Scanner Danner I wish you lived close to Las Vegas. I got a 99 Escort ZX2 Automatic that Will not start. I have tried to figure this out for 6 months.When u turn the key the dashboard and headlight do come on But Makes No sound. I have taken the ignition switch away from the Tumbler and turn it with a screwdriver NOTHING. No sound/no clicks. I have replaced the starter twice, Replaced the Neutral Safety Switch 3 times, The ignition switch 3 times. This car does not have a Starter Relay in the fuse box. I have checked all the fuses multiple times. I have had 3 batteries on this thing. Replaced the battery cables and checked them out. I tell my neighbor I don't need a mechanic. I need a technician. I tell him I need ScannerDanner and explained to him who you are. Thanks for the venting. I too old and right now it's too hot in Vegas.

I need to measure waveform for Solenoid Injector Ignition coil What's attenuater sutible for This I found 20:1 in ebay.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 жыл бұрын
The typical low amp probes (20-60 amp range) are capable of measuring 250 amps, or a max output of 2.5 volts. This is why I used the 60 amp setting which produces an output voltage of 10mv per amp. On a 2v scale, this is 200 amps if you do the math. No, you will not hurt the probe and you are only limited by the size of the jaws. They MUST close all the way. Lastly, remember when using amp probes that you are NOT sending amperage into the scope, you are sending a voltage equivalent to the magnetic field strength which is proportional to the current flow. No attenuator is needed for this test.

The new autel scan tool can really shine here... Should be able to do this via the vci and power/ground. The tool already knows how many cylinders are in the engine once the vehicle info is entered. A sync may not be so easy to figure out, but autel is almost there in terms of having you be able to do a relative compression test from the drivers seat, only hooking up to the dlc.
@ScannerDanner

agree, the DLC connected to channel 4 of the scope is super awesome and one can use battery voltage supplied on pin 16 for this test. Just have to remember to invert your pattern when using battery voltage.

hello danner i have a question as a beginner i wish you could explain i have a jeep liberty kj 2003 the car has poor fuel economy like 200km per full tank i didn't mind it since its a high mileage vehicle with a burning oil engine with a faulty o2 sensor after a while th engine had a major problem with the bearing it needs to be rebuilt completely it coast a lot in this country so i bought another liberty which had an accident but mechanicaly in a good condition so i swapped tge engine and transmission and front differential and the gas tank with the pump o2 sensors every thing but the map sensor because it was broken after the car is ready i drove it for a while it still has poor fuel economy its even worse than the old engine the car has no codes so i suspect the map sensor i cleaned it since i couldn't find new one nothing changes after that i noticed in live data that the tps read 13.7 % the old tps was reading 12.2 % so i removed it while it still connected to the wires i noticed the reading drops to 6.8% like the throttle body (it's clean) holding it from full return so i modified the throttle body axle that move the tps until it read 6.8% while it's a full closed throttle plate.... i still have high positive ltft but i do noticed improvements in fuel economy about 150km more than before i hope you explain the situation and if i changed engine oil will my ltft get close to zero? thank you and I'm sorry for the long story

Nice job. Q: You disable the fuel, so what's the different between 1 & 4 in firing? I mean If you synchronizing with number 4 will get the same waveform, so why one high in compression stroke and the other is low in exhaust stroke and you don't have a fuel!!!?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 жыл бұрын
remember that I am connected to the #1 plug wire only and the firing line will ONLY be high when the #1 is on compression. When the #1 is low (on exhaust), the #4 (it's companion cylinder) will be high, but we won't see that because we are not connected to the #4. Hope that makes sense. Also, it is compression pressures, not fuel or lack thereof, that creates this high/low pattern in a waste spark system.

@@ScannerDanner it does make sense. The issue is that I am not getting a signal from any of the four wires while cranking. I tried again with the EFI relay installed and engine running--i got a signal, but it was erratic at best. It must be my scope setup because this is a known good engine (my daily driver--2013 FJ Cruiser). I just subscribed for one month of all data for the wiring diagram. Used 2 channel scope at 5v and again at 2v/div. Disabled fuel pump and cranked at WOT. The trace went up to 2v as a flat line--no peaks. This is being done on a good engine for my own practice. @@scientist100 for port injection, you will have one constant power and one pulsed ground. If you are using a multimeter, it is no fast enough to see the small pulse width signals of an injector and will only show a slightly lower than battery voltage average. Are you use a meter or scope?

@@ScannerDanner scope, does it matter where I probe the wire? Can I connect the negative lead at the battery or is that another lead that I would need? Thank you for your help

@@scientist100 one lead to battery ground, then the other lead to each injector wire individually. Keep in mind that injectors can have over 100 volt spikes when they operate so you'll need to protect your scope depending on the model you have. My pico for example can handle 200 volt surges before needing a step down attenuator and my Snap-on scopes can handle 400 with no attenuator needed

Good to know that when we have a zombie apocalypse combined with a alian invasion I can still find the missing compression in cylinder #2 with just my ear...

Will this work with Diesel engine?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 жыл бұрын
Yes but not with the low amp probe I was using. You'll need a higher amp probe for diesel engines.

@@bluejames79 sounds like you need a pump or filter. Perhaps pumps failing.

@@scientist100 new filter, new pump, had a few injector s o rings that were busted, replaced them,. At this point I don't know.

@@bluejames79 if a diesel fuel system gets air in it it compresses so the fuel cant get through the injectors. if it runs on starting fluid usually it doesnt have major mechanical problem. since it sucks in the starting fluid it is breathing enough. focus on air leaks in the suction side of the transfer pump or a fuel volume management issue- i.e. sollenoid fuel rack etc
