How to Photograph Baseball: Little League, Softball, MLB

Wow finally someone who shoots with some “swag” … I’ve watched so many cornballs taking corny pics unedited and making a KZfaq video about it … boggles my mind that they call themselves “professionals”

I know its late, but even though I've been doing high school sports for about 5 years (including baseball) I have only been concentrating on the batters swing or the pitcher's delivery. Can't wait to try the before and after part of the action. Thank you so much for your knowledge. Of course you need to lose the NY hat (although I have taken many photos of Mike King in his high school days).

Same here, I don't have the experience like yourself but taking pictures of my boys baseball games I've always just taken the action shots. Glad I stumbled upon this video.

Any tips for shooting behind the fence/net? I find I miss more shots due to the focusing issues when trying to follow the action on the field and the camera fights to focus on the net/fence in the foreground.

Kate, When I have to shoot thru the fence, I switch to manual focus. I also have the lenshood actually touching the fence. With the front element that close to the fence, the fence usually can't be seen in the photo. I use this technique to photograph pitchers and plays at home plate.

Hi, I was wondering why you say only shoot at 1/250th or 1/400th and not 800th/100th/1250th? Nice video!!

Sure, it’s really a minimum of 1/250th or 1/400th :) By all means you can shoot faster (you’ll probably be forced to shoot faster because of the sun.) :) I’ll go back and watch the video again, I hope I said minimum, otherwise it’s a great catch. Thanks and happy shooting!

@@gomarky I will need to watch it again, maybe you said that and I missed it...lol I was just curious on why you would shoot that low for SS for trying to freeze action without motion blur (unless you are going for that look or have a slower lens?)

@@markloken2465 The minimum of 1/250 (ideally 1/400th) is going to cut down on motion blur. Now, there are creative opportunities with motion blur (for example, a swinging bat or a ball in flight) but staying above the minimum shutter speed helps keep the athlete easily recognizable.

I use 1/1600... I shoot with 70-180 and 100-400 mm lenses

shutter should 1/1000 maybe you could get away with 1/800 but 1/1000 for sure

Sorry In advance but I think some stuff needs to be cleared up, minimum shutter speed in 1 1000th and it’s best to be at 1 1500th or 1 2000th for sports because you want to freeze the action. Also, always shoot in raw even for sports because sports happen so fast you may not have time to change your exposure or you will accidentally forget to re expose your shot and if you shot in jpeg you’ve got an unhappy client 😂
