How to Paladin TANK in Classic WoW | 40 man raids, 20 man raids, dungeons

Here is a fast tutorial on how to tank as a protection paladin in Classic wow.
Tutorial starts with how to tank dungeons and advances into how to tank 40 man raids.
I do not go into extreme details in how every talent or skill works as it is not needed considering you need to lean some stuff your self as paladin tanking is more preventinve than reactive.

Doing us prot pallies justice here dude! Love it! Few notes, I’d recommend getting benediction and 4/5 parry on talents as that mana and mitigation helps a lot, also use rank 1 holy shield, uses less mana, still increases block chance, threat from it is less, but more for kings on bosses, and last but not least, don’t turn your back on those mobs xD Keep up the good work!

Here is the simples layout I could have come up with to explain how tanking with a paladin works. I have forgotten to mention to use retribution aura, as it does holy damage also and it is essential in tanking mobs! What do you think will the same be vialbe in Naxx?

I go 0/19/32, my guild lets me off tank, i dont have nearly as much gear as our main tank but i can hold my own. If my healers are great and its a threat race I use a 2h weapon and the burst threat from SoC is super nice, combo'd with exo and GBoK, its effective at Naxx and more than viable. Sometimes its optimal as paladins have major oh shit buttons. I will almost never ever let myself die unless ive exhausted all my cd's. Keep a major mana directly beside where you have LoH, keep GBoK directly beside BoP, and get real good at flashshielding yourself with divine shield(popping it just for an micro second at extreme low HP to give that little moment for a healer to save you then removing it as to not have the boss run wild). Flashshielding a dps thats about to die, or thats busted threat with BoP is very nice as well.

Also, my gear for this has no spellpower, its all Stam/defense str. Warrior off pieces basically.

I always put seal of wisdom of trash mobs I’m focusing which also generates some extra aoe threat, and seal of the crusader on bosses for extra single target threat

My method is a slightly bit different, but it operates on the same premise as fury prot. Since pals cant dual wield, i use a 2h weapon with seal of the command. My talent spread is 0/19/32. Higher dps with imp RF is very nice, a seal of command proc can gen a bunch of threat. GBoK because it never misses resists and alwaya generates threat. Ive had tremendous success with this build, i never have to ask my dps to slowndown or have a delayed start. Maybe sometimes on a boas fight when i want to be sure, but its nice. I also get improved blessing of protection because this is your "taunt", if someone busts threat you remove them from the threat table for 6 seconds and give you time to catch up and maybe save that dps life. Direct message me if youd like to more about my method, its an entirely different way to do it , but ive had tremendous success.

I’d love to see your gear for that setup. I play on a pserver that has the old beta ability “Holy Strike” enabled. It causes your next melee hit to do 100% holy damage. When I’m tanking a boss, I JoC, SoR, Holy Strike with a big 2 hander and then go to sword and board for mitigation. That big dump of 1000+ holy damage keeps the boss from losing interest for awhile.

Looking at gear T2 and nice drops. I just hit 60. Thinking I'll go 4 soulforge set mixed with bits from aq20/zg/5mans until I get lucky at bwl(I'll have to heal).

Yeah, that is how I got the gear from BWL, pug heal with solo Soft Ress on T2 gear. Tedious but worth it :)

what do you think using two freezing bands to generate threat?

I use 2 fire ress bands for bwl and 2 nature ress for AQ40 and have no issuea with maintaining aggro. I personaly think pala will be good on Saph as you can go frost ress gear with almost no aggro lose

hi! I am leveling a Paladin, I don't have Blessing of Kings yet. Can I spam Blessing of Kings on dungeons to generate aggro?

Hi Juan You can but it will generate just 120 aggro per cast and not more, and that is not mana efficient at all. To tank dungeons you need to use Consencrate and Seal of Judgment. And to not have issues with mana, buy "of the eagle gear" (stamina + int)

@@severrag8814 Hello. I am glad you replied. I see, I guess Kings is more for Dungeons. I was picking gear with strength, stamina, spirit. Well, another quick shop to the AH to get an INT STAMINA set instead. BTW I really enjoyed the video.

Two more things, put 30% less agro generatin on the party and fiery enchant on a fast weapon while leveling helps a lot

You need to spec holy and get conc 1st with spell power gear and yeah but it feels realy janky due to you stoping and drinking a lot

I was thinking about that when I was making the video. Due to the high armor and HP defense was not such a massive factor, crushing blows did not do much same as crits. Ofc the more defense the better, but as I did not feel any setbacks I decided to leave that one out and for a personal preferance

unfortunatelly people doesn't take prot paladin seriously and you will be the 2nd tank all the time if you're raid or guild doesn't trust you...

Thats why I have started slow. I started with tanking dungeons, than UBRS, than ZG and AQ20, jumped to MC and last week I have tanked BWL. All you need is to build the trust slowly. Also I was linking my videos to ppl who did not trust into pala tanking and in most cases it worked and the entire raid had a blast.

@@Cobalt_027 AQ40 has shown the power of prot pala tanking. I have the best AoE threat on trash and can rock full mitigation gear on bosses and still have insane threat so people do not need to be carefull if e.g. a mage gets an insane ignite. The biggest strength of prot pala in AQ40 is on twins as you can tank in full shadow ress gear and you get insane threat when the teleport happens. Viscidus I'd say is another boss where prot palas shine better than warrs as you take really low damage from posion as you resist a lot due to full mitigation gear. There are a lot of videos of prot palas tanking AQ40 if you are interested.
