Hi Dan Really helpful video. Just bought the Z9 and really looking forward to trying some wildlife (mainly landscape currently but inspired to get into wildlife by Paul Fowlie’s squirrel hides in Hawes). Been reading up lots on the focus modes (bought Steve Perry’s book) but your video confirms that I am not a million miles off with what I have set up. Just need some spare time to get shooting now (excited). Once again thanks for your help! Clive

Thanks for your comment it’s really appreciated. You can customise each of the buttons from the menu. If you search Hudson Henry on KZfaq he has an in-depth setup guide for the Z9, I used that as my foundation and then tweaked to my liking. Hope that helps 👍🏻

Hi Dan enjoyed your video must check out Leeds Hides, thanks for the info. Have you tried setting either c1 or c2 focus modes to 1x1 which is the same size as the one you have on your function button 1. The difference is with the 1x1 mode you also get subject tracking.Just a thought, keep the videos coming.

Great video, Dan, as always. When you and Pops both spoke about settings you both mentioned how you switch between FX and DX mode. I do the same with my Z9 (and my Z7ii, come to that), but I often question myself as to really which is better - 1) use DX mode for the extra reach but accept the lower resolution; 2) use FX and crop in in post taking advantage of the full frame resolution of the camera's sensor. In truth, I still haven't come to any conclusion. I wonder if anyone has a carried out a detailed scientific study of the two modes and the results to prove which is better!!
@danwillis_photography
@danwillis_photography Жыл бұрын
Thanks Brian, it’s funny that you pose this question as it is one Pops and me discuss almost every time we go out. I am going to do a video on it as I think it’s an interesting topic. My thoughts and reasoning for doing it before testing are around the autofocus system. I think that the 3D tracking is more effective when the target is larger in the frame and by switching to DX the camera will often acquire a subject when it is struggling in FX. Thanks again for your ongoing support 👍🏻

Nice one Dan - you got some lovely images there! I've just recently sorted out a sparrowhawk hide day for next February and watching this has got me well stoked for that!! Question: did you end up using the longer lenses at all of did you just stick to the 70-200mm and TCs? I'm going to a different hide but it'll probably be similar distances...
@danwillis_photography
@danwillis_photography Жыл бұрын
Thanks Geoff really appreciate it. We stuck to the 70-200 and TC’s, to be honest I’d say 300mm would have optimal for the range, subject size etc Best of luck with it mate 👍🏻
@GeoffCooper
@GeoffCooper Жыл бұрын
@@danwillis_photography cool - I’ll take the 70-200, TCs and the 400 f/4.5 and probably once again wish I still had the 300mm f/2.8 - seems like that really was the ideal ‘hide lens’…!

Hi Dan, I’ve just discovered your channel and am very impressed with your photos. I love the fact that your Dad accompanied you. I hope we see more of him in your other videos. I have the much slower to focus original Z 7 and am thinking of buying a telephoto zoom for bird photography. The Starling photo at 14:08 is superb and I see you used the 2x teleconverter for this. Apart from the magnification differences which do you think produces the better photo quality, the DX mode or the 2x teleconverter? Many thanks. Subbed.
@danwillis_photography
@danwillis_photography Жыл бұрын
Thanks Christian I really appreciate your comment. Personally I love switching to DX mode for the extra reach and rarely do I ever think the image quality suffers for doing so (that said I don’t print many images greater than A3 in size for competition. The 2x teleconverter in quality light is superb, when you start to push ISO above 1600 the image does appear a little softer when you pixel peep. I would like to purchase the 1.4 and test that as I think it would be the perfect balance 👍🏻
@christianpetersen1782
@christianpetersen1782 Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Dan. That’s very good to know as I’ve never used a teleconverter but had seen comments that the DSLR 2x teleconverter wasn’t as good optically as the 1.4x. I’m pleased to hear the Z 2x is good to use.

What would be the best iso rang for z9
@danwillis_photography
@danwillis_photography Жыл бұрын
Not a straightforward answer to this one as ISO in modern DSLR’s and mirrorless cameras don’t have a straight correlation between ISO and image quality. If you check out the website link below 👇🏻 and put in the Z9 it will give you comprehensive information about this. www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm
