In today's video I'm in Norfolk concentrating on some slow shutter speed photography with some beautiful short-eared owls. I talk about what I'm looking for in the scene & what settings I used to achieve these stylistic photos. I also start that video with a few thoughts on the sharing of locations and would love to hear your thoughts on this topic.

Marc I am so glad I found your channel. Your videos and images are fantastic, beautiful, and informative. I have been doing a lot of soul searching lately about exactly what you are talking about. I am losing my passion for birds because of the number of people who have taken up the hobby of bird photography of late. The majority of these people have come to learn about the keen interest in birds since the pandemic and many of them are photographing and sharing photos of birds just for the likes and comments. Many of them don’t know or care about ethics in birding and will do anything to get the shot. On one hand I am happy that birds are getting the exposure they need but on the other hand the increased pressure on birds, especially sensitive species, is very concerning. I will be bing watching all of your videos. Thanks for sharing!

That is incredibly kind of you to say Lisa! Thank you so much ☺ Unfortunately, it's hard to come up with a solid answer isn't it. I think education has to be included, but some people just aren't willing to listen... who knows. Thanks again, Marc

Interesting points raised about sharing locations, personally will only share locations with trusted friends but also happy to share a location publicly if on a reserve such as Slimbridge or Hamwall. Great vid BTW👍

Thanks Alex 😊I wonder who gave me the idea to discuss location sharing ay 😅 I think I'm with you on that, very much depends on location & specific species doesn't it - as with most things, it's never black & white!

Sharing locations, I think you have to be careful depending on the bird animal your photographing the time of year is it breeding and how scarce is it to be seen in your area... I tend to be general about what I've seen and not pacific. Like "where was that taken. O-near Suffolk I think. 😅 lol. Love your videos I'm new to your site and trying to catch up.

Nice one mate! Good points on location sharing, definitely something I’m conscious of and tend not to share them myself but have been very grateful to hear of locations from others myself, if I go and there are too many people then I’ll tend to turn back around though! Great to see some different SEO shots on this

Top man, thanks Olly 😊I think location sharing is probably more of an issue around densely populated areas. I've been to a few SEO spots in Norfolk over the last couple of weeks, which I think are fairly well known spots, and there were never more than 10 photographers/birders around - even in perfect conditions!

Great video. I really like how you give tips on making photos different to the ‘norm’. There is always something new to try out - very inspirational! Interesting points made about sharing locations. Yeah, the owl location near Bristol was heaving with photographers 😅

Thanks Lisa 😀it was heaving wasn't it! I don't really know what the answer is - I wouldn't ever want to stop somebody from seeing a species as beautiful as the short-eared owl. I guess it's up to the individual to decide whether the "shot" really is worth it.

Nice video. What settings did you use for video of the Owls in flight ? Did you have the camera and lens on a tripod for the video ?

Thanks Roger 😊 4k 60fps in OMlog400 h265, then added the LUT and colour graded 👍 all OM-1, 300mm f4, hand held and then a bit of stabilisation in post. I've found the 300mm works incredibly well for handheld video

Wonderful shots. I love short-eared owls, especially as I've only seen them twice so far, both times in Orkney. (Here in south Germany they are rarely to be seen.) Regarding sharing locations I'm exactly as ambivalent between being thankful for others having done so many times on one side, and sometimes seeing far too many people getting attracted on the other, for example at "my" small local pond when people with number plates from hours away are showing up in the dozens because someone had reported a spotted crake. At least for the most protected species like hoopoo or eagle owl the german birdwatching portal "ornitho" would hide reports from public so you know that reporting them would attract only real ornithologists at most. But overall a difficult topic for which I don't have a clear answer either.

Thank you Christian 😊oh lovely, I'm hoping to visit the Orkney's for the first time next summer, did you find it good for wildlife photography? Ah that's a good idea from "ornitho". It's a tough one isn't it, there's never a definitive answer to things like this! You just have to hope that people can be trusted to act with the welfare of the wildlife in mind.

@@marchumphreyphotography Yes, Orkney is a wonderful place to watch and photograph wildlife. There's curlews everywhere, other waders, a colony of little terns, short-eared owls and hen harriers, red-throated and great northern divers, otters, both species of seal, with a bit of luck also dolphins or even orca, and of course all the typical sea birds such as gannets, guillemots, kittiwakes, razorbills, skuas and some puffins. Across the islands there are multiple excellent bird hides and RSPB reserves; Noup Head on Westray is especially impressive. Looking forward to watching some vlogs on this channel next year!
