыл бұрын
I use Guilliman Flesh kind of as a wash, thinned about 1:1 with water to weaken it a bit. I've had pretty good results from that. In your deepest shadows, you might want to go with a brown. Not sure which one Is use, however I would probably go about 1:2 ratio contrast with water for it else the brown will overpower the gold completely.
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures 4 жыл бұрын
I personally use straight up Guilliman Flesh, I actually have a video on Gold armour, go check it out. If you want deeper shadows, I love Fyreslayer Flesh and then Cygor Brown

What is your recipe for Scale75 metallics and glaze medium?
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures 4 жыл бұрын
If i don't clearly say anything I used just water, which was this case. As for the rest of Scale75 paints, I don't use them so I cannot help you there but I would be very surprised if you couldn't use just water with them as well

Wow incredible. Just one question. Are you not terrified of using metallics on those lush Raphael 8404 brushes ? I've been told never to as kills your brushes and I'm to scared to now as I can't afford to keep buying them 😭

No I'm not, I don't notice any difference on how long they last but don't feel bad for using synthetics for the metallics

Can Space Wolves Grey be a sub for the Gryph Charger?
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures 4 жыл бұрын
No, not for this. Space Wolves is more opaque and it won't look good. But you can thin down Black Templar and get a similar result but without the blue tint
