How to pick Gooseberries without the pain.

Picking Gooseberries can be a tricky painful business. The thorns are sharp and strategically placed along the branch just waiting for careless fingers. I have just picked 3 lb of Gooseberry's in under 5 minutes and never got pricked once! Harvesting Gooseberries

That is a pure genius way of collecting gooseberries. I have a Worcesterberry (a blackcurrant/gooseberry cross) its a very thorny sister to a jostaberry but less disease prone. Their thorns make the ones on a gooseberry look pathetic! My kids nicknamed it the swear bush cos that's what you did when trying to harvest these lovely berries. Now I know how to harvest them next year - thanks.

I was the only one that always picked our gooseberries so it was always me that got pricked, like you and yours, no one else in our family would have a go. Then one day I put some heavy gloves on and it was a eureka moment. Just drawing a loosely closed, gloved hand, along the branch, rather than picking the gooseberries, I was stripping the gooseberries at a great rate of knots and the thorns didn't get me. This is how my grandparents taught me when I was a kid except no gloves. If you Grip it just hard enough you will not get poked. And make sure you are always sliding towards the end of the branch. We also tend to like them a bit greener than in this video cause there is nothing better than a tart gooseberry pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

It would be a 'big leap of faith' for me to grasp a gooseberry branch without a heavy duty glove on. These are desert gooseberry and sweet to eat straight from the bush. HGV

No doubt. What I’ve learned is that you just go for it. Enough pressure that it brings a few leaves with it. Thorns point in that direction so a more firm grip does the trick. Sounds yummy!

The only drawback I see is that you might get unripe gooseberries, but, that can be minimized if most of the berries are ripe. Useful trick.

Ay-up lad, tha's worked owt a gradely method fert gatherin of goosegogs. I've two bushes laden wi fruit this year, and al use yer recommendation. Thanks from Lanky lad.
