Love this video. Simple but relevant and overlooked. As an operator of old heavy bikes without reverse, this rider is always aware of parking placement and reading the terrain of the parking space or spaces or parking lot. Observing all of this helps when making choices about how to park and place the bike in a space so that it can be seen and is also prepositioned to get out at departure. You mentioned uphill and pull ins. This rider faced that situation one day where it made more sense to ride into the space uphill and then allow the bike to gently roll back out of the space via gravity with little effort other than a little pressure on the front brake while walking out. Hope plenty of people see this and learn to be more cognizant of the techniques and forethought involved in motorcycle parking. Thanks again Rich !!!!

All good points bro. I usually back into a spot, because it is safe when pulling out. Most of my closest calls have been in parking lots, because some idiots think that rules of the road don’t apply there. Be safe bro.

I know that I'm a couple of years late but thank you for this great video. I get very nervous in some of these busy parking lots where cars are going this way and that. I love the strategy of starting the turn on the space before and then back straight in. Not having to wiggle the bike around to line up with the middle of the space is great. I'm going to practice this tomorrow.

Bravo! Great information video on parking. I've seen a couple of guys get their bike knocked off the Side Stand by cars not seeing their bike soon enough assuming the space is empty. Of course they never stay around or leave a note either. I generally pull up perpendicular to the parking space right where you would enter it, and I go one further space beyond (the length you pull ahead differs with the wheelbase of your motorcycle), then I hop off and turn the bars full lock degrees and back it in. Granted I'm relatively strong and my bike is only around 500lbs so this might not work for someone with a big 900lb touring motorcycle but for me this works great because I don't have to butt myself into the lane of the parking lot and people don't have to wait for me to duck walk backwards into a spot.

Ugh! Parking......Why do I go into panic mode? I always end up at an angle when trying to back in with my bike. So I end up jumping off so my Husband can finish parking it for me. I do not like to be a pain so I usually just pull in when I can. Excellent motorcycle subject! Thank you Rich! :)

Don't give up Karen. Just don't give up. Do it anyway even though you don't like it or quite understand it yet. If you keep letting your husband do it or you just keep pulling in, then you have missed an opportunity to practice and learn and therefore get better. Getting better will increase you confidence in your own handling skills and abilities and in turn, also make the overall ride more enjoyable because you are learning to master the bike better a little at a time and at all speeds; not just going straight down the road. Don't give up !!!! Peeaaaccceeee!!!

Good points. Thanks for posting. I park near the entrance of a spot for the same reasons you mentioned, but also because the rear third of most parking spots are covered with oil or other fluids from years of cars being parked there. By keeping my bike near the entrance I prevent any of my tires from resting in oil (or other fluids) which could be a hazard once I start riding again. I try to keep in the middle of a spot so if there are vehicles (especially big trucks and SUVs) parked on either side, an opened door won't hit my bike. If a parked bike looks to be a problem to another driver they may even attempt to move it, which could result in it being dropped, or an injury on their part. I try not to tempt fate (or stupid behavior).
@BootsandJeansRiders
@BootsandJeansRiders 3 жыл бұрын
Excellent points as well....Years of oil build up is bad for the tires, also if you put your foot down in it without looking, down goes the bike. I couldn't have said it any better "If a parked bike looks to be a problem to another driver they may even attempt to move it, which could result in it being dropped, or an injury on their part.
