At 42 years old I’m just getting back on the board and haven’t skated since I was 16. Finally just started landing kick flips again yesterday and dammit feels good!! What’s funny is that my brain still thinks that I can Alley over garbage cans but my body reminds me that that shit ain’t happening😂 Yet..

Thanks for saying that kick flips are hard to learn, Johnny. It helps keep skaters from getting discouraged about them. I started learning kick flips four years ago and they are just starting to look good, but are an ongoing project.

Jonathan Parlane I’ve been skating for 15 years and I still have problems with kick flips. Heel flips on the other hand came to me easy. And another thing to mention is that a lot of people including myself find it easier to do kick flips fakie.

I've been skating since I was a young kid - I got my first board sometime around 1993-1995. I skated all through middle school and high school and never got good, but enjoyed it all the same. Now that I'm in my mid 30s, I still find time to get out and skate - even though I'm twice the age of the kids at the park. My kickflips have always sucked - always just rolling on the ground. I land them, but they look like crap and I've never been able to kickflip over anything save for a gap which goes lower than the starting point. I watched this video and tried the ninja flip action and, on my first try, landed my first beautiful kickflip easily. I just started laughing because it was so easy (again, after ~20+ years of skating). Thanks, Jonny, for teaching this old dog how to do old tricks better. Cheers!

Dude same. I’ve always rocketed my kickflips not thinking of how much worse it looks compared to what they’re supposed to look like. Turned 30 a couple weeks ago and was gifted a brand new complete skateboard (first one in 5 years). Decided to re learn kick flips and this video was a huge help!

Everytime i land a Kickflip, i instant want to do it cleaner. And when i think that the last one was perfect, i check out the footage and see 1000 mistakes. Like fliking to the side and not straight through the nose or jumping to much behind. I watched this tutorial over 10 times over the last two years and getting closer to this beautiful Kickflips every time. Best feeling ever... 😌 (still a super long way, but hey that is what it is all about)

Hi Jonny, I was having real trouble getting my kickflips higher until yesterday. I've watched lots of youtubes on making kickflips better, but none of them mention the problem I was having: basically, I couldn't get much pop and they were really low (because I have been leaning forward on my front foot too much), although they flipped fine. The solution was moving my body weight on my back foot slightly more in the initial stance. The result was a better pop of my tail on the ground, and a higher kickflip that actually sucked up in the air. Minor tweak but it's been the thing stopping me for getting higher. Just thought I'd share this with others who are probably watching your awesome videos!

I just landed my first kickflip today I'm hyped, when I didn't know how to do'em and I only knew the 180's(just barely being able to land bs 180's) pop shove it's Ollie and front shoves and some others.. I felt like I wasn't good or couldn't be considered a skater because I didn't know any flip tricks so that thought in my head made me wanna learn at least some type of flip so bad yet I nvr focused on practicing I've been skating for a year now and I've only put in alot of time on kickflips these past two months and now I've finally got them I feel so ecstatic just to say yeah I can land a kickflip 😆😆😂

Well that is one good looking kickflip. I just bought new skateboard after 16 years of hiatus 😅 (im 32 now) and funny thing is that I could do a kickflip on a first day but I cant do really any other tricks. Now I need to start practicing my ninja moves, that just looks so good. I have been skating 3 times now in first week and my body is saying to me that I need to rest (all those unused skateboarding muscles) but my mind want to go out and skate all the time. Its unbelievable good exercise too! Thanks for your teaching vids, subbed for sure!

Another thing that helped me was changing the way I conceptualize a "kickflip". Gonz invented the kickflip, but he wasn't doing them over anything. His were very MOB style (kicking down), when people started learning to do them over things, for a while, they were being called "ollie kickflips", because you ollie first, then kickflip. If you think about the trick this way it makes all the difference.

Hey dude, I'm still working on my kickflips, but I think what you've said about placing the back-foot on the edge of the board has helped me a lot...another thing it's about waiting more to flick, it was a good tip... now my problem is to maintainmyself on the board right afther the flip, cuz when I step on the board it goes away and I go barckward...
